Gear Talk / How wide is too wide for surf?
« on: September 24, 2012, 12:10:51 AM »
Just saw these boards from a Florida paddle company. They look pretty wide to me. Maybe 34+"? It doesn't look like you could go rail to rail to quickly. I've never SUS'd on anything that wide before, I wonder if they perform well? ???

I was looking at the picture trying to figure out who's in a better position.... They are all in for it. The scary part is how close they are. You can just see the tail of the green boat in the wash, right on the ama of the yellow boat. Having over a thousand pounds in your boat will probably keep them moving through. I would hope for their sake....

Technique / Re: Does anyone assume surf stance as the wave approaches?

The pivot turn doesn't have to be a total tail sinker. Depending on which board I use, my turn will vary. If I'm on my 11'6 Nalu, the tail doesn't want to sink. The tail is so thick, that even with my 230# barely gets the nose up. I usually stand about 12" or more back of center and the big board will make more of a short radius turn. My 10'6 Riviera is a lot thinner in the tail, so it's a little easier to sink the tail and pivot turn. With my 9'4, I just step one foot back a little, and it just noses up. Try standing back of center when you are waiting for a wave. Sort of a ready to turn position. Another thing, your board doesn't have to be perpindicular to the wave to catch it. If I see it's going to be a left, I'll take off angled slightly in that position, and Vise versa for a right. As you get better you'll find you can let your board slide into position, even when you take off out of position. Stay with it brother.....

Hey Sup__Giant,
There will be tons of demo boards. Race boards, surf SUP, and kook boards like you've never seen before. Some guy brought what looked like a Sabot sail boat that was flat. It was 4' wide x 10' long, and actually had a fin. The guy had a booth too. A friend of mine took it out and tried to surf it. It was the funnist thing. They tried two people side by side on it surfing. Good times! I'm sure you will be able to find an un-used demo board to race. If you can get a race board, you should do the distance race on Sunday. I've got to find someone to hang with my kids as well. My wife will be working all weekend. I'm looking forward to demo'g a bunch of boards. Timmy will have a booth there this year... Like SL cares?

I've actually placed well this year in a few races, but a 14' board is too short for my liking. Plus I'm 6'7 and 230# so I'm out of contention anyway::)

Everyone should at least do the open race, just to be part of the event...

Hey Sup__Giant,
I have an 11'6' Nalu that does pretty well in the surf class open race. You are welcome to it, if you want. It's a fun race, and then you get the shirt & sandals. I'm just doing the distance race on my unlimited. I'm going to carry the beer, and Pono has the cups ;D

Sorry to see that Pono. The thought of shipping big boards just plain scares me. It's like the worry you have going in for surgery.

SUP General / Re: Looking for someone to help on board repair...
« on: September 19, 2012, 10:37:35 AM »
What you have is a repair that needs a shaper & a glasser. Most repair guys are average to poor glassers, and not shapers. I would take a hand saw and cut the mess off clean. Use a sander to bevel back the glass onto the good part of the board. This will give the glasser/repair guy something to glass to. Do the shaping yourself. Get some scrap EPS ( Building or boating supply places might have small pieces to sell). Re create the nose shape with a hand saw, a rasp, and a sand paper. You can do it, just take your time. If you blow it, get another piece of foam. Use Gorilla glue to attach it. The repair guy should be able to spackle, detail sand it and glass it. Good Luck.

Ps. All the local glassers are slammed right now getting ready for the BOP. Afterwards they will be busy doing repairs because of the BOP carnage that will ensue......

Puna,
Just try paddling around the lineup in a staggered stance. If your regular, left foot forward a little. Stay in that stance and paddle on both sides. This will help you feel more comfortable paddling that way. It feels like your paddling behind your back to have your left foot forward, and paddling on the left side. You will get used to it.

Technique / Re: Which arm created the most paddle power?
« on: September 18, 2012, 09:47:41 PM »
As Cove said, body rotation is the main force. Lower arm straight in tension. Upper arm straight and bracing while pushing down. Sometime I paddle with my upper hand open. Just the pressure against my palm keeps the paddle in place. Yet, if you paddle correctly, the upper arm is actually in a week position with your left hand is in front of your right shoulder and vise-versa. If you think of it as a braced triangle, your two arms and the shaft, your shoulders and torso is where all the force comes from. That's how I see it anyway....

I never paddle into a wave with my feet side by side. Not sure neutral is the right word. I can stand in a neutral position with one foot forward of center and one back. I pivot turn as the wave approaches so I'm already in a surf stance, and I just paddle in that stance either side. If I feel a little early, I'll put my front foot further to the nose to try to catch it. If I'm late, I jump both feet back quick and take the drop from the tail. Keep trying 8)

Some of the SUP manufactures use a concrete clear coat sealer to top their painted finishes. They used it on one of my boards. Don't know the exact product, but it is a concrete sealing product.
