Downwind and Racing / Hypothermia
« on: March 28, 2012, 01:52:44 PM »
I came across this article on iWindsurf and thought it a good read for all who SUP;

http://www.thoughtcrime.org/stories/brink-of-death/

I'm always asking myself "what's the worst thing that can happen" if conditions look a little dicey. As far a safety gear to carry, I rather look like a "kook" then die a "kook".

Gear Talk / Garmin 305 Problem--it leaks!!
« on: August 24, 2011, 06:29:04 PM »
After recommending a Garmin 305 in another post I find out they are not so great. They are NOT as waterproof as Garmin claims. The watch is a two piece design and they are sealed together with some glue. Around the seam is a rubber gasket so if the two sections stay tight no problem. But if the seam gets a little loose, which is easy to do from use, it will leak and start to corrode the internal contacts.
My 1st watch died while under warranty and was replaced. The replacement watch just died. At first I thought it was a dead battery as it it would work on the cradle but shut off when removed. Some searching on google found how to crack open the case to replace a battery but once open I saw the green corrosion and the problem. I managed to fix it with a bit of solder.

So a word to the wise, get a bit of sealant and fill in the gap between the two halves. It is between the side buttons and the lettering. You may also tape off the speaker holes on the rear. It's kind of a crappy design as there are no screws to hold the case together just some spots of glue.

Great watch when it works for the $$ but not built to handle lots of water exposure without adding the sealant to the seam. I closed off the speaker holes as well but I could not see how it could leak but others feel sweat gets in there.

Here was a helpful link to getting mine working again  http://alloytm.com/2011/01/23/repairing-garmin-forerunner-305/

It's not SUP but it sure presents a good view of conditions in those Hawaiian channels;
