Gear Talk / Re: Adding a strap handle?

http://www.ofishl.com/standup/suphandle.htm  I have one of these on my 11'6 Naish Nalu and it works great. Just sand both surfaces and 5 min. epoxy it  on. Too easy......  Very hard to find it on Ofishl's website. Mark is in the shop making fins, plugs and boxes all the time. I don't think he has even updated his website in years......

The ' troll and carve' board. That looks like a great board for just that.

The Bark / Laird is a good flat water and open ocean paddler, but no good for downwinders. You don't want a piercing bow with a sharp, low rocker dispaced entry if you are truly downwinding. The sharp nose grabs, and it tries to pitch-pull you. You end up standing way back, which makes the board stall.  For downwinding you need something that is more like surfing a gun, like these....
 http://www.paddleboardspecialists.com/Downwind-SUP-Paddleboards/products/79/
They have a flip of rocker in the nose so when you hit the bottom of a trough they don't dig. The standing decks are higher and the rails are sharper for surfing the bump. 'Like a big gun with a flip in the nose.' The downside is they are slower in flat water.

The Shape Shack / Re: Re: my hot wire outline cutter
« on: April 18, 2013, 08:39:56 AM »
I played around with the thicker hotter with a number different materials. I use custom foam shapes on houses I design and build. On one house I built I had about 800 Lin. Ft of 14" eps crown on the eaves of the house. The entire driveway was full of pre-hotwired blocks of foam standing on end. In hind sight I just drewl thinking about about all that foam.
Anyway, the company that cuts all my architectural foam gave me some of their heavy flat wire you can bend in to shapes. 'Rails!' I thought. Running at speed, meaning the gets fed into the hot wire like a table saw, and it does increase production. You slow down even a little and the heat just plumes off the wire. If can find a piece, I'll show you what that looks like. I can tell you that eps gets rock hard when you cook it. Just picture throwing a Styrofoam cup into a fire, you get the idea. Slow with a thin wire ( get the nickel guitar strings) and the min. Voltage is the clean way to go.
The off gas from the hotter wire will make you sick as well. I didn't use my hot wire on the 18' board I just did for that reason.

What do you suggest if I want to make the outline for each side different than the other side instead of just the tail? For example: I want to make the backside outline fuller than the frontside.

Magenta,
Shape3D maintains symmetrical sides. For an asymmetrical board you would design it as a fish, and hand cut your backside tail.

I can do it in AutoCAD, then create a .dxf. As far as I can see the constraints on Shape3D don't allow you to have any asymmetrical shapes. I think having different outlines on either side would not be a good thing for just paddling. Your creating a foil which might make the board what to turn as you try to paddle straight. I would imagine once you're on a rail the foil wouldn't have any effect. Hey, if you got foam to burn???

Jradtke,
The best part is surfing or paddling your own creation. The worst is you can't stop thinking about what you want to do on the next one. Any true artist never wants to repeat anything.

I think Puna nailed it! All the cleaning and dusting isn't really anything more than keeping the wife happy. Seeing we are just a bunch of slobs messing the garage up with our silly hobbies. I shape in what ever I happen to be wearing, sandals, and a dust mask.
After working in construction for so long, the glass doesn't really bother me anymore. I use spray on anti perspirant works good on keeping the pores closed while you are sanding glass. Then do a cool water rinse afterwards.

Get ready to get foam and glass dust everywhere. I have a Delta whole room power dust filter mounted to the ceiling, and two good shop vacs. My path back into the house is through the laundry area. I plan my shaping time to include dumping my clothes directly into the washing machine on my way out of my shop. I sand at a lower speed now too. It helps keep the dust from just floating everywhere.

BTW, I made some magnetic mounts on my shop door (like your roll up door) to mount my laser on. I have a board level mount where I shoot a level beam and measure the rocker. Then a higher mount for a center line beam.

 Lights look great!

Christian a funny but crazy guy. He's like the Steve-O of the surf world. Can you surf or travel while in rehab? He'd know.....
I've never seen him on a stand-up, either. Maybe surfing on one of T. Patterson's sup's?

That looks pretty bad, being so close to the rail. I'd definitely cut out a larger area and use some rigid foam reinforcement. Probably add a layer of s-glass or better along the rail too.

They could just weld the trucks end to end, and wah-lah. Pipeline the sea. They've been doing it in Mexico for years. That's probably why the lobster at Puerto Nuevo is so cheap...

I wonder if they can crank that wave pool up to double overhead?

Great job Will. Not many have ever, or will ever make a solo crossing like that. 40 plus miles is a quite a triumph. Be proud. Who knows, maybe more service men and women who suffer depression will discover paddling. Paddling is quite a peaceful place.

SoCal / Re: Re: First SoCal Winter Surf Advisory- Double-Overhead!!!!!

Wouldn't that be nice if we could predict wind direction in SoCal. I predict it will change from hour to hour. Surfline shows a little swell holding through the weekend. If the wind is calm early it should clean. We are heading into our June gloom months. Fog in the am, burning off in the pm. Surfing when you can see 40' in front of you. You got to be ready for those outside sets.....

Anyone who has shaped 1# EPS knows how fragile the foam is. During the course of shaping, dings just happen. A shaper friend of mine taught me this trick. Use a standard clothes iron and a damp paper towel, and re-expand the foam. After it's re-expanded, all you have to do is a little sand and maybe a little spackle.
