Deepmud motivated me to share a bulk of my distance paddling over the past year. I did actually do one race and surf at least once a week if not more, but I don't take pictures of that stuff. Anyway, I do carry my phone when I distance paddle so I take some pictures. Back at you Erik!

I'll start with daughter the engineer/ artist. She visited us this summer and wanted to paint one of my older Hobie 14' boards that I had recently repaired. She had a plan, and carried it out in record time. Made all the stencils herself. She even found some time to paddle with her dear old dad :)

Random / The history of Hang Gliding - Great film
« on: January 12, 2022, 10:51:40 AM »
I was trying to find old pictures of hang gliding in San Clemente, Ca. We used to watch them glide off a hill above my house and land in a field where we rode motorcycles. I came across this film. So good. A few of us can relate to the passion and not so calculated risks associated to those passions::)

Sessions / Good old fashion ocean paddle.
« on: December 23, 2021, 08:47:57 PM »
I thought there were no waves, but there were. Oh well, only brought my distance board. Water was cold, wind was cold, and the ocean had a little bump. Made through the waves without getting wet. I did 6 miles, with the first 3 straight into a cold head wind. Then turned for a down-breeze. It's amazing how one minute it's cold and you're paddling hard, pounding into the on coming chop, then you turn 180 degrees and it's just a quiet down wind cruise.
My old Rainbow sandals are about done, but my trusty 15 year old bamboo roll mat still has some life in it.

SUP General / I did a SUP race yesterday and it was fun!
« on: October 31, 2021, 10:41:14 PM »
It's been probably 3 years since my last SUP race. I started paddling distance again because my knee has been getting swollen biking and walking. Someone suggested I do the race in Dana Point Harbor that was coming up. I'd been paddling a lot so I figured I'd do it. Glad I did. There were probably 200 paddlers which surprised me. Good to see lots of race boards and talk with old racing friends that I hadn't seen for years. Just like old times. Mellow vibe, cheap entry, T-shirt, lunch, and a great group of old and new racers to hang out with and talk paddling.

I'm thinking about the Hanohano in January.

This is a picture quote thread. What comes to mind when you see this? I'll start.

"What has the world of surfing come to?"

Sessions / Distance and Surf on my 14'r
« on: September 08, 2021, 10:50:38 AM »
Last week I did an 8 mile distance paddle in cool overcast skies and glassy open ocean. When I paddled past Doheny there was some fun little knee high waves. I caught a few. This guy who was standing in the lineup on a big all arounder, asked me how old my 14' Hobie Elite was. I had to think about it and all the Battle of the Paddles it's been through, I guessed 11 years? Not sure why he asked? It does look a little beat:) It has never taken on water, which is amazing.

Anyway.. Surfed yesterday and it was shoulder high. So much fun.

A couple of weeks ago, I just needed to get out of the office and get some exercise. When COVID hit they had closed most of the beaches and the harbor. Nowhere to launch my unlimiteds. I could still surf, but I had to launch a mile from the break and paddle to it. So I started walking and riding my mountain bike in the hills behind our house. Now that everything is open and walking is kinda boring, I dusted off one of my unlimiteds and headed out. Felt great to just glide out in the ocean. Man was I sore. Oh those muscles... The ones I haven't used even SUP surfing. It's getting better seeing I've been going about every other day now.
Even paddled (social paddle / talk speed) a little with Rob Rojas. He's like "wear you been?" He was paddling a molded 14' Nelo 'speed board' that someone had loaned him. I'm thinking about strapping my hydration pack on and doing an early 10 miler later this week. It really is a great feeling just getting out into open water and forgetting the rat race.

Random / Delta Variant is here...
« on: July 14, 2021, 10:26:42 AM »
My vacinatted RN wife is just getting over Covid-19 illness. She was one of the first to be vaccinated (Moderna). Her and 10 of her hospital co-workers all recently contracted Covid from the same patient. All tracing protocals were taken. All of her co-workers are /were already vaccinated with various Covid vaccines. She's doing fine now. She had a high temp for two days, coughing, and partial loss of taste and smell. She isolated herself from everyone for more than a week and no one around her has become ill. She was symptomatic within two days of exposure to the patient. Pfizer is reccomending a booster shot which they say can booster the effectiveness even more against the new variants. Maybe the fact that everyone else in our family (me included) were vaccinated much later lends itself the idea that the vaccines do lose their effectiveness over time? Maybe yearly booster shots will be needed?
