SUP General / Re: Why the zone has gone south

Crossing the chasm, wow that brings back memories.

I am definitely a late adopter, probably a laggard.  I made fun of my friends who were early adopters, now 10 years later i am learning from them.  I picked up stand up as a means to stay active on the water and stumbled across the Zone.  the zone has been essential to my learning curve for SUS and now for foiling.  I am so stoked that my water crafts have expanded to cover more conditions, get me on the water more and more as i get older too.  Plus I have made some friends from here too.  The Zone is awesome.  It will probably be for the core consumer and the late adopters.

I saw this board and rider in action yesterday.  Recognized the board and the rider was wearing an AZ Cardinals tshirt.  Had to be Evan.  Nice to chat with you out there.  Your foiling is getting really good, especially given you started in June and live in AZ!!  Hope my progress can come close to yours and i live locally.

Look forward to seeing you out there again.

Sano,
He makes it look so easy.  Got out this morning, mid 50s air temp and stiff offshores, chilly.  I did attempt the technique felt like it was kind of working but the hi tide and offshores kept blocking me from getting in.  I may try to sneak into Sano at dawn tomorrow to give it another go.  Let me know if you are going down.  thanks!

Robert, thanks for the explanation, I think I get it.

I will try this out tomorrow, swell has dropped off so hopefully this technique will help with the fading swell.  Thanks again!!

Robert and Sam, awesome video series, i am learning a lot.

Newb here with around 10 sessions under my belt.  I am starting to feel comfortable paddling for the wave and catching it.  One thing i just noticed in the second video, both you and Sam mentioned weighting and unweighting the foil when paddling for the wave and then engaging the foil.  When I am catching the wave, it feels as if the foil is engaging as I am dropping down the wave face.

Can you elaborate more on the weighting/unweighting part when paddling for a wave?  Will this help me to catch waves earlier?

Thanks!!

Surfercook

Thanks for the posting that article:
bi·tu·men- a black viscous mixture of hydrocarbons obtained naturally or as a residue from petroleum distillation. It is used for road surfacing and roofing.

I work in the surf industry and have been trying to find a good way to recycle wetsuits.  this gives me something to think about.  Know of any crumbing facilities in the US?

« on: September 24, 2018, 11:17:52 AM »
thanks for everyone's perspective and suggestions.  I have been lifting since i was a kid so kind of hard to not incorporate that into my weekly activities.  I do need to incorporate some variations into my regime.  My 24hr fitness gym has yoga on a couple of days so may try to incorporate that.  Maybe less powerlifting stuff.  And more stretching, especially those sitting muscles.  I discovered a bunch of stretches some new some old for the psoas muscle.

Sano, maybe i can meet you for that script down by the hut/volleyball courts on Friday.  I am taking the day off so hopefully will get down there with my new rig.

Training, Diet, and Fitness / Over doing it

So I was curious of others thoughts/experiences here.

I am in my early 50s, very active on both land and water.  I have had some back issues over the years, not disc issues or anything but spine alignment, tightness in lower back.  Have implemented daily stretches to mitigate any issues.  I have an hour commute each way for work, plus a desk job 8-10 hours..so a lot of sitting.  I sit on a swiss ball too.

Anyway, in the last run of south swells, i surfed around 5 days in a row.  Threw in there some deadlift workouts and some manual labor work in the yard.  My lower back stiffened up for the last 5 days which incapacitated me so no surf etc.  My buddy who is the same age said that i over did it, shouldnt surf that many days in a row at our age.

Wanted to know if you guys have any program to breakup your successive days of surfing or working out.  Do you take days off, etc.  Yoga (ugh), etc

thanks for your wisdom here guys.

RAT and SANO,  wish i could join you guys.  I am technically only on my third session, but tweaked my back earlier this week so may need to nurse it for a few days.

Robert,
thanks for the video.  I especially like the last part about  how to get the foil into your Prius.  I am just starting out but have been challenged with getting all the gear into a Prius.  This gives me a new angle to pack it all in there.  thanks.

Foil SUP / Re: Video: Installing an arch bar on your foil SUP
« on: September 10, 2018, 09:26:01 AM »
thanks guys, your instructions helped a lot.  Hardest part was removing the adhesive.  I probably only got off around 80% of the stuff, still some around the edges.  A lot of acetone and elbow grease.  Pretty happy with the end result, it is so easy now to know where my back foot is.

Hey EL

This is so timely as I was about to put a rear traction pad on mine.  Couple quick questions.

Did you drill any holes in the center bar? Standard drill bit will do?

I am also going to put the back piece on.  From a location perspective, should the back piece be immediately behind the last screw, or an inch or so past?

Thanks!
