HM the palms are actually not facing up. They are down. Imagine grabbing a barbell to do a military press and then taking it over your head onto your shoulders in back (hence VB’s comment.)

I can’t do it on the beach, you need to be moving through a turn but you table top the wing and don’t stop. The strut goes over your head and you push the strut over and back with your back hand as you let go. Sort of like shrugging it over. Release the back hand and your front hand is now behind your shoulder like you’re reared back to throw a ball. But instead of throwing it overhand, you side arm it around which makes your palm now face up. Your other hand comes the other way, meets it and becomes the front hand.

As was said, that hand that’s releasing the front handle now has to cook back before that strut flies away. I don’t know if I can do this but it seems so much more controlled than leaving the wing sort of flapping around which is what I do.

VB are you able to do this at a normal speed or are you cranking the turns like JH?

I’m about to go watch Alan C’s video on it and I’ll post a recap.
So that back hand, a la barbell, does a behind the neck pass, like Magic Johnson does in basketball?

"Enter the jibe, raise both hands over your head to the back as you cross 90° back hand let’s go and pushes the strut back over your shoulder. "

Surfcowboy, So is this a 'push' since this back hand has had a grip that faces you?  The push being like a behind the back (of the neck in this case) pass in basketball?   These two pics are that moment, right?

Foil SUP / Downwind pic from Maliko

This is my friend Jeremy on a downwind run from Maliko on Maui's north shore.  He was innovative and stuck his paddle (with cam at the other end) in the board's carry strap to support his paddle.  Taking us 'with him' with a very close up shot.

You looked like you were trying to give birth in the picture finding the center of mass. I've been trying to do SUP downwind foiling in the Columbia for three years. I made most of the effort in the first year, but I still go out and piss myself off every so often. I still have never made it more than 30 feet.

I have one important tip for you--don't do it where other people can see you. Even when I do it in places that most people ignore sooner or later someone shows up to coach me. They think I should be grateful for their help, while I'm wishing they would have an aneurism.

OK, paddle on. The only thing I'd add is that Shantelle can do it. Maybe she'd coach you. That might be OK.
Have you ever tried holding the foil upside down at the thickest part of the foil?  Anyway I have seen a woman in Bali giving birth standing up.  It was something but it didn't look like me.

But recently I've been inspired by my pal Jeremy Riggs to learn how to pop up from the flats on a foil.  And even failing to lift off, at least I'll be able to augment my wave catching ability on a foil board.  Jeremy, 60 pounds less than me and 20 years younger is quite proficient at lifting off from the flat, usually in three strokes.  I posted a video (Jeremy Riggs flat water pop up).
Yes, it's always great to have an inspiration to keep us chasing the brass ring...but as you understand, we sometimes have to be realistic in what our dang bodies will actually allow what our oftentimes overzealous brains will let us do.  :o >:( ;D

I also did the check out on my foil board for center of mass for board and foil, which had my mast position 1" forward of where I have been riding it when winging.  The 1" back position had the board slightly tipping nose down.
I think that for surf foiling vs flat start foiling...that you'll want/need your mast a little further forward still. With the HA wings in the surf, we need speed to get them in the air, which usually means a late takeoff to get going down the face to actuate it, and then just letting the board/wing to come up on its own. This instead of trying to "Ollie" it up that the lower AS wings allow, and are able to be set back a little further in the boxes as a result of that.

Flat water starts it appears (since I've not actually done it yet) that there does need to be a little "Ollie" up to get the wing pointed up slightly to get it start to climb slightly with each paddle stroke forward. I'll have to review Jeremy's video again to see if my "WAG" is somewhere close to correct. 🤷‍♂️😀
Yes I hear you and today I went on my short board I've only 'winged' on.  I did it but it wasn't easy.  Put in an hour and was pretty worked after.  But I paddled with a spread stance.  One thing I noticed by moving the mast forward, was that each stroke turned the board more significantly than before.

Foil SUP / Wake up call

More like the sudden realization that winter waves are just around the corner and it had been over a year since I paddled... anything.  Since then winging and the other vagrancies of life, like; work, covid and any number of excuses have distracted me from even touching a paddle.

So I decided not to be too ambitious and went down to the beach I live near for just some flat water paddling to reacquaint.  Water was churned up and a little rough but the time for excuses was over.  Used my old SUP board (no foil) with a three years worth of dirt on the bottom.  Did about two hundred yards with Shirley on the beach taking a few pics so I could see what was happening.  Yes I know... top arm bent, hips not turned.  It was pathetic, I'm tired but I didn't fall and I have a starting point.   This will be my new 'breakfast'.  Tomorrow I'll start with the foil board.

