Gear Talk / Re: Knee Pads...
« on: January 19, 2010, 09:22:22 PM »
Try getting a cheap pad and cutting it in half so the pad is just above your calf and reaches up to the bottom on your knee. This stays in place better and pads what you need--the area just below the joint.

There sure can. Saw two longboarders get into it at Kanaha today. From where I was standing it looked like the fault of the guy who was freaking out and trying to hit the other longboarder. He was hanging out underneath the guy and kept moving under him every time a wave was coming. Guy #1 takes off just as guy ##2 spins his board to paddle and they collide. Guy #2 goes nuts.

Of course there could be history, but it sure looked weird.

Doing a little 180 practice really helped me today. Some pretty big bombers at Kanaha today. I was doing some pretty quick turns into vertical faces.

Son of Gecko is a righteous board, though the tail seems to wash out a bit more than Gecko, and it's tougher to drop into a windy wave. Bill Foote suggested bigger side bites. I got some, we'll see how it goes in the morning. More big waves headed here. Ho hum. More waves. What a winter!!!

I like to do a couple of cruising paddles longer than the race just to make sure I have a notion of the endurance required. I find that in a race I go as hard as I can for the distance, and it seems kind of automatic how much you throttle back. Long race I find I fall off about thwo thirds of the way, and then recover for a good finish--or not. I was pretty done at the BOP distance race, but that was because of a nasty headwind.

Bill...I think you should order a second one for when you have visitors.... ;D

I fell in love with the Maliko 14 and that's a bargain for such a great board. I agree on the Maxfield pads too, very nice.

An F18, the penetrator, Gumby and a Foote 14--I think visitors are covered. Also have two Gecko boards now--Gecko and Son of Gecko, so no complaints about being stuck with something low performance

254 on Sunday evening. On schedule more or less. I think I can do better, I just need to stop eating Diane's baking. She's been going nutz--cookies, coffeecakes, ice cream sandwiches. All for "guests" of course, but I have the discipline of a four year old.

You need some of those good Gorge hankies. Even I owned a 2.9.

I recently started swapping back and forth, which has the added advantage of helping me get used to switch stance for surfing

Good choice. I'm picking up mine this week. Can't wait.

You know, I'm not sure. I guess I'll find out when I pay Bill the balance on my board today. Hope it's done. I'm having the top done in yellow, white bottom and a sea foam green Maxfield Provisions pad. Can't wait.

Chump waves today--closeouts at Kanaha and double over ankle at Thousand Peaks (it was supposed to wrap, but didn't). Played around at TP all afternoon with my new Foote surfboard--a duplicate of the Gecko board only much lighter.

I practiced spins right in front of the little wave peaks. Got it down to really fast ones. The big trick--stay low, get your back foot back quite a bit, transfer weight to it as you start your sweep, then press down with the front foot to get the nose back in place. When your paddle is at the end of the sweep raise the handle and pull the paddle in toward the board.

Downwind and Racing / Foote Maliko 14s on the fast track
« on: January 17, 2010, 07:59:36 PM »
I was at Bill Footes place and saw that he has three Maliko 14 blanks built. I asked who they were for and he said "no one, I just had a block of that new EPS out of California so I made up some". He said the glassers have some free time, so he could finish these three boards in a very short time--as little as 4 weeks. Since it normally takes forever to get one of these boards (I'm still waiting for mine, should be done this week) if anyone is looking to get one in a reasonable timeframe, this is your opportunity.

Some of you folks that are new to downwind/distance racing may not be familiar with these boards. They are absurdly fast, super light, and gorgeous. For most racing they fall into the best category, 14' boards with fixed rudders are generally either considered stock or are in their own class. In our downwind board test everyone was amazed at the speed of this board, even in flatwater. Here's a link to the test: http://www.kenalu.com/2009/03/13/2009-stand-up-paddle-race-distance-and-downwinder-board-showcase-part-2/

Since these blanks haven't been milled yet you can get them in the width and thickness you specify, so they could be shaped for anyone up to 270 pounds (maybe more).

If you want one of these things you could probably contact Bill via PM here on the Zone

Yeah, that was pretty frustrating for me. I fell for no apparent reason, just a little bobble that somehow turned into stepping off the board. Put me about 50 yards back (that F18 is tough to get back up on) and that's where I stayed. So hard to make up distance on a flatwater race. You paddle like crazy and nothing changes. I thought I might get Lee at the end when he was clearly out of gas and I was gaining a little, but he saw me sneaking up and got back on it.

That crazy little SIC board is wicked fast. It looks like it would be slow, but jeez. I think that's the board Byron Yap bought from Mark after the first BOP and then sold for next to nothing. What a bargain.

Good idea. The form captures some of that, but I'll expand that to cover the years of surfing, etc.
