Training, Diet, and Fitness / Re: Fatness for the Holidays...
« on: December 31, 2010, 04:20:30 PM »
SoCal, I know you meant in jest but I've been to Nepal and those starving kids don't need our addictions.  Even starving, they can out climb all of us.  Which brings me to a good point.  The holidaz are so dangerous because we all run into friends and family who are so intent on feeding us like prize hogs at the county fair.  "You look so skinny" they say when you know you're 10-20 pounds over.  They have no criteria about the activity we do.  They don't know how much penalty we incur with 10-20 over ideal.  And if you got 30+, you're carrying the weight of an extra board downwind with you.  How's that??? Why do they do it? Maybe to justify their own eating habits by having you join them.  It's all well intentioned but you know in your heart that it's slowing you down.

Driving across the SW desert a boy sees a buzzard eating a carcass and asks his Dad why?  The Dad responds that the animal was the slow one and the slow ones get picked off.  The boy then asks, "How fast is fast enough?"  And that's your question isn't it?  How fast do you need to go?  If you're out on the lone prairie with the wolves and buzzards (an assumption if you are on this particular site), then fast enough ain't in the back of the herd.    Happy New Year and drive safe,  Bill

I'm 60 and 6 feet.  Up till age 33 I was a vegetarian, at 160lbs (same weight I was when I grad high school) and surfed often.  At 45 I could eat all I wanted and still remain at 170.  Quart of Haagan Daz in one sitting blended with mangoes, no problemo.  But then it started.  At age 50, 180 still felt fine but then I really started slipping and by '07 I was 220.  Stacked on 30 lbs in 7 years!  On Labor day of that year I had an A-fib paddling down the coast.  No reservoir of confidence any more.  I knew I had to change.  Don't know if I'll ever hurl myself over the ledge with the abandon I had, up to even 10 years ago but I see some great role model pals of my who are very active in their 70's and now I want those years to be good for me also.  188 this morning... but you know the morning weigh-in is a cheat.  The real one is the end of the day.

SL- Just throw those things out.  It'll be liberating.  You know how when you go to a restaurant and the food is bad and you know it.  You don't eat it because you know you'll pay twice if you do and the price you pay with your body costs so much more.

Looks like da supa bowl of paddling to me.  Wow.    Some of the windiest days can be in March.  Hey don't count out our local guys just yet.  I think there's a dream team out there ... maybe already jelling.

SL... I'm in for the 180 goal.  I'm at 191 right now.  Down from 193 this morning before PB and I hit the beach for some sweating.  No surf today but tomorrow is a maybe.  No more eating after 6pm.
Stoneaxe... You know the riddle... I usta be a damn greek god and now I'm a GDGk.  Ummm... maybe that's not PC.  Hope I don't offend any of our cultural and political Adriatic ancestors and if it does feel free to open up on me with the fact that I have some French blood in me.

It was you Larry.  You were chasing it.  I knew this French wndsrfr who got speared through the leg by one of those dang stick fishes.  Huge infection in his leg for over a year.  So you lucked out.  Great footage.  Wow

I saw that on the news and I also saw the run off from Kala point that is sourced at the dump.  Big brown stain spearing out into aqua blue.  I was in the blue but had my eye peeled for that brown stuff only about 100 yds away.  The attack confirms my thought that if it's brown turn it down... for so many reasons.

JD-We had a Florida type thunderstorm in the middle of X-mas night with real bolts of lightening, not the sheet kind we usually get.  Weather guys said cloud tops were at 40k.  You get cu nims like that in Florida every afternoon but here it's like once a year...  very wild and intense.  Our cats were freaked.  Then the sun came up and it was a bluebird and perfect surf.  We get wild fluctuations here in Hawaii this time of year.  Today looks funky and potential monsoon again.

Happy New year and cheers Bill

I should have called you back after I talked to you because from 9 to noon there were three of us out on prones and that little kid that usta have the mohawk on a SUP.  He was ripping and all of us were doing circles with perfect offshores.  That brown stream never drifted down on us from the Kala point run off.  How about those lightening strikes last night around 1 AM?  Had a virtual deluge last night and then this morning and rest of the day was simply off the charts.  Glad you got back out.  This December has been epic.

The best video I've seen was filmed from a ski or boat following Bart van der Zwart and Connor Baxter - not sure if he had some kind of steady-cam contraption as filming in that chop is normally too shaky.

Ummm... that was a head mount and I kept my head very still.

Please sir.. could we have some more..  :)

DJ
DJ you know I should have quantified the claim about Maui being the best downwinding in the world with ... best warm water  downwinding.  Your Melbourne run looks insane and every bit as good if not better (certainly longer).  But we don't have to wear wetsuits... even in December.  X-mas here today and insane surf.
