Very cool stuff. I'm just getting ready to start shaping my new 9'6 carver type, so this was some timely info. I might be able to incorporate a little deeper concave. Thx!

The State Parks have rules pertaining watercraft which makes use of a paddle. SUP's, Surfskis, Outriggers, Wave skis, kayaks, etc. At Doheny (aka. DoHo) if you fit into the above mentioned, you are required ( as Pono said) to stay south of the Hammer Head. I'm not sure if the 'hammer head' is still there, I think a storm took if out. Maybe there is still a piece of it remaining? Just stay south of the main lifegaurd building and you'll be fine. If you ditch your paddle, feel free to prone surf your board anywhere there (at the 'Bone Yard' area near the jetty). At San Onofre (aka SanO) you have to drive all the way to the end of the surf beach area. The first stretch of beach is called Old Man's. The last section all the way at the end is called 'Dog Patch' and 'Nuc's' (in front of the plant). South of the last lifeguard tower open to all the mentioned paddle powered watercraft. Within the city beaches feel free to mix it up!

It's like Joe Bark meets Don Johnson. Very familiar 'dominant' shape on their Blue Marlin board? I guess, buy a name brand, scan it, re-due the graphics, and boom. I'm sure the boards paddle nice. I'm wondering if there is some re-branding going on here????

It may be another SUP hate crime! But seriously, the you-know-what that stole it is going to try to sell it. He can't be a SUP'r.... I'll keep an eye out as well.

Travel, Trips, Destinations / SUP weekend get-a-way to Big Bear Lake, Ca.
« on: October 12, 2011, 05:01:09 PM »
This past weekend I was working on our cabin in Big Bear. I keep wanting to get my board out on the lake, but it requires a permit and an inspection of your board. The inspection is to make sure you are not bringing a tiny invasive muscle into the lake from another body of water that has been infected by the little creatures. A one day permit is $15. and a seasonal permit is $45. If you just rent a board at 'Captain John's Fawn Harbor' on the north shore, it's $25. for an hour or $40. for two hours. You don't have to even load your board on your car, just bring your waist pfd and some booties.
Early Sunday morning I headed down to 'Captain John's' and rented a 12' Naish Glide, and chose a Quick Blade paddle.  The water is getting cooler, but I was fine without booties. I wore a life jacket (It's required that you wear them on the lake.) that was included. The life jacket actually made for a nice wind break. I've never paddled with one on, but it was fine. The wind was all ready blowing at about 15 mph from the SE. So I paddled about 2.5 miles into the wind till I reached the observatory on the lake. Then downwinded it back towards Fawn Harbor. This was my first time actually downwinding on a Naish Glide. It rode the close period wind swell very nicely. In fact, I think it was the perfect board for those conditions. I pretty much didn't have to paddle, the whole way back. BTW, had the lake to myself. Everyone is pulling their boats out of the water for winter. Here are some pic's. The Traditional French Toast breakfast at North Shore Cafe, in Fawnskin, was the best post paddle grind I've had in a long time.. 8)

You are definitely going to improve your core strength by paddling. That will increase your power and swing speed. I can drive the ball further now that I've been paddling for a number of years. Balance is another thing that you improve on the more you paddle. A balanced swing stance allows for more control over the ball. It's funny how some people (supposed hard core surfers) bag on golfers, like they don't even understand surfing or being in the water. Last fall I was at a golf course in San Clemente, Ca., and Kelly Slater was teeing off in front of me. He's no slouch golfer either. Now that being said, I would rather surf or paddle distance than play golf. Not because I'm 'hardcore' (though my core is harder these days), because I would rather use my limited free time paddling and staying in shape.

Gear Talk / Re: Corran shaping a down-winder / rough water toy for me?
« on: October 06, 2011, 06:06:48 PM »
Tim,
I think someone will have to create a new SUP shape called something like the 'California Down-winder'. You need a little displacement in the hull because we just don't get runners like they do in Hawaii. It's an open water race, but surfable  'tweener'. I like 'Bump Shagger' or ' Dana Pointer' as well. Bueller? Bueller?

What has helped me in the past with racing, was to focus all my frustrations, and pent up anger into to every burst of energy I can muster up. My dad, my girl friend, etc. They all pissed me off!  Man! was I fast... Of Course, that was 30 years ago. Now I'm Hau'oli (happy), and much slower. Next race I will have to find something to be mad about. 'Heath Care"! The NBA lock out! If they don't play, then I will be pissed!!

But seriously, find clean water. I mean, don't get stuck in the pack. The water gets so turbulent from all the boards and paddles, it literally sucks your board down. Your board will wander all over, and you will drop back so fast you won't know what hit you. If you notice how all the good racers start, it's off to the side. You are usually guaranteed clean water. Then work your way back to the direct line. By then the pack has thinned, and you might pick up a train. Good luck....

Events / Re: Pono Bill BOP Finish
« on: September 26, 2011, 10:45:49 PM »
Hey Pono,
Nice meeting you and your wife. Hope you are enjoying the view from Chris's pad. Probably not as good as the one you have on Maui. I'll probably hit SanO Weds and take SoCal's parking spot. Maybe I'll see you down there.
Not one my best surf finishes at the BOP. I had my own wave and my buddy Michael M. who was reffing off to the side, was yelling at me "get further back". The problem with getting to far back on my 18' unlimited was, it puts you behind the fin ( my fin is 3' forward). There are basically no rails that far back either. Now I've done a number of surf finishes, but none like this. The board just drifted all over. I tried to rutter it, but no luck. So about 50 feet from shore I bailed. I wish SoCal would have filmed it. I would have liked to see it. Had a great time anyway.
PT,
I saw the Laird 'PUMA' board first hand. It's huge, and weighed about 50 pounds. It was probably 38 to 40 inches wide, and all carbon (very odd). I thought the new Naish race boards looked cool with new displacement bow. The 404's looked the same though.

It is sad actually. I paddle through those bands of crap all the time, and think "don't fall here-PLEASE!" Most people who live here are unaware of whats floating out there. They say " don't you see sharks?" I say "worse. I see tons of trash, plastic and crap!" I think the sharks are smart enough to steer towards cleaner waters.
