I'm surprised it only has 1600 views, I watched it a handful of times.  Sometimes when I'm lying in bed, I grab my Iphone for some SIC porn  ;D

Great vids.. Great conditions..  :D

DJ
Thanks DJ, you are the master when it comes to downwind footage.  I kept thinking about your camera mounts.  Mine would of torn off and been on the bottom of the ocean floor or maybe I'd get impalled by it.  It's also a lot of work to stay close to other paddlers, then to come home and edit it all up to share.  Thanks for all the time you spend, it is appreciated and more people watch than comment on your vids.  Good stuff mate!

Hey Takeo - thanks for the welcoming words.. Stoked to hear that Gumby is still around, hopefully someone will realize what a valuable piece of downwinding history that board is... buy it, and get it back in the water where it belongs.

Its great to have a shaper with the experience of Bill Foote cut loose with some downwinding history and board design perspectives.. I'm glad you enjoyed the blog. http://foote-surfboards.com/?p=387

I read with interest what you say about production boards suiting the masses, and why they go for a safe middle-of-the-road design. I think it is a shame that there are not more shapers producing custom made DW boards...  as this is probably where the cutting edge in design really happens - where its still more for the love, than for the money

Maybe I can find a board for my friend and do a trade for Gumby, I want him back! He's had a makeover. Put some paint and decals over his wounds, but he still got a lot of heart!

I recently went to Japan and have always respected the true artisan who does it for the love and not only for the money.  It's like their soul is poured into their work, whether it be a plate of sushi, a bonsai plant, or a handmade knife.  Same goes for boards in my opinion.  There is something special about that handmade board that keeps evolving.  SIC has catered to the masses, yet at the same time, Mark still can do what he loves.  Downwind paddling is a niche market, but it's catching on all over the world.  I'm excited for it's growth! Thanks for sharing your stoke, I feel your passion! Aloha!

And Yes, Takeo, Maui Belle is now Bill Foote's lovely wife--a fairly recent development. A rapidly advancing surfer and budding downwind fanatic. And you'll love this--the post is about Gumby!!!

Thanks Bill for that information! Gumby still lives!  I actually sold it to a friend, but he almost never paddles it and was letting his little kids play around on it.  I got on it the other week and took it for a paddle, still a great board.  I offered to buy the board back, he declined.  Just makes me sad seeing Gumby sitting in a garage.

Mrs. Foote, welcome to the Zone!  I knew there was some kind of connection.  I know Mr. Foote makes awesome downwind boards, everyone on Maui knows that and often thought to myself that with more information on his website, I'm sure that would help sales.  I was glad to see the recent website upgrade.  Love the history on the Maliko 14 and love the videos! Pictures are also great! Keep um coming!  The layered carbon pics make all men, and some women, drool!

Regarding your question on performance, I agree with PonoBill.  I have an Ace 14'x25" that is very fast on flat water, moderate chop, small to moderate downwind.  But if I was to take it on a big downwind day, at least in our type of downwind with swells from multiple directions, I'd be falling all day.  My Bullet would be a better choice.  On a flat day, the Ace is faster.  So, yes, there are always compromises.  Guys like Jeremy, Conner, or Kai, can fly around on super skinny boards and are ultra fast.  Put any average guy on it and they probably wouldn't be as fast.  Production boards seem to target the masses.  If a production board is too tippy, it would affect sales.  The Naish Javelin is a fast board, but not many are sold in Hawaii because in our ocean conditions, it's a tippy board.  The Naish Glide is a better seller because it's much more stable. It's so hard to put it all into words because there just seems to be so many other factors like skill, paddler size, ocean conditions, etc, etc, etc.  Hope others chime in and give their thoughts.  I love it when a shaper explains the evolution of a board.  Mr. Foote's blog was a good read!

I had PBills' V2 and my V1 upside down next to each other on the sand.  Notable is how much more wrapped the rails are on the V2.  So even though it's wider from the very widest points, the break on the bottom is much farther around and looks just as narrow from that edge to the other edge on the bottom.

More rounded rails seem to behave better.  Also notable was how much more the tail is pulled in.  Increased volume is also good.  It's improved PBills' paddling by leaps.

Thanks Bill for that comparison.  We had my board stacked on a V1 but didn't do much measurement comparison.  I wonder how the pulled in tail helps in downwind.  You are right about the rounded rails, they definitely behave better when swells hit you from various direction.

Cool stuff Robert!  I also like the GoPro handles, I thought of doing that since I also collect cutoffs from our local shop.  I don't use the GoPro handheld though but maybe I could make an extended mount for my board, I'll try!

Glad you got some my brother.  I was pissed.  And I felt so crappy it wasn't even possible to consider doing a run.

1P2P,
I know the feeling, was down the other weekend but luckily got better by this past weekend.  My friends did an HK run, they said it was pretty nuts.  Hope you get some wind this weekend.

