« on: August 01, 2008, 08:28:54 AM »
Hi Guys,

Here are the available sizes and prices:

Note:  I had the following exchange with the manufacturer about fit:

Me:  What width board can we say will fit in each size, assuming normal thicknesses (4.5 for smaller boards, 5 for larger?).  Is there extra length as well?  Might the 12 fit some 12'6 boards?

Manufacturer: I think we could say 29"  to 29 1/2" width. For the 12'0"x36" SUP bag, we could say 31" width size (it fits the Laird SUP). There is extra length, about 4". I do not think a 12'6" SUP will fit in the 12'0"x36" SUP bag.

9’0”x34”  $89.00
9’6”x34”  $89.00
10’0”x34” $89.00
10’6”x34” $89.00
11’0”x34” $99.00
11’6”x34” $99.00
12’0”x33” $99.00
12’0”x36” $99.00

Shipping needs to be $25.00 mainland, $35.00 Canada and HI (about 2 weeks).

Gear Talk / Re: Tail pads -- anyone using them?
« on: August 01, 2008, 08:14:10 AM »
Hi Linter,

Right now, I have on a OAM pad.  I am unsure of the model.  Most of the brands offer a wide variety of ridges, kicks and configurations, and the selection and models seem to change every time I go to the store.  So, I just look for one that will fit nicely on the tail of my board, that has a good strong tail kick, and a subtle ridge (not really abrupt because that feels bad to me when my foot finds it).  Oh, and of course it needs to look good (to me).

I wish I could be more specific, but this is kind of like telling someone else what tastes good on a burger  :)

I hope that is helpful anyways.

Hi Linter,

I like using a tail pad with a mild hump.  When you "reach back", but are not all the way up against the final kick, you can still feel the ridge, push or pull hard and make use of the pad (and it feels really good under foot if you choose the right one).

A hidden bonus to these pads is that when you are down, you can put your forearem on the pad, parallel  to the kick, and use your body weight to sink the tail under.  Works great for smaller waves.

This thread would make a nice Ke Nalu story. Any objection, Randy, to me using some of this stuff?

Hi Bill,

You are welcome to it.  We are all just sharing our experiences as we are participating and learning.  None of the photo's are mine to give or I certainly would.

That comment about a good board bums me out a bit Rand

I didn't mean to sound negative...actually the opposite.  Noworries had a tough first run because she was on a wave board that would not glide for anyone in the conditions that we saw.  My first day (on a similar board) was the same.  You plow instead of glide.  Some of the bigger all purpose boards like yours do just fine.

If you do get on a downwind board that is nicely sized for you, then it gets really fun.

Wow.... that first shot of the F-18 makes me want to try the downwind again... except for having to buy ANOTHER board.

Get a good board, try again.  You live here; It is a must.  My first experiences on a standard wave board that was not for downwind were horrible and made me think, "why does anyone bother?".  On a fun board, though, I think a good downwinder beats summer waves on most days (and I can't believe I am saying that).  If you want to try again, we will try to find you a really good loaner.

Sam,
I can not believe how well this turned out.  Really polished looking product.  Most impressive is the 27 lbs.  My stock Vortice weighs 37.5 (bathroom scaled it yesterday).  10.5 lbs of difference and yours is wider.  That is HUGE.

Congrats!

Hi all,

If you have a site that's core content is Stand Up Paddling, and that has a frequently updated RSS page, let us know.  Our blogs page http://www.standupzone.com/rss.htm will pick up the feed and display your most recent posts.

CSX355, I was unaware of your blog, but added it after your recent post (thanks for the link BTW)

PonoBill, I changed your link to Ke Nalu.  Let me know if it is pointed where you would like.  The new site looks great!

Best,
Randy

Gear Talk / Re: Deck Pad Colour
« on: July 29, 2008, 10:42:09 AM »
Hi Surfpainter,

Is it possible that that is due to the adhesive?  I had a spot on my current board where the pad's adhesive did not stick so I used some additional contact cement to set it down.  I went a bit wide of the pad thinking it would come off clean.  Well, it did come off, but it reacted with the top coat and discolored it (darker like yours).  the discloration is down in the top suface of the board.  Even light sanding did not remove it (but it helped a bit).  Since then others have said that this can happen with adhesive.

Best,
Randy

i imagine a concave shape like that would benefit from a smaller blade area since it hold more water. so many designs to explore...

Sol Morey has been building some really cool and unusual paddles over here.  He let me try a one with the smallest blade I have ever seen or used the other day, and it felt really good.  This was on a smallish wave board and it allowed for hard quick stokes which got the board going right quick.  Like you said, so many designs to explore...

I emailed Joe for a bit of follow up info.  On top of the customs he is making, he has a Surftech 14 on the way.

Cool times.

thanks for showing me that. didn't know the Peahi had that shape. pretty interesting. any other feedback on how it feels when paddling ?

Chan loves hers, and uses it for surf a lot.  I had one and found it to be too much bite.  It feels like you are pulling the whole ocean when you set it.  That seems to be what its built for.  Major pull.  The thing is unreal for moving a lot of water, but it exausted me quicker than many others.  I was using it on a board that had very little glide, so the combination was tough.  I think that with a glide-ier board, it would be entirely different.

Hope that helps.
