SUP General / Re: Battle of the Paddle now and then... Eight years later.
« on: October 10, 2018, 09:00:45 PM »
The Open tech final with 10:27 winning time was only one lap on the pro course. The main open race beforehand was two laps on a different course set with top times in the 24:00 range. So not so short, just about the right distance.

Now I see.  The one I saw was the Open Technical Surf Race.  Though they do have it listed in the results as 2 miles sounds like it was just 1.  Guessing the distance course wasn't a full 6 miles either - unless paddlers have gotten a lot faster :)

I'm confused. Are you saying there was an Open Technical Race and also an Open Technical Surf Race?

What's the difference?

I thought a Technical Race was just the stupid ISA term for a BoP style race, ie a Surf Race, but allowing for the possibility of no surf. (So the ISA can hold their events on a lake or in an Olympic city with no surf nearby.)

Starboard has found a way to use the "stored energy" from the flex in an inflatable board. And here's me thinking that flex was a bad thing.

Predictably, to anyone but a media stock analyst, TSLA is up 17.35% today, up 45 bucks a share. The SEC was uncharacteristically gentle. I guess they're rooting for Elon too. It seems strange to me that he has so many detractors. I don't expect human perfection, but I love seeing big ideas, big effort, and his willingness to take responsibility--and his fundamental brilliance. People I know who've worked for him have varied assessments of his management style and ability, but no difference of opinion on his commitment.

Yes one of the common complaints from those who have worked for him is along the lines that if you are not prepared to sleep under your desk, then you shouldn't expect to have a desk the next morning. And if you aren't prepared to work back late on Saturday night, then don't bother coming to work on Sunday morning.

Downwind and Racing / Re: PPG Women's vs Men's Board Sizes

Seems to be a lot of middle aged male outrage over this latest setback to women's rights. Has anyone checked with the pro women to find out what board length they want at this event? Is it possible that PPG did this and arrived at 12'6" as a consensus?

I would say the 14' Bayonet is the most comfortable 14' board I've ever attempted to surf.
Hi PT, hope you are having a good winter, with lots of DW. I’ve got two Qs for you. First, is the Bayonet a significantly better surfer than the Bullet 14V2? Cos the V2 is a fairly decent surfer, although not in the M14 category of excellence (and the M14 is nowhere as good as a Grey Paddleboards custom 14 DW board).

The second question is whether DJ is gonna sell his current Naish-yellow car and get a new one now that Naish have gone with a kinda knickerbocker glory colour scheme for 2019? :) :)

I haven't surfed the V2 Bullet but I just got my hands on a second hand one with steering. I suspect the steering tiller position will actually make surfing a little awkward but when I get a chance to take it out on waves, I'll let you know how it compares to the Bayonet.

We had a record Winter for windy days apparently but it was quite cruel in that all but two of the windy days occurred during the work week. It was like clockwork - as soon as the weekend came around, the wind stopped.

I'm not sure if DJ is planning to order a Paddle Pop coloured car or if people in the UK and USA even know what a Paddle Pop is  but it looks a lot like the new Naish colour scheme.

Wow - that's a lovely wave for surfing a board like that. Great vid, thanks for sharing.

Does this signal the end of seeing videos where you are downwinding Starboards?

Would love to have a Bayonet if I didn't already have two 16ft full-on DW boards.

I hope BIC look after the SIC brand because Mark R created a brand that really appeals to enthusiasts like me (unlike BIC, I'm afraid).

Yes it's true, no more Starboard downwind or race boards for me. I still have a couple of their wave boards.

Don't tell me you let go of teh Ace-GT  :o :'(

Ace GT belongs to a friend now. I was just helping him with some running repairs on the weekend.

Not sure exactly how you would define BIC looking after the SIC brand but I hope they don't feel the compulsion to change the boards every year as the appeal to me is Raaphorst getting a design right and then sticking with it. I've never understood how SUP brands are not punished by market forces the way car companies are for undermining resale value.

Wow- those are some long rides! I wish I had a break like that where I live.

Longest wave of the day was 262 metres / 59 seconds. I only included part of it in the video as it didn't look all that exciting and I was milking it for distance. The wave peters out and then reforms again but the long boards can link them.

Getting in a little downwind practice for when the wind eventually returns.

I predict foilboards. Foilboards for everyone!

I Chapter 11. Chapter 11 for every manufacturer, distributor or retailer who over commits to the extremely niche market of SUP Foil.

I have nothing but admiration and respect for the pioneers and all those giving foiling a go. But the copycats and johnny come latelys chasing the next big thing or worse, the next fastest growing water sport who think they can make a fast buck out of selling foils... no sympathy when they go broke.

Further to A10's comments, the best part about DW'ing with an unlimited board is steering. An inflatable board at 17'4" would obviously not have steering. That would make it a handful with dodgy, soft rails and an inclination for the nose to stick to the water. There is basically no way of directing the board when on a wave.

"Only the national surfing federation has the right to organise a stand up paddle event" is a very scary precedent given that most surfing federations run one event a year at best and many of them don't seem to do a particularly good job at that. All the best SUP events all around the world are run by organisers who are not endorsed by or affiliated with a national surfing federation. Leave the running of all SUP events to national surfing federations and we might as well lock up and roll down the shutters for good.

SUP General / Re: Battle for control of the sport of SUP
« on: August 07, 2018, 09:08:02 PM »

Our priority has always been the athletes, and this remains the case. The ICF is also still willing to seek a compromise with ISA.

“One option the ICF remains happy to consider is to grant ISA control over all ocean SUP, while the ICF would govern inland flatwater SUP,” ICF President Jose Perurena said.

The irony of this compromise offer is that the proposed Portuguese event run by a canoe association promised far better ocean conditions than a number of the SUP world titles run by a surfing association. Of course, that's a given when the surf association marginalises SUP events to the extent that a surf race is run on an in-land lake.

The other irony is that so many SUP people are so desperate to be associated with surfing and surfers, who regard SUP like red-headed step children. On the other hand, SUP people don't want to be associated with canoeing, yet canoeing people are welcoming SUP with open arms.

It all reminds me of the Groucho Marx line about not wanting to belong to a club that would have me as a member.

Sorry if i offended anyone with my simplistic analysis but the name of our sport includes " board" and does not include "canoe"....  fact

So... is the parent sport known as surfboarding? I've never heard it called that.

Okay, that's a little facetious, sorry, but I do think someone stuffed up badly with the name SUP or stand up paddleboarding all those years ago. They should have called it paddle surfing. It would have been more marketable and we would possibly not be in the middle of this pissing contest now.
