3m Naish Matador in 10-15 knots.. I’m 100kgs

Wow!!
That vid is gonna sell a lot of Naish gear.Incredible low end.

Whenever someone tells me they wing in 10-15kn on 3m my BS detector goes off.

Ha.. Fair comment.. I think the same when I hear about people foiling in 6-8 knots.

Getting up in light winds can vary on conditions regardless of wind strength.. Gusty off shore winds in flat water can often be easier than the same wind in a steady onshore direction.. To be perfectly honest about the day of that vid the wind was more in the 5-20 knots range with the wind being stronger out the back (further offshore) but where I was (closer in) the wind was more 0-15.. and the 15 knot gusts had some punch in them.. The wind soon dropped off even more and the combination of a small wing and a small foil wasn’t working great for me causing me to drop off the foil in the big wind holes.. My options were to either use a bigger foil to glide more through the holes or use a bigger wing which is what I did.. My small 3m is orange and at the end of that vid I was using 5m red Matador.. So there you go.. I was able to get up with my 3m in wind in the 10-15 knots but there is obviously slightly more to it than that.

To everyone:
I am so grateful that people are responding to my very basic questions.  I had an electric foil session today and I am so pumped! The guy who took me out had some Naish foils from ?2020 at a good price.  Carbon foils and aluminum mast and fuselage.  One was in the 2400 range, and one in the 1800 range.  Any thoughts about these as starter foils?  He also had a Naish SUP foil 135 L board- sorry, I don't know the other dimensions.  Considering these as a cheap entry into the world of wing foiling.

I so appreciate the advice!

I’m a little older and heavier than you and here is a vid that I made when I first started and I was using the big Naish 2450 foil.. It’s an awesome learning foil and I’ve seen many friends progress using this foil.. I was using the 75cm mast and that’s also  a great place to start regarding mast length.. and my board was the 125L Naish Hover.. I would not recommend the Naish 1800 foil as a starting or learning foil but it’s a great foil for down the track once you have learn to foil.. That Fanatic board that you mentioned would be a great board to start with in my opinion.. I’m also using the 5m Matador wing now and I love it.

I loved it.. I liked it so much I went and bought a 3m and hope to try it out tomorrow..

It's noticeable more powerful than the standard WingSurfer.. Bigger handles.. Smaller windows.. But I don't think it's a good wing for learners or the inexperienced..

I was using the 5m Matador in 15-25knots and it felt like a 6 or 7m in power at times.. I can use my normal S25 wing all day without feeling the need for a harness but after an hour or so with the Matador I was feeling the need for a harness.. It gets you up on the foil quicker for sure but I don't think the wind range or ease in gusts is as good..

This new wing is designed for use in the surf and downwinding where the idea is to get up on the foil quick and then let the wing float off the front handle as you surf waves or runners.. I'm guessing the smaller windows is to help make the wing stronger when falling and being dumped in the surf and if it spends most of the time floating off the front handle windows are not that nessesarry..

I found the windows worked well but you often have to move the wing slightly to see though them so learner or wingers that sail in crowded areas are much better off with the normal WingSurfer wing.. Safety wise..

I think the handle configuration is perfect.. I used the front handle when depowering and off the wind and second front when basting along and going up wind.. Same with the rear.. First when going off the wind and second going up wind.. A friend who has one is using a harness and often uses the very rear handle going upwind with the harness.. I don’t find the gap in the middle a problem but attaching a mini boom across the 2nd and 3rd would fix that issue for some..

I’ve been wanting one of these for ages and today I got what I wanted..

So different to the S25/26 wing.. So much more power.. Bigger handles.. and smaller windows.

Have you checked with were you bought it from?
Looks definitely like a warranty to me because I’ve seen many of these board and never seen anything like this happen.

Crocs work fine.. Not for surfing but good for casual flat water paddling in calm conditions.

How heavy are you?

70
I’m loving it.

It has early lift and good top end with no draggy feel that most big foils have.

I think you did the right thing and have nothing to worry about.. I’m thinking about buying a new 110 and I’ve decided to go with the GS if I do.. I like the grey deck pad rather than white and it’s a much more durable board and only slightly heavier.

I know both of these foils well and either will work well but I’d steer you towards the bigger 2000 because it will make learning easier.

I’m a big fan of the Naish foils and I have many friends using them with no issues or problems.. The only issue that I know of is the possibility to bend a mast but all brands of alloy masts can bend if crashed in a certain way.

I’d suggest getting the new composite Naish mast in the cheaper C35 construction (35% carbon and 65% fiberglass) if you are worried about having any mast issues.

The new Naish S26 range is very nice and their foils have come along way from just a few years ago.. Unfortunately most people who put down Naish foils are comparing the ones from a few years ago with new foils in other brands.

Awesome vid Clay.. Thanks.

The big Naish 2450 is the perfect foil for a big guy like you to learn with and wing size will depend on wind strength.. I’d say a 5-6m wing should work well in light winds and once the wind hits 20 knots a 4-4.5m will work for you..
btw the new Naish S26 wings have plenty of low end grunt..

I’m 6’3” and about 220 lbs and I’ve been using the new Naish S26 6.8m wing on light days.. This vid was from a few days ago.

Hey DavidJohn - great video. I have the same board and am about the same weight and height. What size foil did ride?

Thanks.. I’m using the Naish S25 HA1800.
