Thanx. I don't know why non-vets get the day off. I think it should be just us. ;P

Random / Too Funny--Caution--porno content

I got an email from some guy in Ghana today, very long and convoluted, asking for my advice because more than anything in the world he wanted to be a Pono Actist. I finally figured out from the context that he's looking for my advice on being a porno actor.

I'm constantly surprised that the questions I get today are not "what is that on your truck" but rather "is that an F18" or at least "why is your stand up board so long"

I rode my Norton today, finally got it back together--it had some issues: Starter motor was crapped out, the oil tank liner was coming off and plugging the oil feed lines, the chain guard had a broken weld, and the pilot jets in the carbs were plugged up. All better.

What a cool old bike, well, it's kind of a combination of old engine and new brakes and suspension. Makes me feel like I'm nineteen again. Doesn't hurt that it's beautiful. Got rained on, didn't mind. what fun.

A little bomber art on the tank:

Random / Re: Getting to bed early
« on: November 07, 2009, 09:06:26 PM »
It's a weird geezer thing. In bed at 11:00, up at 5:00. In bed at 9:00, up at 5:00. In bed at 2:00AM, up at five. Time zones and daylight savings time doesn't matter--up at 5:00. So that's one solution--get old.

Helps a lot with the dawn patrol though. I'm usually waiting for the gate to open at Kanaha. Sometimes I bring coffee and a scone from Anthony's for the guy that opens the gate. If he sees me there early he opens the gate for me. Mamma didn't raise no fool.

Incidentally, did I mention that I'm looking forward to getting back to Maui?

I think it's very cool that these things have kind of worked themselves out on a community level--sort of automatically. Most of the folks that I know who SUP on maui just simply don't go out at Ho'okipa, and it's not because they think people would stop them, they just don't. It's an understood thing. Like Pavillions is for Groms.

Last year the windsurfing vs. surfer thing was rearing up, I hear it's calmed down now. Hope so. Ho'okipa is a special place, nice to see it being used as a community asset with understanding and aloha.

Amen, ma'am. When I'm in Maui I drive by Ho'okipa every day to go surfing, and that's what I do, drive by. There's lots of other places to go, no need to piss off everyone. The kiters know that there's only a few guys that can kite there. That's the way it is.

I like doing SUP at Lanes, sometimes it's such a perfect wave, and there's days when there's no one around early in the morning, that I  go out there and catch a few. I've gotten a little grief coming back in, but it's lightweight.

The downside of Lanes is that it's probably one of the easiest places around to get killed within view of a parking lot. I've had two very scary incidents there, either of them could have gone the other way and I'd be on the wrong side of the topsoil.

I know, there's a lot of people that will say "I surf where I want to surf". And I pretty much feel that's just fine, but there ARE places that are special.

Setting the issue of safety aside, (I know, you can never set safety aside), do you notice more drag with the handle... and/or interference with the water flowing over the tail of your board?

I use mine like a stamp pad--keeps me from stepping off the back so often. I can't imagine it really dragging much, I'm sure some water hits it, but it's already washed over the rails and it's all turbulent--I don't think it does anything. Mine is mounted a bit more forward than some I've seen, but it works great. That's one seriously crapola job of glassing in the inserts though.

Damn I love that board. Can't wait to get back to Maui.

Speaking of Rob Machado, I ran into him twice at the Battle of the Paddle. He was just hanging out, checking it out--was there both days.

Is that your paddle or are you just happy to see someone?

23562
I think I'd rather be on a 12'6" or 14'er in those conditions.

The planing F18 is just fine in short pitching swells, the displacement hull not so much. I had it our a couple of days ago in a pretty strong wind--25-30 mph -- and it spent a lot of time going sideways.

How cool is that, you're right next to Magic seaweed and before Ke Nalu. I love firebug--the hack spaghetti code programmers best friend.

Too bad none of his stuff is on kindle. I've gotten used to not carrying paper. I wouldn't mind reading the Raw and the Cooked again.