I also did the check out on my foil board for center of mass for board and foil, which had my mast position 1" forward of where I have been riding it when winging.  The 1" back position had the board slightly tipping nose down.

Re: big paddles. They aren’t really paddling much in a downwind run so less worrying about shoulders.
Wow.  i would think the opposite.  Sudden sprints from 'off-the-line' (to get lifted) are where I would think one is most vulnerable to blowing a gasket.    It's the burst that kills the bursa.

Are the handles still flat and sharp or more round?

flattish, but very rounded. Sharp is gone. A little more space. No knuckle dragging.

I like the bags. I must be a better kite folder….haha.

Windows are very thin and light. The thinnest I’ve seen used in a wing.
Great videos DW.  The ART foil appears rock steady.  I have my name on one in the next shipment.  It was amazing to see how well you got up in that light wind with the smaller wing.

Tomoko was on a Maliko 280.

I found that the Maliko 280 would take off on almost NOTHING this summer in Connecticut and Rhode Island.  I would be out foiling with NO ONE at great breaks because it was "Too small to surf."

I probably weigh +60 lbs. more than her but this is what I was able to get up on.  Essentially a boat wake.  These videos make me wonder IF the flat water would have less turbulence but therefore require a touch more technique.

@JonDrums - I don't think you have tried a truly enormous wing.  The M280 has much more lift than the M200.

So these monster sized foils might not be ideal once you're up but learning the move on them is constructive so that you've got the jump on it when you get a open ocean swell or a breaking wave to help.  This video is with your 280?  Looks like you're getting close.

70
In the pyramid of learning how to lift on a foil, winging is probably the easiest, catching a breaking wave with a paddle-- a bit more difficult, catching an open ocean swell with a paddle-- really challenging, and finally popping up on flat water with a paddle is a considerable task, which once conquered, enables all the lower challenges.  In this video Jeremy Riggs breaks it down.  After coaching one of the  females, who had experience in all the lower categories, she popped up on the flats.  The whole beach erupted in cheers.

I have the double secret spot... inside my gas cap.  No one would ever think that was a spot, right?

72
I made my own version of that  with a nylon 2cm thick cutting board.
Pretty much the same shape, works perfectly well,no dings when getting on board and you can paddle prone in a hurry without moving it aside. It just folds flat.
Perfect for the wing.
Will you post a picture?  Thanks

73
Yeah, I think beyond the plastic it’s that it will fold over due to the lack of a wide base.

These are exactly what I was dreaming of. 3D printed vs CNC is interesting. Someone test this.
Yep.  I think you're right but placing let's say three of them together or fashioning a wider base ???

Got my 2nd Moderna on the first.  Yes a few hrs of chills and aches/fever 100.  Then it broke and I was fine.  Below is my take on whether or not to get a vaccines.

I remember one is those 1950s WWII movies.  An Italian/American guy pulls his hair through his slicked back hair by his locker on a ship about to send soldiers ashore for an amphibious landing.  A nervous shipmate asks him, “Hey, Angelo, you nervous?   You think we’re gonna make it?” And Angelo brushes it off, “They can’t kill me, I’m from New Jersey.”  That guy’s line, brimming with such a huge reservoir of confidence, always stuck with me.  Of course in the movie, just like reality, he ‘got it’ first.  And I’m all for confidence but when it comes to whether or not to vaccinate yourself some of you might be thinking, man, I don’t want to put that crap in my body.  I’m going to make myself strong and jack my immunity up, because I’m from ’New Jersey’ (or wherever) where they made us tough.  I admire that kind of bravado but for me, I know I haven’t been a monk during my life.  My lungs especially.  I’ve probably smoked more than Cheech and Chong.  I eat sugar.  Active but still, slightly overweight.  Genetically, I know I’m no ‘wunderkind’.  I allowed all those vaccines to be shot in me during my youth, like polio, which took Salk two and a half years to develop.  Hilleman was credited with creating the first measles and mumps vaccine in two years.  So is this one ‘rushed’ having been developed in a year?  It’s been 50-60 years since those vaccines were made.  I think it’s reasonable that the developmental process has been cut in half during the last half century.  What about down the line?  I hear that and again, we didn’t know what would happen with those vaccines we took as kids.  I know I have a hefty scar from my smallpox, so my modeling career is down the tubes.  But I know the amount of people who will change their minds is zero from anything I write here but the anti-vax thing is insanity.

Windfoiling, Windsurf Foiling / Anyone seen this harness hook before?
« on: April 08, 2021, 09:17:44 AM »
I saw this on FB and it looked like a 'kinder' hook than any of the other metal hooks I've seen.  He says it's light weight but doesn't mention the material.   I like the shape and rounded edges.  But as Letterman always said, will it gouge?
