Gear Talk / Footstraps for foil board
« on: March 18, 2019, 09:15:03 PM »
Dont want to start up a debate on footstraps or no footstraps, just wanted to know what brand the foil folks were using.  My current one is starting to fall apart and rub my foot raw (could be technique when i am in a rush to ram my foot in the straps for a late takeoff).

Any recommendations?  thanks.

Foil SUP / Mast loosening while up and gliding
« on: January 08, 2019, 09:37:06 AM »
So i have been at this for a few months so this could be user error.  I have a tuttle mast / mount in a JL hovercraft.  On a few occasions while up and gliding I hear a distinct crack coming from the board.  The first time i checked to make sure everything was ok and no damage.  The only thing i noticed was the screws were loose compared to when i assembled things.  It happened again this morning on a bigger wave, more so unnerved me, not sure if that changed the foil angle but seemed to be harder to get on foil again after it happened.

Question: when you guys are assembling your board and mast, are you tightening the crap out of it?  Or are you tightening it and then shifting the mast around and then tightening again.  Just wonder if there is a technique or tip to lock it in.  Or is there a chance the tuttle box has loosened?

thanks for the input.

Training, Diet, and Fitness / Over doing it
« on: September 23, 2018, 08:53:26 AM »
So I was curious of others thoughts/experiences here.

I am in my early 50s, very active on both land and water.  I have had some back issues over the years, not disc issues or anything but spine alignment, tightness in lower back.  Have implemented daily stretches to mitigate any issues.  I have an hour commute each way for work, plus a desk job 8-10 hours..so a lot of sitting.  I sit on a swiss ball too.

Anyway, in the last run of south swells, i surfed around 5 days in a row.  Threw in there some deadlift workouts and some manual labor work in the yard.  My lower back stiffened up for the last 5 days which incapacitated me so no surf etc.  My buddy who is the same age said that i over did it, shouldnt surf that many days in a row at our age.

Wanted to know if you guys have any program to breakup your successive days of surfing or working out.  Do you take days off, etc.  Yoga (ugh), etc

thanks for your wisdom here guys.

Foil SUP / Tuttle Box install in South OC or North SD
« on: July 13, 2018, 09:11:07 AM »
Hey any recommendations for anybody that can install a Tuttle Box and fix some delam.  After riding my new to me (used) L41 simsup, I found the deck with some water sloshing around under the glass.  Figured this board is going to be dry docked for a while to fix the delam and to get the box installed.

let me know if you have any recommendations.  I work in HB but live in San Clemente, so could take it somewhere pretty much in OC.  thanks.

Foil SUP / Dedicated Foil Board vs 2 in 1 board
« on: June 27, 2018, 09:27:32 AM »
Just getting going in foiling and obviously overthinking my equipment.  Curious to know from the experienced guys what board you used to start off on or maybe are still on.

Are you riding a dedicated foil board or using a converted sup (added tuttle box or plate adapter).  Economically thinking it seams that a converted sup (maybe one of the simsups) would be great to get started on, plenty of volume and could sup surf if conditions warrant.  And with more experience, maybe later invest in a dedicated foil board.

Curious what you guys are riding or started off on.  Just trying to speed up my learning curve and increase my stoke level.  thanks!

Foil SUP / And so my new journey begins
« on: June 14, 2018, 09:12:39 AM »
After some prompting from a friend in Maui and talking to folks on here and around some local spots, I decided to pull the trigger.  The below was awaiting for me when i got home from work.  Lot of hardware.  There are some excellent posts, videos and members on this forum to get going.  Not sure if I am excited or scared to get started.  Evan's video got me motivated to move tho.  My impact vest is coming tomorrow.

Will post up my progress.

Technique / Turning for incoming wave
« on: May 29, 2018, 12:41:52 PM »
Newbie here.  Have been trying to learn how to sup surf.  Have surfed most of my life.  Now in my 50s and with a plate in my neck (fused vertebrates), have neck stiffness after multiple days of prone paddling surfing, decided that stand up is my best long term option to maintain my passion for water sports.

this forum has been a huge wealth of tips.  One area that i still struggle with is turning the board around for incoming waves.  Sometimes i end up over turning or under turning the board.  Either way, i miss the wave.  Just wondering if there were any tips or suggestions.

Thanks in advance.
