Downwind and Racing / Toasted Shoulders
« on: April 28, 2010, 11:46:02 PM »
The Maliko run today was awesome, but the run through the harbor burned out my shoulders. OWWW! Damn that offshore wind, that was hard paddling. I need a rest and a massage, but with only four days before I get on a plane I'm not likely to get either. I guess it's Advil washed down with cheap red wine again--the training regimen of geezers. I can rest on the plane.

Sure was weird to see the tug and barge suddenly appear next to the breakwater as I made my run in. I had to sit down and let them by. Don't they know the rules of the road? Sure were big. Sure looked sketchy in all that wind and swell. Shades of the Columbia River.

Still amazes me that we can do this. Sometimes it seems just impossible. What a hoot.

I'm not going to listen to Devin snivel about how her board is too big any more. She was flying when she went by me. So was Randy, but he was sitting down so it doesn't count.

SUP General / Back to Hood River
« on: April 25, 2010, 11:56:14 PM »
Yikes, I only have about a week left in Maui. On the plus side it looks like we have both a big North and South swell coming, and it looks like it's gonna blow like stink in the afternoons. Time for me to get frantic and pack every moment full.

Then again, I'm going back to Hood River and a very full racing season (cars and SUP), which ain't exactly bad duty.

What a winter. What a winter. I feel like Oliver Twist--Could I have another, just like that, please sir?  Thanks so much to all you folks that made it all so special. I'm going to be really busy getting every last bit of juice out of this year, so if I don't get a chance to see all of you all before I go, all I can say is, what a crew. Maui no ka 'oi. Have a great summer.

And if you make your way to Oregon know that there's always a beer in the fridge, a spare bedroom and a place at the table for any and all of you.

We really should do a second run,

Bill

I think I isolated my vertigo problem that returned on a Maliko run yesterday and left me doing a Pocahontas for a mile or so. As I suspected the sunglasses and flat light had something to do with it. It looks like the right lens of the sunglasses I was wearing is polarized incorrectly, probably a manufacturing defect. I started wearing that pair again just recently when I stepped on my normal Maui Jims. These are MJs too, but I preferred the other pair. I think I see why.

Even after I took them off the vertigo persisted until the sun came out. The surface of the water looked like it was moving in even more directions than it was. I checked the glasses by slowly rotating a second polarized lens in front of it. Horizontally polarized lenses work like louvers. If you cross them at 90 degrees they block all light, if you align them in the same direction they let it pass. My right lens is about 45 degrees different from the left. On another pair of sunglasses I checked the lens polarity is at the same angle. I'm going to bring these to Maui Jims in Lahina and have them check them out. They are great about warranty stuff.

I've heard that the light coming through clouds is perceived as "flat light" because it's highly polarized. Probably once the vertigo started the flat light was enough to keep it rolling. When the sun came out the vertigo decreased rapidly and I could stand for the last quarter mile.

Might be worth checking your sunglasses. No point in adding to the challenge of standing on a SUP.

DJ, so far yer buds are two for two. Two good southside downwinders in a row and tomorrow looks good too. At this rate they'll be toast before the Maui-Molokai comes up. Today was a bit more work since the wind was a bit offshore. I made the mistake of using the footie. A bad day to go rudderless. Fun all the same though my left shoulder is killin' me. I think I got in about five strokes on the left side all day.

Downwind and Racing / Downwind: Swellriding Part 1

After today's pathetic performance on a Maliko run you'd think I'd be too embarrassed to publish an article on downwind runs. But like everything else that's technical in Ke Nalu, it's just me writing, and other people's expertise. And the run really wasn't that bad, though I was so slow that everyone was loaded up and gone before I got to the harbor. I was working on stuff...yeah, that's the ticket...I was working on secret racing stuff with my Girlfriend...Morgan Fairchild, yeh...me and Tommy Flanagan..and Morgan.
