Foil SUP / Re: Fly the Wing - Take off the Stabilizer
« on: August 17, 2018, 07:59:58 PM »
I think this is an interesting idea for the rear stabilizer. Less drag and more power?

Looks like Lift Foils already has one in production:  http://www.mackiteboarding.com/lift-foils-classic-wing-170-fish/

Hard to find any pictures or info about it though.  Interesting concept.

I made some custom gaskets out of very thin rubber, have yet to test though.  They were easy to make and seem like they'll work, we'll see.

I don't know jack**** about the waves, I just seem to get lucky once in a while.  I probably get 1/10 really "good" days I go out.  The rest of it is just making the best of what's there.  Most of the time I can't even tell if it's "good" just looking at the waves from the beach! haha

I keep track of all the stats, and when I see what I think is going to be a good repeatable day, it rarely happens!  However, there does seem to be a few wise individuals who have figured it out, they're the ones who are always out there first when it's good... I think maybe my time is better spent watching when those guys go out than looking at the charts   ;D

I wouldn't write off a spot too quickly based on one or two sessions.  I'd give it a chance for a while, maybe the right combination of conditions will come together and it will be good at some point.

I was out today starting at a very low tide and ending with a mid tide.  While it was super low tide the energy in the waves was not enough to keep me going all the way to the shore ~2000ft away.  As the tide came up some, the waves appeared to stay exactly the same, they broke the same and were the same height, but somehow they gained energy (even though the waves were dropping in height according to the forecast).  When the tide came up a couple of feet there was a magic time where I could just foil effortlessly all the way to the shore.  Very strange, I guess it's not all about the height and period, but also local geography/currents and the height/direction of the tide as well which can make for good or bad foiling.

Thanks for sharing the pics, that's absolutely sick!!  Love the shot with the barrel in the background.  Is that the new JL 6'5 Flying V?

This was a cool chart I happened upon one day:  http://www.mackiteboarding.com/news/lets-chat-choosing-a-surf-hydrofoil/

I think I found a few errors on sizes, but most of it seems correct.

Foil SUP / Re: 75 Foil Sessions - Video

Nice!  So cool you have every session on video!  Too bad for all this wind we've had, no foiling to be had at all up here!

Wow that is brave!!!

Haha!  Nice one norcom!  Maybe you could use an aluminum plate and just add another strap to the board in front of the existing, that way keep both?  Or maybe just go all the way and install some additional strap plugs for another strap.

Drop the box in!  It really isn't too difficult or time consuming if you don't care how clean it looks on the finish.  The cassette can be shortened down to the thickness of the actual track inserts if needed I would imagine.

Yea, they sure had me fooled!  The thick heavy layup of the wings seems like they are bullet proof, who would have guessed that it was all for nothing without the mounting joint and mast being equally beefy.  Still a very nice design though, I love mine and it performs awesome.  Are you surfing yours or just kiting it?  Which wing(s) do you have?

LOL, there's always that! (flotation).. but does it float with an adapter bolted to it?   :)  … I still haven't checked mine!.. so I run a safety line around the mast to the board.

I think you'll find it is a 1:1 movement of the foil vs your foot, unfortunately.  I've seen some people come up with creative ways to move straps around using aluminum plates, that might be the way to go unless you're just looking for 1/2" to 1" change, in which case you can probably drill new holes to get.

Foil SUP / Re: paddle length
« on: July 31, 2018, 01:26:30 PM »
I've been thinking about this one a lot lately.  I broke a paddle last week and was contemplating how long my new paddle should be for foiling.  Pumping while foiling seems to make sense to have a longer paddle to reach the water.

However, I was considering this; when you compress your legs while pumping you have a shorter stance and are closer to the water.  In my case 5'10 and 32" inseam I get about 25" shorter somewhere between full squat and catchers stance.  My mast is 28" so I can pretty much reach the water normally when I'm fully compressed.

Another major factor I figured out the other day when my paddle hit my foil while pumping/paddling back out.  If you hit your paddle on the foil while flying you're highly likely to break the paddle!  Dave Kalama stated in one of this videos that he broke several paddles so far doing this.

Given the two cases above, I'm thinking the regular paddle length we're currently using is probably about right.  I thought about adding an inch or two, but after clipping the foil (and getting lucky in not breaking my paddle, that time anyway) I decided against making my new one longer.

I'm curious others thoughts on this though.

Careful not to move the hole so far to the middle that the leverage the foil has on the plate will break something... that's why I recommended you don't drill it any closer to the middle than a production plate has.. which is about in line with where the mast starts or ends, but not past.

The Naish and Groove adapters I have came with dual sets of holes, and I drilled an extra set on my custom adapter too.  I would just make sure the new hole is not too close to the original ones and not further in than other brands have gone with on the second hole placement relative to the mast location.  If you're worried about strength, leave the holes as is, otherwise countersink.  I got some cool cup washers so I could use the same flat Philips flat head screws on the Groove adapter, which doesn't have countersunk holes.

I've been using "Meguiars Mold Release #8" a lot with great results.  I can't say I've used it on aluminum specifically though, but I don't think it would matter too much.  However, I think that looks like the FoilMount CNC adapter that you're going to use as a mould, just like the one I bought from them too (but didn't use as a mould).  Feel carefully on the front and rear surfaces on the inside of the tuttle mount and you'll feel some machining steps in there.  Those may make it harder to release than a completely smooth surface like I've been working with.  You might want to extra wax up those micro steps so your epoxy doesn't get a hold in them.

I attached a pic of the steps...

(crap, I just noticed you were already aware of the steps, sigh...)

That last shot is great!  When someone asks what it's like to learn to foil, they should be shown that photo!   ;D
