Gear Talk / Re: 3 piece travel paddle

Hi Burchas, great suggestion.  Yeah, I would like a hot glued 3 piece. Only thing is I love my oval shaft paddle for rapid automatic correct positioning of blade for surf.

Hawaii / Re: Where to SUS on Maui next week?
« on: November 22, 2018, 06:55:32 PM »
Thanks, PonoBill. Yeah, I should have checked the surf report sooner. Surfline (oh, that's what you meant by Surf Lies, haha) says that NW swell will be 15-20 Mon, 20-25' Tues and 10-15 feet on Wed.  How much of that size gets into Kanaha? Is there anywhere on W shore that gets NW energy knocked down 50-75%? I guess I like to SUS waves averaging shoulder to head high to 2-3' OH max.

Hawaii / Where to SUS on Maui next week?
« on: November 21, 2018, 10:01:18 PM »
Any suggestions on where to SUS on Maui next week. Am staying in Wailea and kiting Kanaha/Baldwin in afternoons. Have surfed west side, NW and N shore.... but it has been a while and not so sure about where to SUS. Am bringing SUP from CA where I live on beach. Am intermediate SUS...been trying about 2y. Any help appreciated. Where is good Kanaha lineup? Hard of a spot outside the Kahalui harbor. Thanks

Hi Area,
We seem to have a different opinion about SUP surfing. You said 'if you are just surfing it doesn't matter...."" To me nothing is more important that surfing and I hate water in my paddle. I care more about water in my paddle than I do about chips on my rail. I may have been able to use electrical tape on the lower join... but the upper joint will leak anyway. Your comments crystallized my thinking. I am returning my 3 piece and painstakingly packing my one piece Chinook Thrust 92 for air travel.

Gear Talk / 3 piece travel paddle

I currently use a fixed length Chinook Thrust 92 paddle which I LOVE.

I just bought a 3 piece Chinook 82 Thrust SUP travel paddle for a trip to Maui. My SUP discipline is SURF. I have not used this paddle but am worried I will not like it. I admit I am spoiled by the fixed length paddle.

This 3 piece paddle may be OK for flatwater paddling but seems to be less than ideal for SURF.

Seems this SUP paddle will leak at bottom joint and fill up with water in surf (e.g. when surfer & paddle are tossed around in and under water).  Might be OK for non-waveriding but seems that it will fill up with water in waves.

Most of the problems I ANTICIPATE are at lower joint. I think I could use electrical tape for bottom joint and also for the the  button that holds the bottom section on. Maybe I could silicon seal the lower section while I am on location away from home and then crack it apart for travel to back home.

Cheers

SUP General / Re: As SUP wave riders are we scared of "regular" surfers?
« on: October 17, 2018, 07:59:24 PM »
I have been a prone surfer for >40 years (a kitesurfer for >15 years) and a SUP surfer for >3 years. As a novice SUP surfer, I do try to stay away from surfers especially those I know, because I think they will not appreciate me, I don't want to compete with them and I don't want to have to worry about killing them.

Gear Talk / Surf Travel Paddle 3 piece
« on: October 17, 2018, 07:53:50 PM »
I am trying to choose and buy a 3 piece SUP paddle for SURFING. I regularly use a fixed length, full carbon paddle with an oval shaft (Chinook Thrust 92). My favorite features are the clean shaft for moving hands, oval shaft for switching hands and the lightness. I am really apprehensive about a paddle with a clamp style adjustment mechanism near my hands. I am intrigued by Werner's adjustment in the handle (and cleaner shaft).... but will miss my oval shaft (on Chinook whose adjustable has a big clamp). Curious what other SUP surfers' opinions are on paddle preferences.

Gear Talk / Re: Paddle for surfing, what is a good choice?
« on: October 14, 2018, 06:54:01 PM »
I'm using a Chinook Thrust (v-drive imitation) 92 all carbon for surf. This is my first paddle with an oval shaft and I love the self positioning feature for quickly and automatically (85% of the time) getting the paddle in the right orientation. I will buy a Chinook Thrust (v-drive imitation) 82 3 piece travel paddle for a trip to Maui in late Nov and will see if I like the smaller paddle area for quicker strokes. Don't really know much about shaft stiffness for surfing but trying to learn more. I am guessing the oval carbon shaft in above paddle is quite stiff.

SUP General / Re: Keep SUPs Out of the Ocean
« on: June 30, 2018, 01:15:43 PM »
I am a surfer, kitesurfer and SUP wave surfer. We kitesurfer's used to say paddle surfer to distinguish a "real" surfer from a kitesurfer. Now we have to distinguish prone paddle surfers (think Kelly Slater) from standup paddle surfers. So I guess paddle surfer could work for SUP surfers .... but then we kitesurfers would need to a way to delineate between prone and standup paddle surfer. Good thing is not many of us kitesurfers, so no worries.

I also was trying to understand why to keep SUP (stand up paddle boards out of the ocean). Thought it was the usual tired "my ocean" argument. I watched the video skipping along until I heard single use plastics. Got it.

Gear Talk / Re: JL Striker
« on: June 29, 2018, 11:35:38 PM »
I am really interested in picking up a 9'5" JL Striker for surfing real waves shoulder to 2' OH beachbreak in Nor Cal. I am a longtime longboard surfer and have been looking for a legitimate longboard style SUP for waves. I often prefer not to have a pointy nose in front of me. I also want to be able to cross-step my way to the nose on that luxurious full deckpad. The above comments provide interesting discussion of other positive performance characteristics. I am on a 9'5 Naish mana right now which has 163L.  I think 147L would be a good step down that I an manage.

Gear Talk / Re: Coiled leashes any negatives?
« on: June 24, 2018, 06:00:18 PM »
This thread has been very informative. I paddle 95% in the surf and the coiled leashes have intrigued me because they won't drag, cause drag or get caught on occasional floating kelp. However, I understand from a number of comments that the the coiled leashed become a mess when they are pulled hard from a surf wipeout in the surf. I will not be buying a coiled leash.

SUP Safety / SUP Paddle Handle in Face
« on: June 24, 2018, 05:40:57 PM »
I just got 3 stitches in my eyebrow from a SUP paddle handle in the face. Most importantly, it ended my awesome surf session and I am out of the ocean for at least a week (am a little scared of my paddle). I was SUP surfing, paddling for a wave when my top hand came off the handle (I guess). This is the second time I have taken a paddle handle to the face in the last few months. Has anyone else done this? Disclaimer: My left hand, top hand on strong side is small, while my right hand is normal size (large)...so it may be a physiological problem. Nonetheless, I am wondering if others may have experienced this injury. I can't remember if I was switching paddles sides and missed the grab with my top hand ...now that I think of it, that may have been what happened. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
