Just attach your rocket packs and go flash gordon.... ;D

Hahhh!   I could have used a rocket pack!  I am pretty sure Jeremy had one  ;)

I think you will really like the Votrice.  I just paddled one (not the XP) in a 9 mile downwind race on Saturday and it was catching bumps very nicely and is real stable.  I have tried the XP but not in a real downwind environment.

Channy and I picked up these two from Ralph at Second Wind.  The downwind crowd here has been kind enough to take us under wing and tip us out on the basics.  Many thanks to Bill Foote, Jeremy, Randy, Frank, Kent, etc for helping us out.  I feel like you guys slimmed the learning curve a lot with your info.

We realized after day one that these boards (at 6 inches thick) require way longer paddles than our wave shorties.  We picked up two Werner paddles from Leo at Hawaiian Islands that made a world of difference.  Everything you guys have been saying about those seems true-awesome paddles.

Hi Bill,

I went this Friday and it was Stylemasters and Stylemasters 2.  The segments on Larry Bertleman and Buttons alone would have made the night.  It has been all older stuff so far.  GOOD TIMES!

Thanks for the warning Randy. I would think this board must be strong because in the open ocean I would believe there is alot of abuse going on.

I was told that it is plenty strong for everything you might throw at it in normal open ocean use, with the caviats that it was not made for breaking surf and that you need to be more careful than usual about knocking it into things (hard impact).  Man, I wanted to be out on one today!  I may just pony up for one of the standard models.

Best,
Randy

Knowing me I will probably use it in the surf more then downwinding it.

Hi Byron,
Did you see this warning label on the C4 page?  I was told this board is pretty fragile.

Just read this article and it had some cool info.

http://www.standuppaddlesurf.net/2008/03/28/f-176-and-the-ass/#more-359

I am mostly peaked by the talk of weight as an asset when it's windy.  What do you guys think?

You shoulda jumped on the Vortice at the showcase when you had the chance Rand. I didn't try it either. Didn't want to look like  a complete idiot. I definitely want to try my hand...and feet...on something made for distance now though.

You are soooo right.  Truth is that I had absolutely no interest in that side of things for the longest time.  But seeing that glide...

Time to tool up.

Yeah, we're in.  Great fun!

I know that I should not go into Second Wind anymore. They had vortices everywhere I looked. I became so blinded all I remember is putting my name on an XP when they arrive. Should be good in the surf but not sure about downwind. Sorry I wish I could help.

Aloha

Byron

Hahhh!  You too huh?  That standard foam Vortice on the cieling looked really good to me, and has me wondering about the Carbon model.  But....26.25 wide has me thinking that I may be spending a whole lot of time balancing and not really as able to give it my all (and I haven't got that much all).  27.25 is right in there with my normal wave board...so...

We see tons of guys going Maliko to Kahului and kind of just doddling along, but lately I have seen some folks on longer boards just screaming past (almost at OC-1 speed) with tons of glide and it has me way interested for those flat windy days.

Has anyone paddled both?  Others?

Here's a qoute from Dave Parmenter, who I think is (also-besides being a sick surfer and top shaper) an outstanding surf writer.  I remembered reading this article a while back and having it dispel some misconceptions that I had heard about what side bites are actually doing :

"One must remember that the tri-fin array, on any surfboard, is only "faster" if it is pumped or rapidly turned from rail to rail. In a straight-line trim the tri-fins are just so much drag. If the leverage and torque that they offer the surfer aren't exploited with a more active surfing style, then they are wasted or misapplied. "

The whole article:

You talking mainland or HI downwind paddling ?

I guess I don't know.  We have recently been looking at some flat water with pretty strong winds, and we have decided to join in.  I was in Second Wind and got an eyeful of the C4 Vortice, and I guess some of the carbon ones are coming too.

I am interested to know about these guys.  Is lighter for sure better?  Does a bit of extra weight hurt?  F-16, Starboard Point, Vortice Carbon, Vortice Foam.  Any other production models?

I just want to go faster with less muscle and less skill  :D

What do you know?

This is a call out to the folks who are already involved in Downwind Standup.  What is the fastest downwind board you have ever paddled?  If you have padlled more than one, please compare.  Interested to know experiences and if anyone has ever jumped on a model that has made you think, "damn, this thing screams!".

We are looking for boards designed only for making time (not for waves, fishing, or general purpose use).

We are very interested to learn from your trials.

Thanks!

Randy

sorry everyone, I just saw a very similar post from a few days ago. should have read the whole forum first!

Don't worry about that, no one here is going to get worked up.

BTW, welcome aboard!

Yours is a big question as it has probably affected most of us at one point or another.  In addition to all of the good info on that other post, I can just add that, for myself, I felt a strong popping in one shoulder for the first week or so when I was getting started.  I am not quite sure exactly what was doing it, but my guess is that I was trying to do everything with my arms.  As I started using more of my body in the stroke, this went away.

I hope that helps.

Hi Guys,

Byron,

Randy takes SICK photos.  So does Frank (who actually has a degree in Video, and gets tremendous video footage as well).

Sam,
That is this board (9'2-second one down):  http://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php?topic=1234.0

It pretty well drives itself.
