So Randy, WAS that Bill Foote doing that big bail? I guess it wasn't all that much, he was just one Foote in the air.

Maliko was sure fun today. Livio smoked all of us and went back for seconds. Bugger.

What's with the boardies over the wetsuit. You going kitesurfing with a bunch of yurupeens later?

Sure looks like him. Everyone was bailing the other day, lots of wind and big ramps. That looks like a Ho'okipa shot, I woulda thought Billy was too much out of practice to be playing at Ho'o. I know I am.

Gear Talk / Re: GoPro HD - Class 4 or Class 6 SDHC? 8mb or 16mb?« on: April 03, 2010, 12:01:02 PM »
I meant 32 MB above, and got it wrong anyway. Class 4 is 32, class 6 is 48MBits/sec or more usefully and logically perhaps, Class 4 is 4 MBytes/sec and class 6 is 6 MBytes/sec

My condolences. A senseless loss.
Got to say though, it's more than a little psychotic that a "sport" like cage fighting exists. What's next, bear-baiting? Bullies will exist whether or not there is a venue for them to legitimize their actions, but geez. 22777
Gear Talk / Re: GoPro HD - Class 4 or Class 6 SDHC? 8mb or 16mb?« on: April 03, 2010, 08:53:10 AM »
GoPro specifies class 4 (16mbit/sec) for HD cameras. I've been using a 8GB class 4 and it works very well. If you can find a class 6 (3mbit/sec) for a reasonable price it might be worthwhile because the card will be usable in higher write speed devices. I think the next generation of digital cameras require class 6 for optimal performance. I think when you put a slower card in a camera the cycle speed is automatically slowed to ensure you don't get excessive write errors.
I'm using 8GB because it was what I could get at the particular moment I wanted one. I would have preferred a 16GB, but settled. I get about 1.5 hours of video, but I've learned to my dismay that you need to keep an eye on a gopro--they shut off every so often for no apparent reason. They also chop your video into two 40 minute segments--probably a file size issue. At least they don't usually quit in the transition. The battery lasts for about 1.5 hours. Might go longer, but it seems to me that when I fill the 8GB card the camera is about done. 8GB is a lot of damned video, and every editing manipulation takes forever until you get it trimmed into usable chunks. 22778

I think one problem is that downwinders defy photography. Every picture or video I have seen of a Maliko run is a pale shadow of what it's like. It looks like people dabbing away at little waves, when the reality is that half the time you are looking up at mountains of water and you're going so fast you're afraid that if you fall there's no way your leash will hold.
South side runs look even more tame, but a few days ago I hit the water and bounced twice. I don't normally bounce. I have no solution. All I can say is that there are a lot of very good SUP surfers who look at blown out days with mounting excitement. And for all you inland paddlers, I'd say, find a Columbia Gorge. It's just about as good. I guarantee that every waterboy and watergirl in the Northwest is gonna go nuts when we introduce them to high wind SUP downwinders this year. It's going to be a crazy summer. 22779

I doubt there's a real minimum. Livio weighs about as much as one of my legs, and he's fast, fast, fast on the F16 V2. He's been winning every race he enters on the board. And trust me, it's not from lack of competition. I come in right about Konosuke. this was a low wind Maliko race. Slater came second in the BOP elite race. Jeremy--well, he's Jeremy frick'en Riggs. anyone who beats him by ten minutes has my complete respect.

Gear Talk / Re: Stiffness of Paddle & Distance Paddling« on: April 02, 2010, 07:32:21 PM »What about an everyday river paddle? I have a Sawyer and it's too long, I'm 72" tall and the paddle is 86" it's starting to bother my shoulders! So I'm looking to replace it...... Why don't you just shorten it? I find Sawyers to be a bit heavy, but if you feel a paddle is too long you're just a little hacksaw and some epoxy away from fixing that. 22781
Gear Talk / Re: Fins forward or fins back?« on: April 02, 2010, 12:13:22 PM »
I used to do fin forward and down, but that is a leftover from windsurfing where you usually leave the mast connector on and therefore don't go fin up. If you put your fin in the back and down you will inevitably walk into it, leaving a divot in your scalp that will have you cursing for hours and will forever close out the option of a millennial comb over (shaved head) Not that I've ever done that.

SUP General / Re: Whale tale/tail« on: April 01, 2010, 10:15:22 PM »Sort of looks poorly photo-shopped to me. I dunno. Sucks if it's real and someone says that I know! Nah, there have been so many whales around this year no one would make the effort. If I'd had a camera ready I could have had dozens of almost unbelievable shots, including one where a humpback was so close to me that his pectoral fin was under my board and visible (under water) on the opposite side. Covered me in whale spray. We really had to tiptoe around them numerous times. Felt like skateboarding in an elephant herd. I had exactly the opposite reaction--ho, hum, another whale shot. 22783

I like the Quickblade Elite. Spendy, but very light and stiff.

Dave says fins forward, but it seems kind of hard to me
Oh, you mean on the CAR! I stick them whatever way is handiest when I walk up to the rig. Half the time I have one going each way. 22785
