The reason I say you get LESS lift is that you've just increased the DOWN-FORCE on the back of the wing, which is the opposite of more lift.  The net total lift of the system has gone down.  That's why you feel more drag when you do this.

But you also get more stability because the lifting center is further forward of the center of effort.  Sorry for the semantics, but to me it matters.
Your first part confirmed what I thought when I read Hdip's post.  But this second part I'm not familiar with; lifting center and center of effort.  Please elaborate.  Thanks.

Since I believe you have a 3D printer, the links are for the downloadable files so you can make some shims, and know exact degrees you're putting in or taking out with those shims.

Edit: Also, from the pics of your tail with the green shim you made, it has lifted the leading edge of the tail, and you now have a gap there between the tail and the fuse, and I think you'll get even more whistle from that than you would from the tiny original trailing gap you showed.
You mean this part right up at the front fuse/leading edge connection?  (pic) I don't have a 3-D printer so it is guess work.  I can make a cleaner shim up at that top little gap at the tip of the leading edge and close that gap.  In iPhoto I took some grid pic to try to compare the angle changes. That pic is with a double shim in front half.

If you lift the rear edge of the stabilizer you get more lift.
You get more lift in the front foil, not the stabilizer.  The rear stabilizers are set to provide some downward force on the rear end of the fuselage which causes the front wing to gain more upwards angle of attack and lift.   The downward stabilzer angle comes at the expense of increased drag. The Axis minus 1 shim reduces the downward angle of the rear stabilize, reducing drag.  It's a matter of degrees and between minus 1 to -.5 is probably optimum.  My challenge is to find out how much I've changed the angle (up in this case).

Sailboat Foiling / Re: Foiling Sailboats!

There used to be this thing quite a few years ago, before foiling as we know arrived, called the trifoiler.  Laird and some others were toying around with it off Kuau and this older guy, older than Pono, got convinced to try it.  So with totally inadequate training, he jumps into the thing and begins going bat outta hell fast.  Finally crashed into the rocks.  Trashed the boat and banged himself up pretty bad.  The guy was a big deal, owner of all the Bally Health clubs you see in many hotels, lives in Malibu, the works.  "Yeah, piece of cake.  Anyone can do it."

A clearer shot of the single shim throughout.  After I thought about it I think it does lift the leading edge more than the no shim pic.

Did we decide what the perfect tail for the 999 is?
I'm running the KDMaui 13.5" at about 3.5deg up and I've been happy.  Hard to say if there might be a better setup

So when you say 3.5 degree up, do you mean you're lifting the leading edge of the rear wing up 3.5 degrees?

Here's my 400 with the turned up tips (not the HA400).  It seats perfectly like the Incan stones at Machu Picchu.

I don't know about you but I get confused when people use terms like positive and negative angles.  I relate more to; lift the leading edge or lift the trailing edge.

Here's how the 400 rear wing seats into the black fuse with no shim.  As you can see, even with the screws tightened down there a gap toward the rear, which seems to whistle, which bugs me as I go where I don't want to be drawing attention.

Soo... to lift the leading or trailing edge , that is the question... with a 999 and short fuse.

Second shot is with a single layer of plastic I harvested off a big empty green container for kitty litter, this eliminated the gap toward the rear back half of the fuse/rear wing connection and eliminated the noise.  Hard to tell if this lifted the leading edge or not.  It appeared like it just created a better seat and with the shim being equal throughout the length of the attachment , would the leading edge be the same as no shim?

Third shot is with a double layer toward the front half (still single in the rear) which I think is lifting the leading edge of the stabilizer up a tad.

I didn't do a rear shim yet.  But it's pretty easy once you have a generous out of the shim.  Any excees you can trim by drawing a razor blade along the side with the top and bottom being a guide.

I've been winging with the 999 recently and have some questions.   I've had some great runs but also that bucking bronco deal.  I had moved my mast forward from the 2.5 inch mark to the 3.5 mark.  Why, because when I lifted it upside down on land from that point just back from the leading edge of the front foil, 3.5 was where it balanced out.  But that was an extreme bronco ride.  SO I return mast back to 2.5 mark, which is where it was rock steady previously with the 1010.  Better with some good runs but still some bucking.  What's causing that??

