Travel, Trips, Destinations / SUP rental El Salvador?
« on: January 24, 2012, 02:43:32 PM »
Thinking of doing a quick trip to El Salvador. I have a SUP, but would like to just rent while I'm down there to maximize my flexibility.

SO, does anyone know where we can rent SUPs in El Salvador? (preferably with some advanced, shorter shapes?)

I guess what's not clear to me is, what can I not do, or what will I be able to do better, if I upgrade my fins?

So, I'm probably a beginner or intermediate in the SUP surf world. Ride my 8'5"x30 starboard 2011 Pocket Rocket in mostly head high stuff. Can do bottom turns, top turns, floaters, and cutbacks...nothing fancy.

that said, I'm using the stock plastic fins as a Quad.

all the really hard core guys seem to be very particular about their fins, but I have trouble understanding what exactly the difference will be if I try a new more expensive set. People talk about drive and control...what does that mean?

so, can someone explain to me why I should buy expensive fins? I have trouble imagining I'll be able to tell the difference.

Regional / Ocean Beach, SF Bay?
« on: January 03, 2012, 09:42:48 AM »
Just wondering if there's anyone on this forum that regularly hits Ocean Beach in SF on the smaller days? I've been out there twice on shoulder-head high and it's been pretty fun, but it'd be nice to have someone to go out with so we can keep an eye on each other. That, and it'd be great to get some more info on where to ride so I don't piss off any locals.

sorry for the noob question, but when the waves are this big, how do they paddle out? prone? knees? standing?

just curious how you get out past a break that size without the ability to duck-dive.

or...is this a point break?

SUP General / Re: attaching a board vertically to a roof rack?
« on: November 03, 2011, 09:44:27 AM »
After putting the board up on my rack, on its side, it's really high. A giant sail. I think it might make sense to do it with multiple boards, but with one it just doesn't look right.

I'm now considering fashioning some extensions to my yakima bars that would allow me to extend the bars a bit when needed and attach the board flat. Wouldn't be too hard, just need to get some round pipe that fits snugly over the standard round bars and weld on some nuts with thru-holes for set screws.

Anybody ever done something like that?

My rack is pretty solidly attached to the car, it attaches with screws into the roofof the car (i.e. not the door frame clip style). The board fits in the car fine, but means I can't have passengers...

Gear Talk / stock fins on 2011 starboard pocket rocket?
« on: November 03, 2011, 09:38:36 AM »
Hey, what are the stock fins on the 2011 pocket rocket? Are they all just plastic or are two of them hexcel, two of them plastic?

Any thoughts on the quality of those fins? are they good enough or should I be looking to upgrade?

Thanks!

SUP General / attaching a board vertically to a roof rack?

So, I've got a Thule cargo box on my rack. I don't really want to take it off, but also want to be able to carry my SUP on top. My crossbars aren't long enough to have both the cargo box and the SUP side by side.

According to this link: http://stokemagazine.blogspot.com/2011/05/tying-sup-to-your-car-rack.html

which is this: http://www.shop.kayakcitys.com/images/1303779411986-1875638510.jpeg

he suggests using the yakima kayak stackers to attach a sup vertically (in other words, not lying flat on the rails, but resting on its side). Has anyone done this? Seems a bit sketchy as that's an awfully big thing to have up there in the wind, but I guess a kayak isn't any smaller really.

Thoughts?
