Hey Glider, I think you nailed it. I too "prefer to be by myself" as George Thorogood would put it. Now I'm old, but I've always been that way. Self employed, set my own hours, work by myself. Now if there is beer involved, I don't mind being in a crowd... I was talking to Colin McPhillps the other day about a crossover board he had made just for trolling. He had a 10' gun made that paddles and surfs well. I've been thinking about making one for myself. I know PSH makes a 'Hull Paddler' that is pretty much just that. It's rethinking the all-rounder board, and making it more of a performace surfing board. As you said, the less accessable beaches are perfect for SUP surfing.

Last Saturday morning I was at SanO. Surfline said 2'-3' and sunny. I guess everyone read it, but the 2' to 3' never showed. There must have been 30 or more people out in "fullsuits"! It was sunny 75 ish, and they are all just standing there with no waves. I decided to trunk it, and do a little 'Trolling" down the coast. I paddled about 1.5 miles and found this perfect little shoulder, solid 3'+, with a steep, fast wave. Only one other SUP'r and one prone guy a little up the beach. I must have caught 25 total speeders, at least. The break was fairly long too. As I paddled back towards SanO I passed another SUP'r trolling, and told him about the spot. When I got back to SanO, there was an even bigger crowd of 'fullsuits' standing there sweating with no waves. I told a few people in the line up that there were waves you just have to paddle about a mile and a half to get to the break. Most of them said they had never paddled that far! One guy said he was going to check it out. He was the only other guy trunk'in it too. Turned out to be a great day, super fun session. Anyone else troll for waves?

He's thinking, "If I could just paddle to the beach before this set catches me. Oh SHiiiiiiiiii. Hope my leash holds!"

Onshore, sounds like you are more into the surfing side of SUP. Practice your pivot turn in flat water. Edge your way back till the nose pop up, and your feet are under water. Then move forward and back again till you get comfortable with that balance point. Add a paddle stroke and try to pivot back side and front. Try to do 360's in place. Then practice it in the line-up. It' different with every board. When your in the line-up, stand a little further back on your board, and you'll find it easier to just turn quicker with out even doing a pivot turn. As far a the fin set ups go, for surfing the effects are so different than they are for distance paddling. If I'm surfing, I don't even consider the fin effect for just standing in the line-up. It's about the performance On the wave. TOW. and practice those pivot turns.

Thanks John. Looks like I came in about 30 sec. behind you. It's nice to see an accurate account of timing and speed. I'll have to get a GPS one of these days........ I told Santa, but I forgot?

Well, at least the REAL wood stinger is waterproof. Oh yeah, when the board hits you, it won't hurt as much. They should use that as a selling point.

Notice the selling points, as if the soon to be Kooks would even know what they are: The Deck is IXPE ( Irraditation Cross-Linked PolyEthylene Extruded Froth), the bottom is firm XPE (Closed-Cell Cross-Linked PolyEthylene), and the core is EPS (Expanded PolyStyrene), AND Waterproof! Wow! Sounds good.... What about the board shape, and what type of paddling it's good for. Small waves? NO. Big waves? NO. Nice glide? NO. Looks good on your car? NO. Confirmed kook in the lineup? YES.

So this hot chick paddles up to you and says, "Nice board". Dude! You'll get some looks for sure. It's definitely the first 'chick magnet board' I've seen. What a pain to glass though... Nice job.

My brother got one of these. Someone was paddling it prone with sunscreen on. It rubbed off on the board and I couldn't get any grip when I tried to surf it. It was like try to surf a newly polished surf board with no wax. We tried to grid it off with sand, but it didn't come off. Low traction board for sure. Costco chocolate/ vanilla yogurt swill....$ 1.50... They're still open... see ya......

I like the Ohana, but they are mass produced at 26" wide. They are not setup like an all custom, one off, fit to you company (which Craig Richmond is). The Ohana's double chined bottom is unique, but they don't feel as fast. All the big name racers no longer paddle them. Your a little higher above water line, which takes away from stability. Most of the Ohana's I've paddled were fiberglass. Though they were light (lightly glassed) they flexed quite a bit. I had an older Ohana that I was considering a trade on until I saw it leaking in more than a few spots. It was a team riders at one time, and it had seen better days. The Richmond's I've paddled are all carbon, well made, very light and stiff.

The race was 4.75 miles with no wind to speak of. I did it in 44 min. so my average speed was 6.5 mph. I got dunked twice along the way. 270 SUP's hitting the first turn was pretty crazy.

Richmond's are the fastest. T-Max, Brian S, etc. etc. all paddle Craig's boards. http://richmondpaddleboards.com/index.html Craig is the king and master of the unlimited world. He just understands very long boards, and makes them very light. I just raced a 18'-8" x 24.5" carbon Richmond in the Hanohano last weekend. It's a 5 mile flatwater race, and I shaved 15 minutes off my time from last year. The board is a lot more stable than you would think for a 24.5" wide, and it is knife'y fast. I think it weighs about 25 pounds. I saw a Rogue unlimited, and on closer inspection it looked like a Richmond. Then I saw Craig's little nautilus shell logo by the nose. T-Max's Riviera unlimited is a Richmond. Craig has not updated his site for over 5 years I'm sure, but he is constantly building boards for the best racers. His prices are very reasonable too. I've raced and paddle just about every brand of unlimited on the west coast, and in my opinion Richmond's are the fastest.