I also tried placing wing and board leash on my new harness but went back to putting board leash on ankle. But it was nice having wing leash on harness.

Exactly! The casual toss. That front hand swing around is sweet too...

Speaking about a toss, here is Johny. Apparently it works on a tack on a nuking day as well.
Pretty simple. Better avoid if you have a history of shoulder dislocation. Don't ask me how I know.

My god.  That's da best Johnny video yet.  Incredible how he's having a field day on the river.  Total control.  Than you for that.

Clicked on that site.  First thing I thought of was the slave rowers scene in 'Ben Hur'.  "Ramming speed!"

My tip is to ‘check under the wing’ after powering into a gybe (to reduce apparent wind).
Would you elaborate this part a little more.  Thanks.

In the classic SciFi book, "A Mote In God's Eye" Jerry Pournelle writes about a character trait called (as I recall) the Crazy Eddie. He's the kind of person that in the middle of a trash removal problem where garbage is choking a city and causing health problems calls for a trash hauler's strike. No, I'm not writing about the governor of Texas, this is about a wingfoiler in Maui.

There's been a growing problem with wingfoilers in the harbor and increasing pressure from the Canoe Clubs, fishermen, and commercial users of the harbor to ban wingfoilers using the harbor. The number of wingfoilers in the harbor has grown shockingly, especially given that it's really a lousy place to wingfoil once you get past doing the walk of shame every time you hit the water.

In the middle of this brewing storm, a tourist wingfoiler did this (from a Facebook post):

There was an incident at Kahului Harbor, Maui today with a wing foiler who said he was from Hood River.  The wing foiler disobeyed the orders from a tugboat in the shipping channel and foiled around barges and between two tugs.  He refused to give way.  We spoke with this person and he was not apologetic or had ownership of doing anything wrong.   This was a total lack of respect and knowledge of the local environment and issues.  Some of you may be aware that the Maui Wing Foiling community is on VERY shaky ground with the canoe clubs and the Kahului Harbormaster at the moment.
Please pass this information along to anyone thinking of coming to Maui.   We want you to enjoy world-class wind and waves but we also want you to obey the rules of the road so that we can keep enjoying wing foiling here.   And if anyone knows of a person who happens to currently be in Maui riding about a 5'0 Starboard with a blue F-One Strike wing - we would be grateful if you would let him know that he messed up.   Any help in identifying this person is appreciated too.

I could care less who this clown is, and I certainly hope he's not really from Hood River. I'm reposting this here to say--don't be a Crazy Eddie. I occasionally see some remarkably stupid close passes to the barges in the Columbia, which I mentally dismiss as a stupid tourist move but that's probably not true. I've never understood why anyone would do such a thing. A tugboat captain maneuvering a massive barge certainly shouldn't have to pay attention to someone on a water sports craft of any flavor. And no matter what idiotic sea lawyer nonsense someone might claim, they absolutely have the right of way, both in maritime law and by the laws of physics. If you wind up in their path they cannot and will not maneuver to avoid you. Far more important, it's a completely irresponsible thing to do and it can result in regulation or outright banning of this sport, as it almost did with windsurfing back when hordes of beginners choked Hood River. Don't do it here, and for damn sure, don't do it on Maui, though I certainly expect that won't be an issue for long. This Crazy Eddie has almost certainly nailed shut the harbor for anyone with a wing.

edit--I thought I was wrong about the name and changed it to Crazy Charlie. But I looked it up and found I was right in the first place--unusual. Maybe I'm not completely senile.
Sooo... it gets worse.  Another foiler went out to get him to come in and a fight ensued, while... Akaku TV was videoing the whole debacle.

Surfcowboy, so far I’ve only tried it in lighter 15-20mph conditions. The key for me is powering up into the gybe and if I feel the power drop at the end of that rear arm throttle, I’m comfortable going for the look under and throw around. If I feel a gust hitting, I change course and go standard gybe.   The visibility is so much better with this style gybe!
Perfect.  Thank you.

The strut goes over your head and you push the strut over and back with your back hand as you let go. Sort of like shrugging it over.