I'm interested in anyone's take on the compromise between performance/speed and stability. Is a narrower board necessarily faster?

I see you are a site sponser and have posted about Foote boards in 2 of your 3 posts.  Do you represent Foote? Just curious.

BTW, that's JF808 out in front on both videos on his production Bullet.  Thanks Jeff for letting us play in your backyard! Let's go again soon!

Great video's Takeo. Thanks for posting!!
The 2nd vid looked a lot windier/bumpier--how windy and how big were the swells. I know the camera flattens out the looks of the swells.

Wind gauges showed just under 40 on the first run, and over 40 on the second run with gusts up to 50.  When we got out after the second run, the wind increased even more, bordering dangerous.  When we saw the whales breaching in our path, we decided to play it smart and call it a day.  I don't know how big the swells were.  In some of my video shots, my friends in front of me disappeared.  Big Island swells can get big, so this felt on the smaller side but the wind was pretty intense.  The texture was probably the best we have had but it's still a wild ride.  Rudderless boards would have it's challenges for sure.

I LOVE my V2, to an almost unhealthy degree. It's tricky keeping the nose from poking, and I've had some deep dives, with water rushing past my shins, but DAMN is it good. Fast, very responsive, and teaches you how to read water. That or perhaps how to dive off your board when it stops dead.

My F16 fits the swells better, and feels like a little Lotus Elise while the Bullet V2 is pure Ferrari. Doesn't dart through the twisties as well as the Lotus, but it's magic in the sweepers.

Bill,

I love my Bullet V2 also! You can kinda see in the video of the dives the nose was making and on one of my falls, it stopped dead.  This was only my 2nd and 3rd time in real downwind with this board, so still getting use to it, but I really loved it's predictability.  I didn't feel out of control, even in the strong winds. It also wants to take up and go, which is why I had those 2 banana peel type falls.  A swell would come, the board wanted to go, but the driver wasn't ready, funny stuff!

Here's a guy on Oahu making broken boards into chairs, pretty neat! It needs a beer holder though  ;)

Other than less rocker in the nose and a little wider what do you attribute the better gliding abilities of the V2 to? Has the bottom changed ? Volume in a different area of the board ?

I would love to see some DJ type pics of the V2. Other than seeing it at a race here in Hawaii Kai from a far and these Gopro vids I have not seen the board up close.

Scotty,
Here's SIC's own statement:

Less effort to get into bumps
Better ability to connect bumps
Longer glide
Same top end
V2 more stable
About 1 1/4" wider (now 28")
Widest point moved forward
Same Length  (17'4")
Same Hollow molded construction
Same Weight (approx 30 lbs)
Volume moved forward and out to the Rails
Larger EVA deck area
Improved Graphic Options

From comparing to the V1 side-by-side, the V2's volume is moved forward, the nose area is full.  It makes the V1 nose looks small.  The rails are beefier, so yes, the volume is moved to the rails.  The deck area seams a bit bigger.  With the increased width, it is much more stable, especially in the rough, chop, and disorganized stuff.  I don't remember if there are bottom changes, maybe Mark discussed it in one of Evan's vids.

The lower rocker is obvious, and makes for more challenge keeping it from poking.  If you watch my vids, you'll see the nose poke quite a bit.  It's not as forgiving compared to the Bullet or F16V2 with the nose poking, but the board is very controllable and stable, which for me, is a major plus.  Because I'm comfortable on the board, I'm more relaxed, and able to focus on the water, steering, and my paddling.  I know some V2 former owners sold because they didn't like how the nose poked on the Hawaii Kai run.

The Bullet V1 is no sloth, it's still a great board and wish I could own both.  I think the V1 might be a bit quicker in some situations because of the more narrow profile, even with it's bigger rocker.  In a perfect world, I'd have one of each SIC board to be honest, and that's no exaggeration.

Great to hear about all the runs on the other islands.  The BI was in the local news for twisters around Kawaihai.  Looked gnarly.

You guys doing the west side of the BI have your cajones in place.  With this kind of wind, I'd be nervous as a cat over there.

Bill,
Since I'm from Hilo side, was good to be with JF808 and our other buddy who knows the wind lines really well.  Interesting how certain areas light up, and other areas can blow you off shore if you aren't careful.  When they took an inside line, so did I.  I think many take it too lightly, especially novice paddlers, and end up in trouble.

Thanks Bill,
During the first video, I was trying to keep people close.  It was hard because I had a friend behind me and one to the right.  Then there was the two to the left who stayed together, but they are more experienced than me so I had to play catch-up.

The second video was more about me enjoying the run and not have to worry about camera shot.  We don't get juicy stuff like this often, so when we get it, we gotta enjoy it.  Drove from Hilo to Puako, but so worth it!  We were all on a downwind high! Stoked and wanted to share!
