Thanks Covesurfer, just sharing the stoke!

hbsteve,
That is a Dakine impact vest. I wish I remembered the model name.  It has a sturdy zipper, velcro tabs, and two heavy duty buckles.  It's not a Coast Guard approved PFD so if you knockout, it probably won't float you head up.  It still gives me a lot of flotation though.  I wear it for a few reason.  First and the most obvious, if I lose my board to a broken leash, I'll have that extra flotation to make it to shore or atleast tread water till help arrives.  When conditions are really gnarly, I'm not 100% sure I could make the swim in unassisted especially if I'm already tired from paddling.  Second, the extra flotation saves me a lot of engery when I fall and have to get back up on my board.  And last, to protect me from impact.  If for some reason I fall at a weird angle and hit my torso, it will protect my ribs, and back.

A few of the local SUP surfers who aren't ashamed of wearing these, do so for safety reasons.  One drawback is that it gets hot in Hawaii weather.  If I don't fall and cool off, it gets blazing hot and by the time I am reaching the finish, I am unzipping and letting it flap, you can see that in one of the videos.

A couple years ago, I nearly drowned while shore fishing and getting swept off the cliff.  That near death experience has taught me to be a bit more cautious. It's a small price to pay for safety. I also have the inflatable waist packs.

The winds were up again on the West side of the Big Island.  The first run was from Puako boat ramp to Anaehoomalu Bay at Waikoloa.  The second run was from Puako boat ramp to 49 Black Sand Beach at Maunalani.

Covesurfer,
Thanks for sharing your video, looks like you got in some nice glides! What board are you using?

I can't imagine paddling in that cold conditions.  I was complaining this weekend because the impact vest I wear causes me to sweat more.  I paddled once in a wetsuit, but that's only because right before that I was spearfishing and was lazy to change.  Aloha!

Nice double rainbow shot.

My 2013 14x23.5" Ace should be here soon.

Thanks Argosi! The 25" is enough challenge for me in open ocean conditions.  Please post a review with pics when you get it!

Thanks PonoBill for sharing the videos.  It's really interesting to see the various downwind conditions.  I love watching the videos and practice reading the swells.  For some reason, it's always easier sitting at home watching on the computer but I do find the visual imagery helpful.

I loved how you rammed Headmount on the paddle out, is that how you drive your race cars?  ;D

The V2 is looking pretty stable.  I've found that it does less kicking and bucking compared to the V1.  With less balance checks, the legs stay more fresh, which is saved energy.  I've always wondered if Mark tested out the Bullet V1 with larger size fins and whether that may tame the wild horse a bit...for those who need it anyway.

That was great! How long is that run?

Jeremy,
The first run we did was about 4.6 miles, the second run shorter.  When the wind is right, the run can be further down the coast.  Maybe JF808 knows the distance to Waikoloa.

is J.riggs on a V2? how come Livio still rocks the V1 and not the V2?

Both V1.  There's a pic on J. Riggs webpage: http://paddlewithriggs.com/

I guess only Livio can answer why he's on a V1.  I know SICs FAQs says the V2 was more suited for heavy riders with it's higher volume and increased stability, something guys like Livio, Jeremy, Conor and the like don't need.

JF808 is so dedicated to the video. He would stop midway, pull out his headmount.  Stop, turn the fixed camera on the tail.  Then move it up front, just to get all the angles.  It makes for great video, but he sacrifices some of his paddle time.  I was too greedy and just stuck my GoPro to the tail, hit the switch and didn't touch it till the end of the run.  Maybe I'll just give him my SD card after the run the next time, haha!

I definitely have more appreciation for the work that any standup paddler does in putting together a video Headmount, DJ, J. Riggs, JF808...it's not easy stuff but very much appreciated.  Not many comment on the video, but by seeing the hits, many are lurking and watching.  Thanks to all you guys for sharing.

Fantastic.  My two favorite paddlers.  Loved the mount.  Only JR could keep up with Livio.  He's really good at this.  Red is such a great color for the cam to grab.  It loves red.

Yeah PBills jaw dropped when we picked up Livios' board.  I think he said 26 lbs.

Good work JR.

I think it was Mark who said Livio likes his board "ultra light" layup.  The amount I fall, that board would be a kite! I had the option of ordering my Bullet V2 in a lighter layup, I decided standard was light enough.

I've owned the Ace for over 6 months and it continues to live up to it's hype.  Took the board out this past Saturday and Sunday.  On Saturday, I switched from the Gladiator Hybrid fin, to the Allison Becker Keel fin.  The condtions were pretty brutal in the bay with disorganized chop coming from all angles.  The Becker fin had great tracking, but stability was less compared to the Gladiator Hybrid.  Switched out the fin for a Futures Large Cutaway, the green one and went out on Sunday.  Headwind was strong and again, very disorgainized swells with white caps.  As the Ace pounded through it, it was obvious that the large Futures fin slowed down the side to side roll.  Turning around with the wind and swell, we did a short downwinder, and the Ace was very controllable, catching the smallest of bumps and still able to manuever through the mess.  Still need more time in other conditions.  As with any big fin, I'm guessing there may be more drag than a smaller fin but in really rough conditions, I'm definitely much faster on the board, doing less balance checks versus struggling with balance with a smaller fin.  Cut my Wiki paddle to 8" overhead compared to 10" over, seems to work very well.

That was a great day!  Thanks JF808 for the great video!

SEA,
I love my Bullet V2. What really makes it more fun for me than my V1 is the stability and control. At times, the V1 use to feel a little out of control. With the V2, you have to step back to keep the nose from poking, but it's lower rocker line rewards with nice glides. Here in Hilo side, our conditions are rarely downwind, but I'll still take the V2 for a paddle.  If the 14' V2 is similar, it's going to be a great board.
