SUP General / 'Tis the season for shark sightings
« on: April 11, 2018, 10:24:15 PM »

I was scared out of the water sup surfing yesterday by a shark near Pismo Beach, Ca.  I was the only guy out in 3 to 4 foot surf.  It was traveling from north to south just outside the breakers as I was pointed out to sea waiting for a set.  I saw it approachng very slowly with about five inches of it's fin breaking the water.  I kept hoping it would spout like a common dolphin.  It never did spout.  It continued south just under the tail of my board.  I would say it was an approx. 8 footer.  Most likley a great white juvenile.  It did not circle me or act aggressive.  I was circled by approx 12 foot great white shark several years ago on the same beach that scared the****out of me.

I got a good look at it when it passed just behind me.  It just continued south very slowly.  I was mostly pissed off as I just got out in the water and really needed some sup surfing exercise.  I did not want to go in.   I stayed out in the water and caught some more waves until I got caught inside on a larger set.  I had to ditch my board.  With my legs dangling inside and and having a leash that broke last time I was out...I used some common sense and called it a day.

My unofficial documentation of 50 plus years of surfing in California tells me that the months of March, April, May and June are when the most shark sightings and bitings occur in Calif.

SUP General / Second day using Kook Cam
« on: December 30, 2017, 03:21:28 PM »

Ok...steep learning curve for me with this editing.   Wasn't going to post this but it was a super fun go out today.  Sunny and warm.  When I got out of the water the regular fog bank rolled in and it got cold fast.

I'll hopefully get better at editing as time goes by.  Waves are in central Calif.  Next time I'll face the camera more towards the horizon.  I'm open to GoPro session 5 settings that you think would work better.

SUP General / How can locals deem a spot closed to sup surfers?
« on: December 06, 2017, 05:00:56 PM »

I live in central California and surfing spots are definitely more crowded these days.  I occasionally sup surf a spot that locals (of which they all agree) have decided is closed to sup surfing.  I have lay down surfed this spot for 25 plus years but due to neck problems I only sup surf now.

I hardly ever sup surf this spot and always try and find another place to go.  This last swell left only this spot available due to winds and swell direction.  I've been told out in the water a few times that this is not a sup spot and to move down the beach.  I don't even respond to this and surf where I want to.  I'm always polite, upbeat and known by most of the crew.  They sort of "let me surf there cause I'm 62,  been surfing there for many years and have learned to sup surf."

This last swell the tension in the water was very high.  I let most of the good waves go (like I always do) but I also caught some good ones.  I usually get the "Stink eye' when I'm on a wave but don't usually care as I'm having fun.  This last swell on 5 of the best waves I caught somebody would cut me off.  I'm used to it and I basically move them out of the wave by surfing past them.  When I paddle back out they don't apologize for cutting me off just stink eye.

I left this "Go out" feeling discouraged that the vibe can be so awful to sup surfers that for me it was not fun.  I know this is exactly what the locals want but I'm writing here to get some feedback.

SUP General / Kelly's wave...making that last section

I would like to open up a discussion on what type of board (with the measurements) would be needed to make that last section Cairns is sup surfing here?

This is in no way disrespectful to I. Cairns surfing.  I'm curious what board measurements would work to make that section comfortably at his height and weight.  The board should also be capable of comfort while standing out the back? A google search shows Cairns at a height of 6'2" and lets say a little over 200 pounds.  He surfs the first part of the wave superbly...I'm more interested in the last part of the wave.

SUP General / Surfline gripe
« on: January 24, 2017, 08:52:53 AM »

Just wanted to look at Mavericks as the buoys still showing large swell.

  Then I get this:

"Stream Unavailable.
We apologize for the camera downtime due to an ISP issue on site. We are working with ATT to resolve the situation ASAP. Thank you for your patience."

The weather is much improved today (light winds and no rain) and Maverick's is probably rideable.  Surflines camera seemed to be working fine on Saturday when Mavericks was 40 + feet, raining, high winds and not rideable.  Makes me wonder?
