Hey y'all,

I'm headed to Corpus Christi on the second week of May. I have one friend that has been down that way and recommended Bird Island as a good destination for a camper van and easy access to wing foiling. I appreciate any further recommendations about winging, food, and places I should check out in general. I love dropping in on surf shops to get the flavor of a place. Hopefully the wind will cooperate this time of year. I also prone surf so appreciate advice on locations for that too.

Thanks!

I own three Naish boards. One of them is a decade old 14' carbon downwind board, the other two are Hovers. I'm happy with them all. I still find the old 14' a joy to paddle and the Hovers are light, strong, and well made. I didn't go for Naish foils or wings; other brands felt like better investments based on reviews and inspection.

I have found this site extremely useful and entertaining. I have purchased stuff on the classifieds. The videos shared are great! BUT. I do question how representative the opinions are of the market. I just noticed when logging on that there were 75 guests and 4 members. Seems a whole lot of interested viewers that don't voice their preferences compared to the few that do.

I don't like to rain on the wing sup parade. There are a few contributors that support wing sup and I value their point of view. My own experience is that a wing and skateboard is a lot more fun. I agree with those that suggest you find a used 130ish board and older foil if at all possible. I wish I would have taken this advice instead of buying new.

Don't forget to put the Aqua Seal in the freezer when you're done.
I use to do this when I had access to a chemical freezer.  Now I clean the cap and threads good.  Wrap with tape.  Put in a ziplock bag.  Put in a plastic container.  Then put the plastic container in a glass jar closed tightly.  This seems to work.  The idea is to prevent evaporation of the toluene.  Toluene is not something that you want in a food freezer.

Thanks for the heads-up on Toluene. I had no idea.

There is a reason the local shops are advertising 5/4 and 4/3 wetsuits.

A shop in Jupiter had a 3.5 Unit is stock so I punched the ticket. Thanks for the input.

How would the new Unit compare with the F one Strike V2? Anyone? I'm going to get a new 3.5 and these are my two favorites.

I have surfed (long and short board) Oregon since the 80's. It wasn't always as agro as it is now. At this point I would think twice about leaving my vehicle unattended in some places.

It would be interesting to hear (and see) how you make out on your big trip to Maui.

A physical therapist or doctor is the best reference. Having said that, I do exactly the same exercises as I did when I was younger only with less weight. I do pyramids with each set. Presses, pull downs, flyes, etc. I have recently added leg work to strengthen my quads and improve balance by standing from a sitting position on the floor with no hands. I do yoga a few times a week to increase flexibility. I figure at this stage it is my job to do what I can to keep fit and mentally engaged. A lot of the time my exercise is guided by what I'm trying to rehab.  ;)

Considering the Reedin SuperWing X 3.6. What wind range should I expect at 160 lbs? Anyone riding the 3.6?

Gear Talk / Re: Board recommendations for the chop
« on: January 13, 2022, 09:56:09 AM »
After reading the responses I would add that there is a a big difference between how an inflatable and a hard board perform. You will notice a significant difference in how a hardboard feels under foot in heightened sensitivity and control. Jumping from an inflatable to a more efficient outline in a composite board will make a big difference. You may find that a moderately narrow outline with 29 to 30" will be sufficient to give you the performance you want. My favorite touring board is an old 14' Naish Glide that is 29" wide.

I think you will regret going to a 26" wide board and strongly recommend you try one before you spend the money.

What is the best pump for accurate and higher PSI?

Dual handles are nice, a bottom handle is essential if you're entering through shorebreak. A bottom handle automatically ensures the foil is away from your body. A top handle ensures the foil is across your body, either in front of your thighs (always bad) or behind your thighs (sometimes bad).

Weight is a huge deal.

Length hurts maneuverability worse than width. Width helps stability more than length. You might therefore think short wide would be best, and it often is--until you want to turn hard. Touching a rail down is an instant and ugly crash unless your name is Derek, or Johnny, or Mary Rose, or Kai. Bevels help, but they kind of suck for initial stability (good for secondary stability though). Thicker helps, unless you're in chop or the board gets corky, which means once you start to tip you can't stop.

Board designs require endless compromise. Home-made designs generally reflect a limited set of experiments and conclusions. The last board I had Mark Raaphorst make for me featured his fantastic craftsmanship and my limited design ideas. I should have just shut up. I'm back to riding the wing board he made for me last year with minimal input from me. It rocks.

How did the old and new boards from Mark Raaphorst differ?
