So cool that you are considering more Pro-Only spots in the future. Teahupoo is the first, but there are so many other spots that most would not even paddle out to. Teahupoo, Pipe, etc. In my mind, the guys that can commit to surfing those spots, regardless of the conditions on the day of the event, are the real pros. Too many events have already been focused on the same group of waves. It has been great, but having more of the same will do nothing to open new eyes.
Great work, and stoked to see this happening! 5163

Guys are getting deeper than that consistently? Sheez, that blows me away. I can't wait to see footage. Please somebody make a good film on these tahiti guys so we can get footage. There is incredible footage of Laird, Raimana, etc, with okoles on the foam ball here (the action starts at about 2 minutes in): http://www.surfline.com/video/featured-clips/teahupoo-super-session-09_27527 5164
SUP General / Re: Blair SUP - WaveRod - Honesty and Ethics?« on: June 21, 2009, 06:46:31 AM »Sean designed the manufacturing for SUP at Sumitomo, and I might add, others have benifieted greatly from his efforts. Is the Sumitomo factory still producing boards? We had heard a while back that they had called it quits, possibly to open again on a smaller scale. Is that correct? Sean is for sure an innovator. I did not know that he had set up the process there. That makes a lot of sense. 5165

Rode the F-16 (the Pepto-board) again yesterday. It had been a while. Board is unreal.

Gear Talk / Re: Would like advice on a second board to get« on: June 19, 2009, 07:24:16 AM »I've been seeing a lot of people lately that moved down from their bigger boards to a Sub Vector in order to get "radical" and are still surfing it from the middle of the board and are basically point and shoot surfers. That is one of the cool thing about some of the newer, shorter boards from the top designers and groups. Afer a few months of paddling, new paddlers with limited surfing background are able to get on shorter boards and can surf them equally well or better on the first day than than they had been on their older larger boards. From there they learn quicker and feel great about it. We have seen this a bunch here, but of course this benefit is not limited to a single brand or model. The best boards in this group are also being ripped on by long time advanced surfers. C4 has a winner in the Sub Vector as it certainly fits both of those rider groups. The OP is in Canada (read frozen feet, booties, full suit) and sounds like he is getting out in beach break conditions with wind and chop. To me, that screams stable, fun, board, not minimum possible board. 5170

Hi Matt,
You are making the switch / adding a board at a very cool time. You have lots of options and more soon to come available in that size category. If you found yourself on Maui or other Standup forward spots, you could demo boards in that range for two weeks and never ride the same one twice. I can tell you that at the end of those two weeks you might still be a little confused as to what to go with, but you would be smiling Even though the SubVector is 28 3/4 wide, it can be ridden really hard. There are two guys on the SW shore that are proving that daily over here. I think C4 is making custom widths as well. I have never ridden a Ron House board, but I would not shy away from 28 as a rule. At your (our) size, that can be wide enough or even more than enough for full stability. One thing that has been mentioned here a lot recently (Wardog called it the bowling ball effect, and that is a pretty nice term for it) is that boards that are relatively thick throughout for a given rider's weight can set you pretty high up above the water, and in some cases this can effect your stability. So, in smoother water they might paddle fast and be perfect, but add wind, chop and current and your hands are full. Happy searching! 5172

This vid was of the 2005 swell. We surfed Olowalu but it stunk, left to surf Macregor, which was unreal but got windy, and then surfed Suda's Store (which I haven't seen break since). Watched Maalaea that afternoon having drinks on the lawn. That was some of the best surf spectating ever.
