call tiago at mauka---his groups often surf by lisbon or even south of lisbon when wind's wrong in ereceira
closest ever to death in water at ereceira--completely my fault, got lucky---paddling out, i thought i could cut through the top three feet of a monster wave---not that monster wave! top 3 feet was thick and powerful, and threw me backwards over some powerful falls--then held me for a while--had i ditched and dove deep i would have been fine--bad move
i surfed by lisbon for 4/6 days, when at at mauka "retreat"
not sure if tiago can meet you in lisbon or what, but he's a really nice guy, who might be able to accomodate you, and would know anyone else who might be able
my surfing experience with him was great---he worked doggedly to get us two good sessions perday, and he drove us a lot to get that---along the way we ate great meals at local restaurants, and even tour the lisbon aquarium one day, btwn sessions
if there was a glitch, it was that the heat in his house was not great---but i tripped with tiago 2 yrs ago, and im sure he's got that ironed out
and like i said, the surfing end of the deal was excellent
Thanks a lot for your advice! I read about some of your nice experiences at Mauka retreat in other threads. That monster wave sounds intimidating. Thank God you survived it!

Dear Zoners,
I am spontaneously going to Lisbon, Portugal for a few days and looking for a SUP surfing course. Is there any place or instructor that you would recommend?
BTW, I read about Tiago's Mauka Lodge in other threads but 50 min drive from Lisbon is a bit too much for me.
Looking forward to your advice!
Best LP

Talked to Gerd at the PADDLEexpo. The Light teamriders did a head-to-head comparison of the GT and Signature 2.0 14x23 in 600m sprint and the speed difference was, according to Gerd, very marginal (nope I didn't question him about the soundness of the setup from a statistical point of view). Gerd himself was placed 3rd in a recent local 10km race with a prototype of the GT and found its performance time-wise comparable to his Signature 2.0 14x24.5 (he's 88kg and ca. 188cm). The GT is going to weigh the same as the Signature 2.0---9.5 kg for both. Gerd added that the GT is better at tracking but not as sensible as the Signature 2.0 that is better at buoy turns. It's arriving in Frankfurt in 10 days so I'm really looking forward to a demo.

Speed costs money mate, in any sport.
Indeed.
(or just wait for a 21.5 bargain 6 months from now when team paddlers are getting frustrated they still can't shift their old gear to allow them to have the new stuff -standard team ambassador deal clause).
Are team paddlers/ambassadors normally bound to upgrade their gear every year? Can't they stick with their gear for one more year if, say, they don't like the changes?

I would agree for us mortals. The reality is that the true elites don't find a 21.5 board energy sapping. For what it's worth, I'm splitting my time between SUp and surfski next year so will unlikely see enough time on a board that narrow to justify it so I'm likely to be going for something like the 23.5 Allstar (for the exact reason you gave in your post) and whatever I'm given to test.
Mind you, a fellow paddler of mine, who is around 190 cm and 90 kg, tried a 23.5 All Star (2019) and found it more tippy than his 23 Sprint (2019). The tail of the former is 1.4" narrower.

Once you are in a train and moving fast, a narrow board with a recessed deck should be quite stable, I would imagine?

WOW. Thanks Mr. Proper and Area 10. It's like the Annabel Anderson ISA drama all over again...
I could feel the sub-20 arms race going on now...

interesting result for the top women at the 11 city tour as seychelle won on the 23" wide board and others was on the 21" wide board came second.
Are you sure that it was a SIC RS 14x23? Many of SIC Maui team riders have been racing with 21.5" wide prototypes this year.

What is even more impressive for me: she won an inland race with a board which is advertised to suit all conditions. Rise of all-water boards?

I don't know how women can find that comfortable butt I'm glad they do.....
There're things that are never comfortable but many still stick to... say high heels?

A friend ordered one last week and will get it October / November 18.
I see. Seems to be currently out of stock in Europe.
Where you come from? Maybe it's worth it to ask here: https://www.supshop24-7.com (Michael Frosch)
Thanks for the tip. I contacted a local retailer near Munich.
