2016 Naish Glide GTW touring board 14' x 30", bought new last winter. Paid $1100 almost exactly a year ago. Very sturdy and stable touring board. Perfect for a larger person and/or carrying lots of gear. I am looking for a smaller SUP - 12'6" or less of similar value. If inflatable, good quality model that's not too old with all accessories.

I got it partly for nearshore fishing. It's a great board for open ocean but not great for fishing and I am getting something more specific to fishing for Christmas. Big people love the board. I am not a big person and I didn't do the sort of touring I thought I might, so the board is overkill for me. Looking for something shorter, maybe slimmer if a touring or racing board or might look at an all around that could handle a little small wave surfing.

Selling for cash, it's $750. Preference for trade is because I can be more reasonable about what I consider "similar value" than I will be about taking less cash. Raleigh NC but head to southern half of NC coast a lot as well as upper Pamlico. Not in a rush.

SUP General / "SUPyak"
« on: November 27, 2019, 05:26:28 PM »
So the big guy is putting one of these under the tree. I fish a lot and my boards are not great for that. I decided to go with a hybrid. Not great at either, but pretty good from all my research. I am actually getting a knock off (a "how are they not being sued" copy) of this board, the Vibe Maverick.

So what do you think - flat kayak you can stand on, SUP that converts or???

Training, Diet, and Fitness / "immediate" sea legs
« on: September 21, 2019, 08:51:58 AM »
Curious if this is a common thing and if others do any warm up or whatever to help. This is my second year of paddling. Lots of miles both years. I have decent balance and paddling skills.

I have paddled offshore to fish a fair amount this year; tomorrow might make 10. A couple of times I have come in early, taken a little break and then practiced in and out, trying to surf a little with limited success on my big touring board. In the smallish surf we paddle through, usually in the 2' range, I don't have much trouble paddling out or coming in. Except first thing in the morning when I am headed out loaded up. I have scaled back on gear substantially, so not as much of an issue as it was the first few trips when I unloaded my trunk onto the front of my board and ended up losing some of it.

I usually go out on my knees because I am wobbly the first time I pop up. It doesn't take much time standing and paddling to get my sea legs and when I go in and out I pop up ready to go. It's pretty much a first time of the day thing.

Any suggestions? I fish with kayakers, so they are no help.

Training, Diet, and Fitness / had another little stretch of down time

Old guy stuff; when the meds fail to do much of anything about the enlarged prostate, the doctor can. Did a clean biopsy since he had a fair amount. Signs of chronic inflammation; bicycling is pretty much out unless I get the split seat. Paddling is fine again.  Big fun...

With the development of the foil, this has created a contentious conundrum in water sports which has advocates wanting to bolt a foil onto anything that floats in the name of progress and the way of the future.

‘Wing Surfing’ is now the latest must do, revolutionary diversionary idea, seen as the best thing since bottled beer or sliced bread. But already the jokes have sprung up about it, with images of umbrellas being used, bed sheets and other amusing anecdotes. Add to this a foiling board and we have ‘Wing Foiling’, accepting you have to wonder if the evolutionary steps are in the correct order and as to whether those who can foil, will be satisfied with the lower limits of speed and elevation when compared to their option of Kite Foiling?

SUP General / Another shark bite in NC
« on: June 11, 2019, 05:23:45 AM »
Season not off to a great start. A surfer in Ocean Isle this time.

https://www.wral.com/surfer-bitten-by-shark-off-ocean-isle-beach/18443466/

The 17 year old girl bitten a couple of weeks back lost her leg. Then there was that gator spotted on the beach at Topsail. This kind of stuff is not good for tourism.

I am still headed offshore this weekend...

Fish Tales, Stand Up style / Offshore winds suck
« on: May 28, 2019, 05:25:53 AM »
I went offshore fishing for the third weekend in a row. This time we went to a different artificial reef a couple of miles out from Topsail Island NC. I caught a shark about 3' long that was a lot of fun to bring in, but not so much to get off. A couple of kayakers that were better prepared for releasing angry predators helped me and I have a better idea of what to bring for that. I also caught BSB, croaker and a lizard fish. Some gray trout were caught. No Spanish and no flounder. The wind picked up more than was predicted and it was a tough slog back in. I ended up kneeling and using my yak paddle. I am beat (fished yesterday) but really enjoying this, except for fighting the wind coming in. I think I will stick to onshore breezes to go that far out. Furthest point yesterday was about 3 miles out and I had support from some young bulls paddling Vikings that would have towed me in if the old man couldn't handle it.

I went with some kayakers. We trolled for a while a few hundred yard off the beach and then paddled out (actually they were pedaling) about a mile and a half to an artificial reef and trolled and drifted through there. I only got a couple of smallish bluefish, but saw some nicer fish taken. I will keep at it.

The wind is a frenemy; it made it a pain to head out and troll when it picked up. My spare paddle was a kayak paddle and sometimes I kneeled and used it. But it made the drifts work well. Choppy with occasional larger swell' took me a while to get my land legs back. I was out about 6 hours, paddling hard probably 75% of the time. Great workout.

