He mentioned that in HI, downwinding, there was a definate performance break at 14' and the addition of a rudder vs no rudder added an even larger advantage.  He mentioned that quite a few of the big HI races made class breaks based on where the big performance breaks were.

Thanks for the great post dFresh!  If you could, email over the guidelines and I will be happy to post them here.  Personally, they sound good.

Some of the most impressive results in my book, were from the guys on shorter boards.  The bolded finishes below were on 14's, except for Jeremy Riggs who was on his Bill Foote 12'6.  Yeeeeoooooowwww!  The last few days of playing around have a few of us scratching our heads as to what the advantage might be to long, and in what conditions.  I don't pretend to know the answers.

Hi Noa,

The king of concave paddles has to be the Quickblade Peahi.  It is one mondo water scooper.

http://www.quickbladepaddles.com/standup_paehi.htm

You can't get a good feel from the picures at that link, but it is heavily concave just below the shaft, gradually progressing to no concave at the tip of the blade.

...This week we have had some of the funnest Maliko conditions you can get - strong winds, straight down the coast, really good rolling swell.  Even better, these have been board-tradin' runs and we have been able to get a few miles in on a bunch of different boards.  Stock F-16, drop deck F-16, Custom 12'6 SIC, Custom 14 foot carbon SIC, Vortice, Vortice XP carbon, Bill Foote's 12'6 downwinder and even Jeremy's 24 inch wide Bill Foote torture stick.  I think all of our heads are spinning with maybe more questions than answers.  It is great to get to consider all of this stuff, even if it is far from proper testing.  ;D :o ;D

Sam, that thing is looking amazing!   Thanks for all the shots.  I had never seen that process and your photo journal was really informative.

What is different about the shape of your SP Vortice from the current foam model or the hollow XP?  How wide did you go?  Any idea about what the finshed weight will be?

Niiiicccccceeeee!

Looks like the top two SUP's at the Henneseys Race were on Bark boards... hmmm....

Hey Dane,

Where were you able to see the board models?

I would love to meet some of the SUZ gang. Who will be there?

We really would love to, but are way late for this year.   We had no idea that the dowind/race thing would hook us like it did.  We are planning on doing it as a mixed team next year.  Here is a very jealous best of luck to all of those who are in.

SUP General / Re: Banner advertising
« on: July 24, 2008, 09:05:08 AM »
Whoooooaaahhh!....there's something going on at the top of the page :)

Hi guys,

I should probably have posted on that when I put it up.

The nice folks at GSI emailed us to see if we would add some of their brands to our manufacturer list that I did not have listed there.  This happens pretty regularly and we ask that anyone who is not listed do so.  It keeps us current.  We did that, and they asked us if we would consider doing some banner advertising.  We were stoked that they thought so highly of our site as to want to support it.

The manufacturers that contribute here already know (through their web stats) the traffic that they get through standupzone links both static and on the forum.  We actually have no intention of soliciting anyone to advertise with us, and we have never done it.  I mention that, as there was a bit of concern that we had opened this selectively.

The thing we like about banner advertising, is that it is very clean and easy to understand the motivations that are present, and I think it gives users here an opportunity to make their own judgements from there.  To us this is way cleaner and more forthright than accepting money, trade or deals for our opinions or more subtle support of brands (advertorials, etc).  We would never do that here, and never have.

Soooo....we walk the fine line of maintaining the grassroots thing we have going on here and offering value to advertisers.  First off, we are not going to trash standupzone.  Second, we would not feel right about taking money for an ad, and not making sure that it was entirely succesful for those who trusted us to handle it.  We will never request that anyone click our ads to help us.  Quite the opposite.  If an ad is a good match for the site, it will interest the users here.

If there are any technical site problems that arise with the ads we put up, please let us know and we will get them modified.  The Flash banners are set to play once (not loop) per page load.  You have additional controls over them with right click.

Best,
Randy

In my humble opinion, you've got an odd ball sized board. Almost ALL boards 11 ft long will be 28" wide minimum, and many 29" wide.

The freakish narrow width for such a long board, makes that model fairly advanced by 11 foot standards. So don't be bummed over the challenge to master it. It will be much more difficult than other "normal" sized 11 footers.

Just another opinion for your consideration.  SurfTech alone (who produces your Laird 11), produces large group of 11 footers:

Munoz 11' - 25 wide
Takayama 10'7 - 27.5 wide
Laird (Ron House) - 27 wide
Robert August  11' - 28 wide
Steve Bahne 11 - 28 3/8 wide
Takayama 11 - 28.5 wide

IMO they offer a lot of choice for riders who are considering that length, some more targeted for early stage riders, others more advanced.  You can see Eddie ripping on a custom Laird on the 3rd vid down on our homepage.  Kent, in the top vid is on the narrow long Munoz.  Guys who are digging the longboard style are commonly riding 10-12 footers down to as narrow as 23.  What you have there may take a bit of work at the beginning, but I know at least 3 on this forum who started on the very narrow Munoz, progressed and are currently ripping.  It seems to me that this is still a valuable board for you guys.  Certainly a great cruiser for your wife in flat water and a good, if not challeging first board for you.   I certainly would not consider it second rate.

I hope that is helpful.

SUP General / SUP Glossary
« on: July 23, 2008, 04:50:29 PM »
PlankSpanker (via Stoneaxe) just mentioned SUPmarine as a potential entry in the SUP glossary.  Well, Im pretty sure no such glossary exists yet but I'm thinking we should get started on that.  If it gets good, we can give it a static home here.

So, here is the original, and my addition.  Have at it  ;D

SUPmarine - Standup board that will not quite float its rider
Oaron - Popular surfing forum term for us stand up padllers

Gear Talk / Re: Anybody ride their SUP as a twin fin?

A little over a year ago, I was riding a PSH 9'2 with MR Twins in a super twin setup (with a 3 inch trailer).  It worked unreal for getting moving in smaller softer waves.  Here is the thread with some pics:

Anybody tried any of Joe's race boards?  Just checked out his site & they look beautiful.

I agree.  Those are some sleek looking boards.  I did see these at both of the recent Hawaii events.  They look really steamlined.  The board I looked closely at seemed more smooth ocean oriented, but it looks like he has a whole range so...

California guys, any info?

coming out of the channel at turtle bay was kind of scary/chaotic.  one guy got hit by a wave and lost his board on the reef.

Yeah, getting out to the start was cause for some raised eyebrows on the beach.  To explain a bit, the launch is in a beautiful lava bay with a sand beach.  There are lava spurs that dot the water on the right and an exposed shelf on the left, so you have about a 30 foot gap to go out through.  There was a waist to occassionally shoulder high crumbly wind swell that was intermitently breaking on the reef in the gap.   What makes this all interesting is that it was a group launch (stand up and prone together) of 184 people (all excited to get out and find a good spot on the start line).  On the beach I think we were all looking at that little gap and wondering, "how are gonna get all of this...through there".  One of those 16 foot boards gets pushed sideways by a crumbler in front of a group and...

I heard that there was a few incidents, but my group skated out pretty smoothly.

Keala-congrats on your finish!!  Anyone who did that event knows that it was actually a really tough grind, and it felt like more than 8.5 miles to me.  Even though there was swell at the beginning, I could not buy a glide to save my life for the first mile or so.  Did you mean that there were actually 7 women in unlimited?  It seems like a lot of stand up paddlers are not showing on the results.
