Geez, you had me going at "the tables have turned". I was ready to join the movement, print some leaflets, buy the T shirt, irritate people outside shopping malls with petitions. And now you say you were just kidding?!?

Gear Talk / Re: River SUP Board Recommedations

I'm looking at the Stride's, ULI's and the cheap ones like the Seyvlor. Stride makes boards expressly for rivers.

Inflatables work surprisingly well everywhere. They surf OK, paddle flatwater OK and work in rapids. The more serious guys are using hard boards quite a bit in rapids, but they get trashed fast. Dan Gavere had a wide starboard last sunday on the White salmon but it looked like it had fallen off onto the freeway a time or two. Ding patches everywhere and a nose repair done with shoe goo.  Took the fin out about halfway down, and Dan goes fin-first (with the fin lifted out of the water) through the nasty sections. For me it's gunna be inflatables.

Sure it's false advertising, but that's an oxymoron. I used to tell people who asked me what I did that I lie about other people's products for money. Happens all the time, in fact it's rare that it DOESN'T happen. There isn't a single popular car race that actually uses cars that have anything to do with the sponsors products. NASCAR is the best example. Chevvy, Ford, Toyota? Hardly.

Bicycle companies plaster their names over racing bikes that are totally custom or built by specialist companies. Mark builds racing boards one at a time. He will probably never produce boards in quantities that satisfy the demand he's generating with the success of his designs, so he doesn't care much as long as Yolo buys the boards and doesn't obscure the SIC logo.

Every board Laird rides has an Oxbow logo on it. How many are built by oxbow? My guess is zero.

The inference is that Yolo digs performance and is putting some of their race experience into the boards they build.

Technique / Re: Arches on feet killing me???

Plantar Fascitis. Try some arch supports in your regular shoes, do some foot stretches before you get on the board (raising onto your toes, flat foot stretch, etc.) and Ibuprofen. Every geezer knows this charming problem. Sometimes I can't walk down the stairs. Stretches help the most

For a bicycle a Mule works great. For a motorcycle you want something more like this:

If the enviromentalists of San Diego ever caught you driving on the beaches they'd hang you from your paddle shaft. ;D

Beach driving is a proud tradition here in Oreygun. Has a little to do with dory launching and a lot to do with a low coastal population and a lot of rednecks.

No one told me I was being a jerk when I first started getting waves, they just kind of hinted at it. I wish they had been more blunt, or at least instructive. I get those nasty shivers down my spine when I think of all the people I snaked, not even knowing that it was a bad thing.

No, we didn't, but I made up for it by washing a couple of advil down with two beers and taking a long shower.

I have a race at PIR this weekend. For the first time in my life I would almost actually rather be doing something other than racing cars--downwinders are spooky addictive.

I enjoyed the segment of Mark racing the Sic model proto's.  Wonder how mine did.

That made me snicker. Mark should advertise that "every board is race tested--especially if it's fast. Some day those guys might get to make a board for themselves. But not very soon.

Hey, say something. You don't have to be a pugnacious butthead like me, you can just paddle over and tell them they're screwing up. It won't necessarily change behavior--I had a bunch of french guys laugh in my face at Kanaha last winter--but some times it will.

We didn't volunteer to be cops when we started doing SUP, but sometimes you gotta try to police bad actors, or you'll pay the price when some dick with a paddle gets SUP banned from an area.

Don't do downwinders unless you're prepared to be addicted. Makes crack look like a mild craving.

Dan Gavere and Nikki Gregg on the White Salmon. I'm pretty sure they didn't get any pictures of me--generally all they could see of me was my helmet.

You might consider a clipped nose like the Ku Nalu. It will add some volume forward and straighten the rails even more. If you punch that pointy nose into the back of a swell it will be a long time coming back up. As compromised as a 9' board will be I wouldn't be tossing away volume in the front for a slick looking nose. I wouldn't go round though--they kind of wobble like a Rapalla when you stuff them. The squashed diamond shaped nose that Mark used on the Ku Nalu seems to be a fine compromise. They look like hell, but they go very fast for their size.
