Foil SUP / Re: Efoil Vibe
« on: November 23, 2020, 10:40:17 PM »
Not really a fan. Don’t see the need for them if you can foil waves with your own power. Maybe to cruise the shoulders on the outer reefs but not my thing. Some people think they will tow people in on them but a jet ski seems like a better option.IMHO I have heard of some EFOIL riders at  makena landing riding back and forth. Owners or rentals? I don’t know but many of us who Downwind foil have concerns that some snorkeler will be injured or worse and ruin it for the rest of us who Foil. We all agree to come down off foil well before the beach to keep it safe for everyone. My 2c.

Kip, looks like you have some great boards there. My suggestion is, don’t start foiling or you will never ride them again. I have a garage full of sups (some for racing and some for surfing) and surfboards that are now collecting dust since I started foiling. “ Foil brain “ is real and once you have it nothing is as much fun!😬

Beasho If you make it here to Maui you can try a Maliko. 10 miles of smiles with no crowds. EVER

I made this one a couple years ago with aluminum plates on top and bottom. I rode it but felt too flexy for me. I suppose I could revisit it and use either longer aluminum plates or make out of carbon. I can get the aluminum free but the carbon will co$t money and defeat the purpose of making a foil board on a budget.

I went down this rabbit hole back when In 2018 when I was kitefoiling. I used this sushi board that wasn’t be used in my garage. I put and aluminum plate on the top and one on the bottom. Bolted my foil plate through both plates and board. I used it kite foiling but it was a little flexy for my taste. I may revisit this board as a prone foilboard. Will need to make a longer aluminum plate to help with the board flex. Carbon would be better but not in my budget. I have pics. But unable to resize them at the moment.

Foil SUP / Early Days & Thoughts On Foiling
« on: January 27, 2020, 10:50:18 PM »
I’ve been out of the water for a couple of weeks due to some back issues. It’s tough to watch some amazing wind and waves and not be out there in the water enjoying them. Sup surf and downwind for many years now and then came foiling. Bam! I haven’t been on any board without a foil for almost two years now. They are all collecting dust in the garage.
So whilst killing time out of the water I came across this article on foiling which is from 2001.

I particularly found the quotes from DK. interesting. The first was when he first road the bumps after exiting a wave and continued on for a few hundreds yards and then realized that anything is possible. The second one was when he mentions the possibility of riding swells between the islands. I remember hearing Laird say something similar somewhere. All of this has happened! With record times to boot.
And then there is this inspirational video of Kai from 3 years ago. In it he states something like always been a dream to fly. That did it for me! I’ve been on the same mission only a couple years late and decades older the Kai.I wish more people could enjoy the thrill of flying above the swell for miles and miles at a time. It’s never crowded on downwinders🤙

I think I spotted the Golden God today in Kihei. I was meeting Kathy for a downwind foil run today. I was early to the start and was checking the wind when I saw a wing dinger flying across Maalaea Bay. I figured it was you Bill as you mentioned you had been flying there as of late. Looked like you were doing really well. I thought maybe you would head downwind if you saw I us paddling but realized you might have finished for the day. Wind was good till we were about a mile away from the mana Kai where It died. Limped in and called for a early pickup from my wife who was waiting for us at andaz. As soon as she showed up the wind cranked up again and made us want to do another run. Tomorrow is another day...

Nah Bill! Your looking at it all wrong. As we get older it gives us the opportunity to relearn things that we’ve mastered for years. (Sometimes on a daily basis) Kinda like the movie Groundhog Day with Bill Murray. ;)
Hell, the challenge of getting there is still most of the fun. After that we get bored and move on. Today’s wind promises to be about the same as yesterday. Keep rockin! 🤙

Holy she-ot! Is this what people are willing to pay for these?
On another note, the wing carnage has begun on the north shore. A friend who I kite with saw at least 4 wings that got trashed in the surf the other day. Kiters pulled the guys to shore. There will definitely be a few more as people figure out what you can and cannot do with these wings. Winters coming!😎

Can't blame Bill if he's heading back to Maui. It's warm and windy here today and surf too!

Yep, been using these for years and very pleased with their performance. Great for trips to the beach but most importantly trips to Costco. Can put the milk and meats and even ice cream in it and stays cold till we get home to refrigerate.
