SUP General / Safety tip thread.
« on: April 09, 2009, 03:57:32 PM »

I have been paddle surfing over a year now and I have picked up many tips from the Standupzone.  I was hoping people could write about some safety tips they use while paddle surfing.

My tip is keeping my mouth closed tightly when getting on my sup.  I learned this about 9 months ago and was remebered by it just today.  I was stuck inside the surf (like we all have been) and pulled myself unto my sup when the side of my paddle moved back from the white water and grazed my two front  teeth.  Luckily no injury but I made a mental note that I could have taken out my teeth accidentally.  I decided then I would always close my mouth tightly when hopping up to a prone, knee or stand up position.

I do this without thinking now and today it came in handy.  I was stuck inside today taking waves on the head and closed my mouth tight and pulled my self up to a prone position when the white water hit me and I lost control of the paddle.  Side of my carbon paddle hit me right over the upper lip.  No Injury.  I'm usually not a dufus and I don't want to be anal about this but If someone can be helped---good---if not forget my tip.  It got me thinking there is a lot of experience here and if you have a safety tip I would love to hear about it.
Thank You, Will

I've been doing this sport for a full year now and love it!  I started on a 11'4", moved to a 10'6" C4 and now riding a 9'6" PSH ripper.  I love the PSH (I'm 6'4" 230) but I see now there are a good amount of days  where a bigger board is better for the smaller surf, choppy conditionds or larger surf I get here in central Calif.  I sold my 11' and 10'6" to purchase the Ripper.

Has anybody moved from a short board back to a longer board and why?  I really don't want to haul around a quiver but if I had a second board to the 9'6"what would you suggest?  Finally... if you could only have a two board quiver what would they be?   Or what two boards work out the best for the conditions you surf in?  Does anybody have one board that covers all their surfing conditions?

Thank You,
Will

Gear Talk / Heavy weight tries Naish 9'6"
« on: October 03, 2008, 01:36:35 PM »

I tried the Naish 9'6" today.  I'm 52 years old, 6'4" weigh 230 with lots of surfing background, have been SUP ing for about a year. I currently ride a 10'6" C4.  The waves were 3 to 4 feet, slight wind chop, reef set up.  I hope this helps somebody... as I'm finding heavy weights and taller people need different types of sup boards compared to the typical 150 to 170  pound riders.  It was the same thing with my lay down boards and sailboards...usually thicker wider and longer than the average board.

The Naish rips on a wave!  The transitional stuff is definetly more difficult.  I did wobble and it feels tippy but not as much as I thought it would.  The side of the pads are flared up and for me it was uncomfortable standing as the pad felt like it needed to be an inch farther out on the rails.  Once on a wave it felt like a high performance nine foot longboard!  Drops in easy, first turn and its up on a plain, surfing off the tail and really responsive!  On the first wave I managed a full round house cut back, banked off the foam, another bottom turn and walked up the nose.  Again..this Naish on a wave rides a lot like a high performance nine foot longboard.  You can do all the moves.  That said, for my weight it felt too tippy and too much work.  I think this is perfect performance board for an aggressive 150 to 200 pound rider.

I caught a few more waves with the Naish and really enjoyed it.  I'm still in the hunt for a smaller board that rips like a shortboard, nose rides and is comfortable in the transitions for a 230 pound rider.  If you have a board like that please let me know what you ride.  That 9'8" or 10" Blane Chambers ripper has really sparked my interest...so does paddlenets Stamps model.  Everthing in this sport is changing quickly but for me I want a board that is at least as comfortable standing and paddling as my 10'6"C4.  It's great trying other peoples boards but I dont get the chance much as not a lot of SUP around central california where I live.

Adios, keep SUPing...Will

Gear Talk / heavy weight which board to get?
« on: August 23, 2008, 08:07:09 AM »

I'm 6'4" 230 lbs 53 years (recently retired) with lots of surfing experience, sup for one year.  I surf mostly beach break waves in central Calif.  I started on an 11 foot board and now use a 10'6" C4.  I use the C4 paddle also.  I really like the way the C4 surfs in waves that are waist high or bigger or really glassy conditions.  I'm finding the C4 tippy due to the vodoo shop I surf in most the time.  Thus the question is there a very stable board which is stable in chop, not too tippie but still surfs well for heavy wieghts?  Most the time I surf in small uneven chop even with no winds.  I've found that surfing next to reefs and rocks with small chop coming off them magnifies the tippiness of the C4.

I have developed a right ankle and foot ligament strain from too much suping.  I had to stop sup for a month.  (too many sprained ankles years ago playing basketball.)  Doctor says sup about 3 days a week and try and rest every other day.  I'm hoping a more stable surfing sup would make that ankle problem go away.  I was thinking of the new Naish 11'4" or the new Angulo 10'10".  Having a board shaped for me is an option but don't know where to start. Surfing thoughts from heavy weights would be much appreciated. This is a great forum!  Thank You, Will.

SUP General / please give me your reasons to start SUP.

Aloha SUP's-

Almost ready to make the financial jump to purchase a Stand Up Paddle Board with paddle etc.  I'm a long time long boarder living in California on the central coast.  SUP's are very rare here but plenty of areas to surf and explorer near Morro Bay. I already surf, windsurf and shore fish.  The part about the quiver of SUP's does concern me.  I do not want to carry around several SUP boards.  I weigh 230 pounds so the board will be larger anyway.  I was hoping you guys could explain why you enjoy Stand Up Paddle Board surfing compared to other water sports.  Anybody out there who has lost interest in surfing compared to SUP?  Anybody ever get sea sick SUP?  There is a wealth of information in this forum.
Thank You.
Will
