Boards probably donated by Tahoe SUP. The guy in blue is Ronny Ayers who works for Tahoe SUP & if you look at race results he would catch you. Thank god he is does not wear a gun.

Starboard had a marketting position in Tailand. It might have been a great opportunity for someone to offer some great ideas. The world is not what it appears sometimes but getting out & paddling sure beats sweating the small things in life.

I recognize Dave Hunt(?). I think he used to be an employee at Alpine Meadows in Tahoe. At least he is making a good living because it is hard to make it in the ski industry.

I have wondered why my Starboards were matte finished. I don't think I will be waxing them in hopes of making them faster. Thanks for the insight.

That is correct. I bought the Thule clamps for my Subaru, but they fit great onto the upper side bars of the lumber rack also. I can also fit 2 longboards on the lumber rack portion under the Thule setup. I will see if have some closeups. Easy & simple retrofit.

Standard lumber rack modified with Thule 78" bars. 14' BARK loaded in picture. I can adjust for longer lengths also. Solid setup.

Are you towing by hand? Have you tried to retrofit to tow behind bike because you will need that option to tow down to Sugar Pine or Waters Edge? Looks like its a solid rig.

Living at 6200' I have seen delamination occur with boards not vented. Whenever traveling down to sea level I unscrew the vent plugs, but I have also forgot to put back in the frenzy of getting out into the surf. My bad. The no brainer model would be the gortex style vent but when do you know if membrane has been compromised? If the board doesn't have venting we will retrofit it with vent. Expensive test, better to be safe than sorry. Living at high elevation poses an additional issue beyond just temperature changes.

There is a river paddlefest on the Truckee River in Reno at the new whitewater park in May. River race & possible rodeo on standing wave at the park. May be a good opportunity to demo river boards. Info available on website. Sorry I don't have link on hand.

Willi Willi harbor has boards for rent. Fairly close to Poipu. Some small wind waves to ride on west side of harbor & sheltered calmer water on east side. $25/hr. Hanalei Bay has boards also but typically to tour Hanalei River. Rent at Black Pot Beach or also in town. Be respectful if you choose to take in surf at Hanalei & have fun. Wish I was going.

On the West Shore of Tahoe I would have to say Sugar Pine, DL Bliss, Meeks Bay. South Shore Pope Beach. East Shore Sand Harbor. The Lake is down pretty low now so good quality launching spots are becoming more limited.

The Big Easy is great beginner board. The price definately depends on the technology as Easy Rider states. Are you using for surf, flat water or both. I am at 2 bills & I prefer the Starboard 11'2" Blend for surfing but am downsizing to somewhere in the 10' range for manueverability in the bigger surf. The Starboard Cruiser has the same volume but a little longer & narrower. I find this board better for flatwater & it also surfed pretty well in the waist high range. But you can put your kid & your dog on the front of the Big Easy. It would be a fair price at $1000 if was in good condition & in the tuff skin technology (camo deck). Don't forget about the cost of a good paddle in your budget.

Hey Jeff - Just got my renewal notice for my insurance for my SUP business in Tahoe. My policy is for guide/outfitter which covers rentals, lessons, tours & events. There is some inland marine language for the boards but I am covered with my clients for liability if something goes wrong. Its running about $1500 for the year. It may cost more in future once gross receipts start going up. The main things I had to provide was a copy of a Release of Liability form my clients sign before they paddle out, a Health & Safety Plan, Business License, & a gross estimate of my earnings. Let me know if need more info or contacts.

Why not do everything. Why live in a square box when you can live in a well rounded circle. I SUP, short board, long board, ski, snowboard, skate ski, tele ski. I try to do it all & equally well at all. Its all about having fun. Yes I do get bummed when I hear & see the negative attidudes from surfers when in fact I am a third generation surfer. I still surf with my dad (65 years old) but he is also stoked to see me riding a new tool for surfing. He is amazed at its versatility. Ankle snappers to overhead & yes just paddling flat water. My Santa Cruz session this weekend was filled with remarks & stink eye, but I always try to wait my turn, keep on smiling & paddle into some of the better waves that come through. Only if we could all have a perfect peak to ourselves, but thats not reality most of the time.

There is information on the Coast Guard website regarding this issue. When you use a paddle, sail, or motor you are now considered a vessel. If you use your hands, prone paddlers, you are exempt. But one positive thing in my research which creates a gray area is the swim & surf zone which as I read do not require a PFD. Swim zone 300 yards & the surf zone could be? We have been questioned in Lake Tahoe but have been sticking to our swim zone rule & leash/board concept. It may change this year & they might not be as receptive to our interpretations.
