Paddling and surfing just open last week in my hood and most everywhere else nearby today.  Hear ya on the fitness end, but it feels good to be in the water.  I'm passing on surfing for a bit to let the crowds thin and the red tide to disappear.

Gear Talk / Re: Strange bulge on new iSUP, is this normal?
« on: January 16, 2020, 10:08:26 AM »
It's a defect for sure, no need to ask. TELL your shop you want another or have them arrange to have it shipped to Starboard.  If you bought it online, good luck.

My Red bulged up near basketball size.  First on the deck and then the bottom.  Red said it was a QA issue, but regardless, the glue failed between layers and spots also looked like the drop stitched pulled away (like steamroller said).  In the end, the side seams showed signs of separation and the board  exploded like a bomb, blowing out multiple feet on one side.

While bonded layers and welded seams may be better tech then glue, it's no guarantee that they can't still fail.

Quickblade will make you most anything you want.  I have/had the top end carbon blade/carbon shaft Quickblades, but am just as happy with the much cheaper glass/carbon construction.  My last paddle was a custom adjustable which accidentally came glass/glass.  It's absolutely a great paddle and was super cheap.  You might be able to get just get a two piece depending on how you plan to pack the paddle.  It won't be $200, but call and ask.  Flyweight, glass/glass and 3-piece fixed length.

p.s.  I've got an adjustable Kialoa Insanity Travel paddle in the small blade, 83si.  It's a 3 piece adjustable and barely used.  I was going to post it in the classifieds; PM me if you're interested.

Here's a pretty spot on review:  https://www.inflatableboarder.com/kialoa-insanity-travel-paddle-review/

Waiting...  A ton of reviews on Amazon, mostly decent.  I've got a frozen zipper on a board bag.

I'm a sucker for this kind of hype and think how cool it would be to have that board in the back of my truck.

Then I remember I still have a Red that popped like a balloon, sitting outside.

Gear Talk / Re: Vent plug bubbling when dry
« on: May 12, 2019, 01:11:09 PM »
The board weighed 25 lbs without fins. Online says it should weigh a little over 20 lbs...

Listed weights are meaningless.  Gotta weigh your board brand new, so you have an actual baseline.  Bathroom scales are not accurate enough, period.  A cheapo travel scale is a much better option.  If it's feeling heavier, that's a tip off.  If it feels like the balance is off, it's another bad sign.  Have to say though, 25lb seems awfully heavy.

If you took the plug out, and hopefully with the plug recess dry, touch the foam below with a Q-Tip; if it comes back soaked, you've got a problem.

You still haven't mentioned if you checked to see if the Gore-Tex layer is intact???  Use a magnifying glass, but it's the least likely possibility.  Gore-Tex does not bubble water.  If air is bubbling through water in the plug, that's cool.  If water is bubbling out and onto your board and running off, that's not.

Besides what everyone else has posted already, check around any insert and especially the fins and the LiftSUP handle; give them all a good flex, looking for cracks, pinholes or water.  And I hate to mention it, but it's happens a lot, cracks can occur under the traction pad; and that will be a pain to find and fix.

Why not do both?  Camping is the way in Baja; there's a Hostel at Cuatro's, but road conditions are a ? mark.  Awesome fun pointbreak, haven't been there for years.

Gear Talk / Re: Thin rails, not for surfing
« on: March 04, 2019, 11:24:15 AM »
Since we've gone off the rails from the Search and I threw the 'Sunova Surf' out to get you some of the Sunova feel, I figure at this point, my Excursion and any longboard style SUP isn't going to cut it.  Here's a much better compromise.

Check out the Surftech Aleka 11'2" at REI.  It's shaped by the legendary Joe Bark (I'm a fan and he did start the Race board revolution) , the shape is a nice blend of a surfable touring board which at 29" is narrower then most and looks ideal for the lighter smaller paddler.  Compared to the Cruise Control, it's going to be lighter, quicker and more agile.  The Surftech construction is excellent and it's on sale at REI.  Board of the Year at Outside Magazine if you buy into that marmalade.

And if you really want to go off the rails and impress everyone, get the 'Rail'.  It looks like it is half off at JL and that's an insane deal.

Smoking deal on the Exhibition, I would have been tempted to buy one as a backup board.  Here's my two cents from last year....

https://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php/topic,33508.msg378053.html#msg378053

but I can't help adding a couple of cents more.

For starters, the Search is pretty unique in it's design.  The extended low tapered rail line that gives it it's in the water stability and lack of corkyness, is also the reason why some users just call it flat out slow.

I'll be the 'Debbie Downer' here and say none of the boards suggest have thin rails (at all) and will feel nothing like the Search on the water, not even close.  Even the Exhibition with it super thin tail carries much of it's thickness in the standing area to the rails and will not give you that low in the water feeling the Search has.

Best I can do is suggest you get over the Search (I did) and take a look at a different Sunova, the Surf 10'6" x 30".  Plenty of volume to cruise on, not too wide and you'll still get some of that Sunova feel with it's low volume (158 l).  It's just a starting point, as there are a ton of similar longboard style SUPs out there, but when it comes to the Search, there is only one.

Ha, ha, I'll gladly bash my 2015 Red.  It was twisted and Red warranty'd it, but failed to collect the original board.  So I sold the new replacement and used the twisted board for a "friend's board".  Within a couple of months, the dual layer delaminated creating huge bubbles (half of a basketball size) on the deck and one on the bottom.  Shortly after that, the seams started to show signs of separating.  Red admitted to glue issue with this board and my board was a clear example of a crummy glue job.  Funny enough, as the seam started separating more, the twist disappear.  This all happened in less then a year.

This board was barely used, rinsed after every use and and stored indoors.  Fast foward to last year when a friend showed up in town.  I pumped the board up and left it for him to use in a no sun area on the side of the house.  Sometime when no one was around, it exploded, smashing an aluminum pan along with some other nearby items.  First time I got mad.  Not because the board blew up, but because my friend wasn't paddling it at the time:)

Needless to say, I'll never trust one of these PVC toys again, I'll never paddle one in the open ocean and I'll never ever buy another Red.

Gear Talk / Re: Fishing set up for a Stand Up
« on: August 25, 2018, 08:55:06 AM »
There's a whole group of paddlers that fish almost everyday right outside the lineup in the L41.

Just the basic set up and it seems to work.

This is Rick Duckart. He catches a lot of fish.

That ain't no 25 knots and 2-4 feet of surf... :)  Seriously, I wouldn't even go out in those conditions (Hawaii, not Cali) and a box and rod holders would be ridiculous.

Buy a hand line spool with a couple of shock cord leaders, heavy mono to a flouro leader, connect it your leash cup and your favorite trolling lure and paddle away.  Pray you don't catch something really big!  A line cutter and / or a velcro release to your leash cup can't hurt.