I had 3 very large sea turtles surface and snort right next to me (not all at the same time). One medium sized shark swam under me.

Another name for the witness list - Manigault Newman

https://www.salon.com/2019/05/06/omarosa-manigault-newman-claims-trump-administration-destroyed-boxes-of-mueller-related-evidence/

Trump claims the Mueller report exonerates him, but doesn't want the person who wrote it to offer an opinion on whether or not that assessment is anywhere close to accurate. Even some GOP politicians who have been backing him until now disagree with his interpretation. He wants all attempts to examine his taxes, any of his businesses, potential obstruction, the millions of dollars unaccounted for by his campaign and inquiries into the overrides of decisions on security clearances all to cease based on his assessment. Claims he has had the most successful first two years of a presidential term ever. Claims the DEMs have kept him from getting anything done with their "failed coup".

Random / Hey Pono - finally found a use for the ESP32
« on: April 17, 2019, 06:56:52 PM »
All that fancy hardware baked in - WiFi, BT, dual processing, etc...

I am using it to take some simple commands to drive the DACs move a couple of galvos only a short distance. The galvos take +5 and -5 and I grounded the -5 inputs and just drive the +5, but only up to 3.3v. The guy I am doing it for develops commercial microscopes and this is to point a laser around for some kind of spectral processing. It doesn't have to move the mirrors far at all. And he actually has money - a part time gig that pays. Anyway, I will probably get 12 bit 5v DACs mounted on a PCB for a little more range and precision if he moves forward with it. Seems likely since the prototype can do what he was hoping. He picked up some cheap imported galvos and driving them with a microcontroller the cost of it compared to the higher end stuff is amazingly cheap. Seems to have pretty good accuracy and stability.

Random / Very bad economic indicator today
« on: April 01, 2019, 05:38:18 PM »
I was let go at my job. The client reduced what they were willing to pay my employer for ongoing support and as the most senior and highest paid team member, my head went on the block. I have never been unemployed in my 39 year career until now. Now I am looking for work at 60. We will ride through it okay and I will find something, but it sucks. That was a good job. Over 24 years with steady increases for most of it; I was making substantially more than my position normally pays. They did give me some severance and I am helping with the transition; burning bridges don't provide much light. I was hoping to hang on to this job for 4 or 5 years and then retire. I hope I am as good at interviews as I used to be.

Training, Diet, and Fitness / shoulder surgery went great
« on: January 18, 2019, 12:14:21 PM »
got home from shoulder surgery a few hours ago. it went well. only the labrum needed stitching, the rotator cuff will rehab okay with intact labrum. some bone spurs were also removed.

i am using sprix, choosing to walk around the opioid mine field. i have pt in 6 days. i should be able to use the hand, sling supported, as soon as the block wears off. after bandage comes off on monday, I can shower and use recumbent.

https://www.sprix.com/patient/about-sprix/
strange downside - nasal mist messes with stomach

i could be paddling sooner in april than i thought if rehab goes well.

Technique / Dealing with nasty rollers on a touring SUP
« on: December 13, 2018, 04:14:09 PM »
Next spring through fall, I will be doing some offshore fishing 1-3 miles out and some nearshore touring. In some cases when touring I may have a stretch of a few miles where landing will be difficult if waves kick up. For those who know NC, one place in particular is AB to CLO paddling in front of Shackleford banks, which is very popular with shell collectors because of the pounding shore breaks it gets when the waves kick up. So I could get caught in a pop up squall and have some distance left to cover before I can get to land. I got a board that is supposed to be able to handle it (within reason), a 2016 Naish Glide 14x30. Naish says:

The Glide 14’0” X30 GTW is the ideal choice for riders who want exceptional stability for touring, enjoying downwind ocean runs, recreational racing and fitness training. Its newly developed rocker and bottom shape easily adapt to flatwater conditions while the tail rocker still allows for outstanding open ocean performance. It features a penetrating V nose and a flat rocker for phenomenal gliding performance and has ample thickness and width for stability and early planing on the open ocean in any conditions.

No, I don't take the part at the end - "in any condition" - literally, but I think the board is capable of dealing with a hell of a lot more than I am (yet). I am really looking forward to gliding phenomenally. I would think that most of the time I will either be going with them or sideways to them though in some rare circumstances I might be trying to go into them. By them I mean big swell/rollers, possibly breaking on top, probably wind driven. Any tips and/or links to videos/blogs/articles would be appreciated.

Gear Talk / Convert two piece paddle to one piece?
« on: December 07, 2018, 04:40:07 AM »
I got a really good deal on a brand two piece CF paddle. The seller warned me about being careful with the adjustment closure - too lose and it slips, plus one of the screws could back out and get lost quicker than I might think. But he also warned me that too tight can crack CF. I mentioned the idea of maybe converting to a one piece and he said some people do.

So, I wanted to get opinions on whether or not it is a sensible thing to do and if it is, whether or not it is something I could easily do myself.

ETA - I am just under 5'8", so I could remove some of the length of the top piece before converting it if it is easy to cut. Between that and removing the closure, I might take another ounce or so off. Not all that significant, but more than 5%.

Thanks!
