Foil SUP / Re: First to FOIL MAVERICKS

Got it.  Was able to easily change the perspective on my laptop.
I just grabbed and turned it every which way, but now I see the
direction controller on the top left of the video
- that works too, even easier.

Very cool.

Cowabunga!

Interesting reverse perspective - I enjoyed it.
Yeah, the wave didn't look that large but obviously it was
and it was a long ride.

Saw you pass the lone proner.

Was that the foil whistling?

New asymmetrical foil mast.  Is that for backside or frontside?

Great advice.

Besides getting more forward on the board, I also squat to reduce wind resistance
until I'm sure I've caught the wave.

Also, and this was talked about in another thread a couple of years ago,
be careful if you have to turn your board over in heavy wind.  I had my
board take off when I flipped it - luckily the leash contained it and no one
was hit - when I turned it over - righted the board - the wind grabbed it
and shot it up into the air.  I should have kept two hands on it.

Random / Re: How long is your ride to the water?
« on: November 13, 2019, 05:49:50 PM »
About 5 minutes depending upon traffic.

I debate whether I'd really like to be closer or not, but,
I think I've missed some better days that I would have got if I was just down the street.
Also, I'd likely surf closer to dusk if I was just down the street.

Parking is part of the issue.  With 25 pound boards I like to park pretty close.
I'm pretty picky on where I'll park.  Occasionally, I can't get a spot that I like
and I go do something else and drive back later.  LOL, its more crowded these days
and I probably drive more miles going around the break getting a good parking spot
than I do driving from home.

Nice to hear your progress on the B&B.

What were the considerations that compelled you to try a laydown longboard?

A great idea!  Sounds like it works very well.

I like having a long board box with a Thruster or a 2+1 setup.
It lets you change the turning arc by moving the center fin up and back.

Also, when you have that you can use more upright fins which I think are faster -
you don't have to use different swept fins to adjust the turning arc.

For smaller and slower waves, I like more of a pivot, so I make the cluster tighter
by moving the center fin forward.

For bigger, fast storm type waves, I move the center fin all the way back to make
the turning arc wider - it makes the board more stable while surfing fast waves - a wider arc
and gets rid of any twitch.  To make it even more stable in the big fast surf you can
switch to fins with more rake, either the sides or the center or all of them.

I'd love to get some of those Halo fins - I need to look for them again.
My favorite single fin is a Revers "D" fin.  Those Halo fins look like mini-Reverse "D" fins.

Very cool!

The Hook?

Couldn't tell, is one of them a SUPer?

Experiment away, but if it looks like this, well...

"Reverse thrusters" might work but probably not "reverse 2 +1"

SUP General / Re: What to wear to SUP surf in ~65 degree water
« on: June 03, 2019, 10:14:25 AM »
62 degree air temperature and sunny (and not too windy) => board shorts no rubber,
This is with water temp maybe from 52 on up, but I don't spend much time in the water
- mostly water temp is 55 or higher. This is for surfing - so pretty close to shore.

Overcast and/or windy is trickier.
I've got a 1.5 mm vest I may wear.
Too cold for that a 1.5-2mm zip T-top I like.
I also have wetsuit shorts that I wear if cold or if waves are big for extra float.

Colder than that a 3/2 full suit - its a triathlon suit which is extra stretchy & floaty.

You "need" a quiver of rubber.

@ Noo Noo

Those wave conditions in the video are a lot better than the one's I usually encounter on Galveston Island. At the time of this posting, take a look at our wave conditions today down on the island.

The webcam is for the 43rd Street Webcam. It is a camera which you can control. The camera control is on the bottom right of the window. The different camera positions are in the upper right hand corner of the window. Take a look at the different positions. My favorite is the 43rd Street Jetty. You can control the camera for one minute of time if no one else is controlling it first.

And this webcam does not require Flash. Just HTML5.

Hi Galviston. The sea state looked pretty familiar to be honest, except the weather looked far brighter. Pretty messed up, lots of chop and no real shape to it. Even worse when the wind picks up I guess

Worth noting that no one really surfs these local beaches of mine either. Perhaps one but I've never seen anyone. One is very popular with the kite surfers though as its a cracking beach for that.

I Note Night Wing got a long board (but not too wide) pretty big volume for those conditions:
SUP Sports One World: 11'1" x 30" x 4.5" @ 173 Liters

...
It came with a big 9 inch longboard fin with two small quad rears and it felt over finned. I've never understood the reasoning behind having big fins on longer boards. I don't think board length affects fin dynamics all that much, at least for the way I surf.
...
The quad rears that came with the board are 4.26". I guess they're not really that small.  What bothers me is that they are rears when I would think they should be fronts. There must be a difference or they wouldn't call them different names.
...

Yeah, generally, people would use quad fronts in a 2+1 setup, at least for surfing moderate and smaller waves.
Quad fronts are usually flat inside foil while quad rears are a 50/50 foil.
The flat inside foil sidebites are more turny/snappy but have more drag and on bigger faster waves can make a board twitchy.
The 50/50 foil sidebites have less drag and are less twitchy on bigger faster waves - I've read that is what they use at Mavericks, for example.  I've pretty much verified this over the last couple of months of surfing bigger, faster storm surf.

So, for flat paddling the quad rears would make sense, since less drag - also less drag for catching a wave but
not as turny/snappy for smaller wave surfing.

Always dealing with the trade off - flat water paddling and easier take off versus on the wave surfing.

I'm almost always trying to noseride - so another issue into the mix.  In my case, a larger middle fin with smaller site bites works pretty well & for bigger faster waves - 50/50 sides.  I have some real small ones that can help a narrow (front to back) bigger fin be able to hold a bottom turn.

Also, I've found that fatter foil fins seem to paddle slower (more drag) than thinner foil fins.
(but people say fatter foiled fins turn more easily and they probably do).  If it is crowded (and it often is where I surf) I like a thinner foil (and smaller sides) for faster paddling speed to help me catch waves more easily.
