SUP General / Re: Wing Board
« on: September 30, 2014, 08:27:37 AM »

I'm working out the final details of a combination wing suit, human cannon ball launcher; just don't know where to put the net...

Something like this?

Are the PSH quads still available? I always had good luck with them on a Cireban Fusion and I'm your size - little bigger in fact.

I got the FCS one - part coil, part straight. Disliked it at first but it's loosened up and it's not noticeable now. At first it twisted up but not much now- at the end of each session as I'm getting out I take it off my ankle, hold on to the cuff, and let the whitewater take the board - that gets the twists out.

I like it Creek!

I feel I do know my place - I surf the B breaks and not even in the crowd at that.

What bugs me are the guys that talk smack and dole out stink eye at the B breaks.

Next time I get grief for just having a paddle at my B break -  tell them to let it go and maybe they'd be happier surfing an A break...

SUP General / Re: Paddle - Switching Hands
« on: September 24, 2014, 08:51:22 AM »
More time in the water will help, even practicing on flat water at the same intensity level as if you were surfing. I raise the paddle up with my lower hand (& bring it to the center of the board) while dropping/sliding my top hand, place that top hand just below the bottom hand, and slide then top hand up to the handle.

Also look at why you're switching if it's a lot - try to drop in a little later if you're trying to catch it from too far out. Or look up some of Colas' old posts (here or on the Seabreeze or SUP Zero forums)oin how to paddle short SUPs.

While bunch of "Tomo" style boards in San Diego - Dave Craig has been pumping them out for Mitch (Mitch's Surf Shop).  I haven't tried one yet because only the little guys have bought any where I surf...

Jerks are jerks whether in the water, on the road, in the bleachers at their kids' games, etc. I try to be respectful and be the first to apologize when I'm at fault but I don't think there's any point trying to convince them that all SUPrs aren't kooks. They've made up their minds so I just ignore them. It must be exhausting to be angry all the time...

Welcome to try my SIMSUP ST (8'4x31x4.5 136L) but you'd have to meet me during the week at La Jolla Shores...

Gear Talk / Re: Step Down Rails? Good or bad
« on: September 22, 2014, 07:23:04 PM »
Definitely good on my SIMSUP ST.  Before this I had an S4 with chined rails. To me chined vs step is a matter of preference - I personally like step because they're more stable while waiting between sets and I didn't notice a big performance difference.  The chined had a tippy feel - lots of fun once on the wave but exhausting between sets. Both are definitely better than conventional boxy rails IMO.

Technique / Re: Turtle Rolling an SUP Board
« on: September 20, 2014, 10:14:49 AM »
Ive tried to turtle and can't make it work - board is too floaty and managing the paddle further complicates it. It could be me though. I usually paddle out prone with the paddle blade under my chest and the handling sticking out and up to the front. My timing has become much better so I go between the sets - self preservation...

Gear Talk / Re: Deck Pad & Tail Pad for a SIMSUP?
« on: September 17, 2014, 09:38:48 AM »

Another user suggested the Von Sol Big Square Pad to me but I have been unable to confirm the dimensions with VS.  I inquired on their FB page and the corporate website, no response.  With 3 pieces it looks like it would fit a wide tail SIMSUP nicely with 1/2"-1" space between each piece.

Try calling Surf Ride in Solana Beach - they had one in stick when I picked my fish pad up...

Craigslist is your friend.  Be patient with cash in hand for the right deal, they do pop up.  You can use  searchtempest to search all of craigslist in your area at once which really helps.  Some places sell used rental boards cheap too.  Some are good and some are not so you have to know what you are looking for.

+1; especially in San Diego.

Gear Talk / Deck Pad & Tail Pad for a SIMSUP?
« on: September 16, 2014, 02:05:59 PM »
Personally I find Hydroturf more comfortable and plenty grippy but it absorbs some water. Seadek (aka Xtrak) is even grippier and absorbs less water but it's too thin - it isn't long before my feet are killing me (I've got arthritis). The new FCS pad and OAM also get good reviews.

Gear Talk / Re: Infinity "Boardworks" Phoenix Cut sheet
« on: September 14, 2014, 01:31:12 PM »

I'm interested to see how what fin changes you make and how you like them.

Back foot placement is critical for snappy turns especially with the wider tail.  Having a tail kick would help a lot in this regard for me.  Sometimes my back foot is just not far enough back to the corner and my cutbacks suffer.  Do you have a tail kick that can be installed in the space behind the existing pad or an extra wide tail pad with kick that would be appropriate for the wide tail?

I run a kick pad on my L41 so I know where I'm at - it's pricy but I like the Von Sol brand. This one looks right for the Phoenix.

SUP General / Re: volume length float
« on: September 13, 2014, 02:47:46 PM »
I love my SIMSUP ST - search for my review on another post. I'm 230 lbs and very comfortable on it and it's 8'4x31x4.5 @ 136L. I've found I like the volume on my every day/all-conditions SIMs to be 30% more than my bare weight (in kg). So at 240 lbs you're looking at 142L (maybe a bit more to factor in heavier wetsuits). I don't think my balance is great but I have been SUPn a few years so I consider myself intermediate; I highly recommend trying a SIM style board at this volume first before you commit to a purchase since it's a pretty significant size drop (I assume) and an expensive mistake (unless you get a good enough deal used them I say go for it!).

I'm also a big fan of Blair's but like my SIMSUP better. Also wanting to try a Hammer (but none to demo in San Diego).
