Simsup Popdart ride report

Finally my initial ride report on the Popdart; I'm 6'1" 225 lbs naked (give or take) and have been SUP surfing 8 yrs now I think (can't remember how long!).

My two boards:

L41 SIMSUP ST bought June 2014
8'4" x 31" x 4 1/2" @ 136L
21.2 lbs with pad, leash, monster, and fins

L41 SIMSUP Popdart bought Oct 2015
8'2" x 31" x 4 1/2" @ 132L
18.0 lbs with pad, leash, monster, and fins

The Pd to me is the S4 nose, newer S5 grooved tail, and the ST rails.  The nose is pulled in more on the Pd but tail width is about the same at a glance. The ST has the deep V whereas the Pd is a double diamond with the grooves on the bottom. The rocker looks very similar to me and the ST seems to have a more pronounced belly nose.   I'm sure there are other differences that the trained eye could point out.

First couple of sessions were in mediocre (at best) conditions: calf to knee high, weak surf, windy and choppy. Stability was slightly less than the ST but plenty stable.  I felt the Pd wasn't made for these conditions - the ST would have been more fun but given the conditions nothing would have been a lot of fun.

The 3rd session was much better - chest high (or a bit bigger at times) at Tourmoline. The Pd needs more wave!!  Fast, loose yet not out of control, and easy to carve. The Pd didn't feel like a small skateboard on a steep hill like my S4.  I didn't feel like it took that extra half step to get back on the tail like with the ST. Maybe the narrower nose keeps me back more on the board?   It's also nice that I have the 5th box - gives me the option to add a trailer if I feel the need for more control. The Pd was loads of fun in these conditions!

I still love my ST and if I could only have one i would choose it - it's more of an all around board and just tons of fun.  The Pd is higher performance and a ton of fun if the waves are more substantial. I still need more time with the Pd to unlock its potential but it's definitely a keeper!

Awesome! I've been "tomo-shopping" for a few months. Waiting to hear about the latest design tweeks to pull the trigger.
What are your stats? And, why do you say it's a hybrid?
Also, if you don't mind, what is Kirk charging for it.
Can't wait for the review....

I'm 6'1" 220~230 lbs. price varies depending on what you have done (eg extra for carbon rails and color). The price list is accurate on his website and shipping was $200. It's a hybrid in my mind because it's an S4 nose, ST step rails, and S5 tail...

The real RSPro is definitely the easiest to install.  I just did some the other day; I cleaned the board and wiped it down with alcohol.  Let it dry, then wet my hands with a solution of baby shampoo, alcohol, and water (i kept my hands wet throughout).  I taped on end and worked my way back; pressed the center down over a foot long section then used a blue squeegee (like they use to apply body protection paint to cars).  I wiped with the squeegee from the center up to push the air out.  Repeated the process from the center down.  Then I set another foot long section and repeated...

interesting...top looks like ST, bottom looks like S5. do you have an ST already? what are the benefits of this design? maybe that cannot be answered till you get it! anyway, please let us know when you do.

I have an 8'4"x31"x4.5" ST and I love it. Loose, fast, stable, and it handles small and large waves equally well. I had an S4 before and it got way out of control at head-high and above waves. It was probably my lack of skill but I don't have any problem with the ST.  Plus at the time I thought I wanted a good-conditions board (which is what Kirk made me) but in hindsight I realized I want my boards to work in all conditions.

The ST spoiled me so much that I hated to surf my conventionally shaped 8'11" Craig so I sold it. Since I try to keep two boards (to allow for the inevitable repair) I needed another. Nothing used caught my eye so I reached out to Kirk. He says this style is loose and lively and the channels/tail design work together to control the width. He's been spot on for the last two boards so I don't doubt his judgment. I'll post a review in a couple months once I get the new ride.

Placed an order for a new board today - a blown up version of this one (S5 ST hybrid). Thinking I'll go with a University of KY blue on the nose fading to white...  8'2" x 31" x 4 1/2" @ 132L

I'm 218 lbs and my 8'4x136L ST and it has enough float and been plenty stable for me.  Plus I was 235 lbs when I bought it and my opinion was the same then; if anything I'll go a little smaller next time (maybe at or just under 8' and around 127L) .  I don't think I have great balance either.  This is by far the best board I've ever had; each time I take it out I'm amazed at what it can do.  It's fun in the small stuff and doesn't get squirrelly in the larger waves (head high is the most I've been in lately in San Diego).  It's fast, turns as long as you get on the tail, stable, did I say fast?, and generally just a ton of fun.  I haven't surfed my 8'11" Craig since I got this because it works in all conditions for me.

Gear Talk / Re: Would you have a Prone Shaper shape you an SUP?
« on: October 22, 2014, 07:38:55 PM »

I've gone round and around talking to a local shaper about how I "would" want my Sup to be shaped. He just doesn't believe in shaping a stand-up that's only 24" wide.

So I took out his 8'0"x24" 'BIG GUY' surfboard just to prove that it works as a stand-up board.

After his disbelief was taken care of, we decided to fine tune what the specs should be.

I think shapers might come off as being insulted when you try and tell them how you (cash-in-hand buyer) want your board to come out like...and that may be just because they haven't shaped many boards that are off the normal template.

I still haven't gotten that board shaped, because I'm just afraid that he won't make it exactly how I want. Oh well… The search continues.

I'm guessing it's Joe B?  I do like his boards but he can be set in his ways...

Cardiff - your ex-gf's boyfriend was pissy with you. That really shouldn't surprise you...  :-)

Sweet board!  Let us know how it rides.

I really like the way Kirk shapes the bottom making the mid section flat.  That flat bottom really adds to stability.  Kirk puts a ton of shaping enhancements into these Simsups! After riding the S4 for 6 months I feel sort of spoiled and addicted to the speed.  No other board can touch the speed or cutback ability of the S4 that I've recently tried.  Having said that I don't like the Simsups in large waves…too bouncy.  But for 75% of the surfing I do the Simsup is the call.  Have fun with it!

I thought the same thing on my S4 - but the ST holds better in the bigger stuff. It's not as fast as the S4 but the compromise is worth it overall...

Here's a great shot of Boludo on his ST (which you might have already seen). He went with a Von Sol Big Square tail pad and an FCS Dimple deck pad.

I don't think it's an ST - I think it's one of Kirk's boogie boards...  :-)

I put the Von Sol fish pad on my L41 SIMSUP ST (search my posts and there's pics).

Sessions / Re: San O Saturday - and why longboarders hate us
« on: October 06, 2014, 07:14:16 PM »

There was a longboarder out at DP the other day giving SUPers crap. He told a lady she was like "a piece of trash floating on the inside". She gave him a real tongue lashing. He looked like he wanted to crawl into a hole after that. 50+ SUPs out today.

That was Sup Surf Chick (wife).....
Lets just say I doubt he will do that again. After I got done with him she came over and continued on him.

Sounds like you too better be on good behavior sup surf-tw...  :-)

Definitely sounds like this guy didn't get it. Also I've surfed San O a few times for dawn patrols and it seems like it's accepted that it's more of a party wave spot - I've seen experienced SUP surfers and butt boarders all taking off simultaneously and not backing out to the one(s) with rights to the wave...

Gear Talk / Re: HELP about my new PURCHASE
« on: October 03, 2014, 04:37:05 PM »
I had a Fusion for a while. It was ok but I never got used to the domed deck. It was best with a set of PSH quads. It could've been just my board but I also never could get the deck pad cleaned - slippery spots. After I moved on to my Craig and L41s I realized it was a bit sluggish. I too thought it corky and I'm 230 lbs.
