That space heater looks a little close.... Maybe lower the boards when you're running the heater?

SUP General / The 'Mystery SUP Surf Tour'???
« on: June 16, 2014, 09:19:00 AM »
I was out for my usual distance paddle from SanO to Seal rock and back. I noticed they were having a surf contest of some kind at Church ( A break south of Trestles. Some call it Churches, but it's just Church). They had a tower built with the announcers blaring away (one had a Hawaiian accent). I didn't pay much attention as I was focusing on my stroke. On my return leg I noticed a fellow paddler sitting outside the buoy at the contest. I stopped to say hi, and he said " did you even know they were having a Surf SUP competition here today?" I told him I had heard someone mention something last week, but I never saw any news of it. There was NO SPECTATORS! The only people on the beach or in the water appeared to be competitors. The announcers were making broadcast commentary, but to who? Pretty sad...
Maybe running this contests at a minimum is the only way they pencil out, for now. The sponsors cover the cost, and they don't have to worry about issues with non-paying crowds, or advertising costs. I still don't get the announcers commentary? I didn't see any webcast, or anything at all in my web search. Sitting outside is also a very poor vantage point. I gave it 2 minutes and went on my way.

The Shape Shack / Re: Rocker for a 9'6 Wave/Allround SUP

Maybe 3" in the tail. Leave a little more volume in the tail too. The 4- 1/2" is good for mushers. I would put just a little flip at the nose. Put a little bevel in the bottom rail for the front 1/3 of  the board (like a 50/50 rail). It helps in more ways than one on standups.

I would have probably used schedule 80 at a few of the connectors and tubing taking the bulk of the force. The angle probably reduced the force enough to be in a safe zone. But if the top one fails? Personally, I prefer using ABS. It's about the same cost schedule 40 PVC, but less than schedule 80. It's readily availible, and the 1-1/2" isn't to bulky. ABS won't just shear like PVC, It will bent and deform before it totally fails.

The ABS looks similar to the shaft of a paddle. Like the one in this picture.

What kind of break do you surf? Steep fast? Mushy weak rollers?

I like to do longer than the race distances for training at least once a week for a month prior. Maintaining a good pace, and knowing when to goo (around 10 miles for me).  Adjusting your stance ( staggered to parallel and back) will cause you use different muscle groups not only in stance, but in stroke. In the wind, I'll put my left foot almost 2' forward of my back in a surf stance. Your stroke on both sides will be very different, giving your typical muscle groups a rest. All this moving keeps your feet from going numb too.  Stay hydrated. The rest of the week I'll do a couple 6 to 8 milers as hard as I can.
I'm doing a 14 miler at 6700 elevation a month from now, so I'm starting my training as well. It has a lot of zig zags in to inlets and such. The winds can hit 20+ miles making for some painful cross winds. Last year the goo (cubes) saved my legs, and I finished strong. The year before, I didn't goo and my legs were completely gone at the finish. I ate a big hamburger and 2 hrs later I did an 8 mile sprint with an apparent second wind! It took me days to recover though.... You get to that point, you know you gave it 100%.

Distance SUP does the same thing for me. When I SUS a lot and not so much distance, I feel it in the waist. I just started doing distance again and within weeks I dropped 10 lbs. Plus I feel better. I even decaf'd myself, and I have more energy throughout the day. One of the best things about distanced paddling is everyone doing it feels the stoke.

Keep it up Bulky! It's not just a fad, it's a way of life brother....

I'm seeing it as 'Used weed for bored wife."

I would have considered using it another way, but considering all the considerations the considerate people on this forum make, I won't consider changing it!

Calling out sets to everyone seems like a kooky thing to do.

Same as yelling Go! Go! Go! to a total stranger who is trying to catch a wave. Nobody needs that stuff. It can be very annoying.

If someone sits outside and paddles into and misses every frick'n wave, then I kook it up with the Go! Go! shit. I want everyone to feel the stoke, but they got to have a little common sense.  Happened yesterday. I should have known. 75 deg air, 72 deg water, and this guy is SUS'g in a fullsuit. To cap it, a big outside set pops and he finally catches one then bails. I have to sit inside because my board has zero glide. I was in position for that wave. I was already pissed and stoke-o-meter was reading negative, so I split.

I don't differentiate consideration.

Thanks,  where do you get foam. I'm using crap building insulation sheets glued together

Sent from my D5503 using Tapatalk

I thought about laminating 1" foam sheets together with a layer of light glass in the middle. You could partially bend the rocker into it. I'm sure it would change the flex characteristics. Maybe no benefit?
