Every SUP surfer intentionally injured by a surfer from here on will have some deep pockets to go after. Remarkably stupid. Could cost them millions.

Slick parts--the bike stuff too. Our UPS driver doesn't look anything like that. You upcountry guys get all the good stuff.

Of course everyone occasionally cheats northwards a little, especially if the old fat guy on the huge yellow longboard isn't there to whine at them.

Wow, it sure got big, Jaws must be going off. About as big a swell as I've seen at my house. All you can see in the wind cam is the reform. Must be breaking way out at the Lowers reef edge.

Damn. I ordered one of those internet-connected Withings scales that measures your weight and bodyfat and wirelessly sends it to a website for tracking. Came today. Unfortunately it reads a LOT higher than the scale I've been using--says I'm 250.2 pounds and 23 percent body fat. Oh well, if I had stepped on it a month ago it would have said "one person at a time, please".

Still, it feels like a big setback. I'll get over it. The goal is still 210. Incidentally, 23 percent of 250 is 57 pounds of blubber. If I ditch that I'm gonna be one fast dude headed for Molokai. How fast would Connor be if we strapped 57 pounds of fat on his back.

Okay, well, he'd still be pretty fast.

I've been thinking abut that a long time. I tried a gas powered surfboard here in Maui a couple of years ago, they were pretty heavy, but fun. Tired you out pretty quickly though.

With Lithium Polymer batteries you could have a fairly light board with decent power and reserve. Of course you'd want to pull the batteries for charging since they can burn up. More than a few RCers lost their garage to LiPo. If they used LiFe it would be heavier but safer charging. Electric motors originally designed for big RC planes can be rewound to produce in excess of 5000 watts. That's about 7 horsepower.

Pretty practical. Make the surfers totally crazy though.

You asked for it. As you can see it's not just my jeep that has a nice rack. Yuck. And jelly rolls too.

These are from the Kanaha Wind cam. I'm sitting here with the second cold I've had in ten years trying to decide whether or not to go. Looks good but the wind is coming up.

Grumble, Grumble. Gotta go put some more clothes on and sweat this out of me. I never get sick, so I'm a total baby when I do.

You've outdone yourself Mike. I was laughing and snorting. My wife wanted to know what was so funny. You too Larry. You guys have to get together some time.

So here's the piece you are missing Zak. The regulation says nothing about leashes, and the PFD can be attached to the board. So tie a lifejacket to your board , don't wear a leash, and then paddle out into the open ocean--the Coast Guard says you're gold. And if you don't do it you can be fined. How stupid is that.

That's it, that's the bottom line. And any SUP broken in half, attached to you by a leash is worth infinitely more in a life-threatening situation than a PFD tied to your board floating a half mile away.

It's a stupid, stupid regulation written by someone who didn't have a clue and didn't care. Don't start second guessing Tim until you at least understand that. Tim and others in the HPWA have put in a huge amount of effort with no expectation of reward on our behalf.  How about a little appreciation, and take the time to at least understand the issues.

As far as a bitter tone goes, thank God it wasn't me writing it. I'm not fond of people who don't know what the f*%k they are talking about trying to tell me what to do, and using my money to enforce their stupidity.

/ I've been trolling there /

Larry, Larry, Larry...It's going to take Bob hours to figure out what that means. That's just mean.

I'm a troller too, though I do it under the clever pseudonym PonoBill.

Really, I don't mind a few trolls, I just wish they could spell and form an actual sentence. My guess is that we're dealing with a bunch of zit-crusted high schoolers who want to be surfers but their Mom won't buy them a board. Or maybe I'm giving them too much credit.

Uke, I think you got what you need here, at least I hope so. And for me, your post made me realize I hadn't played my trusty Mele in quite a while. Spent the morning with Jumping Jim. I suspect you're a bit past that.

Birthday in the middle of the week kind of hosed me. I'm having my teeth wired together for the remainder of the week.

Umm, actually, no. This here is Sir Uke A Lot, who is a Ukulele fan (like me, which is how I recognize his handle) and has been a legit member for quite a while. Minus one troll for Bob. There is a penalty for false positives.

Uke, the easiest way to handle this is to go to a kayak store and try on a bunch of Kayak vests. They have good designs that won't bother you. The concern is fainting while on your board, you don't want an inflatable--if you're unconscious you're not going to inflate it. Autoinflators don't make sense either--you'll fall in by accident and POOF.

Please take this seriously, I lost a very good friend a year ago when he crashed his race car at very high speed. He had been having fainting problems from fluctuating blood pressure and kept it a secret from the sanctioning body, which would have pulled his ticket until it was clear. The only saving grace was that he probably was unconscious when didn't turn at all at the end of the straight doing 140, but he could have taken others with him. He was a really good man and it just didn't have to happen.
