SUP General / Home Page Updates
« on: July 02, 2010, 01:17:58 PM »
We will be working on a new portal page over the next few days that will hopefully be a bit more integrated with the rest of the site.  It is a work in progress.  Let us know if you encounter any bugs or issues.

I watched it on Sea Breeze for the first time this morning.  The guy's will to enjoy his life is incredible.  Plus, beautiful film making.

Yup, when he gets into that wave towards the end...they hit on the central pull with this one.

Yeah, the guy who is hiking out controls the sheet.  He is harnessed in (and the harness has a pfd and a quick release for the obvious reasons).  The boat is set up with a canvas that zips closed to cover unused paddler positions.  In the photo, seat 1 is closed up.  As the wind and swell picked up we also closed down seat 2 and that person hiked out as well.  That gets more weight off of the bow and out over the ama to help keep 'er down a bit.  When it got really blasting and big, the guy in 5 grabbed a steering blade to help keep to course.  So, at it's best you have two steering, two paddling, and two hiked out...all grinning.

This pic of our run is in this month's Pacific Paddler.  The shot is of us leaving Big Island and heading out into the channel.  Reminds me of how unreal that was.

Nice backhand riding.  Post up some pics of the boards, please.

Couldn't help but notice your paddling your dad's Scorpious. Was wondering how the XM is working for you ???

Love the full sized Scorpius for downwind in good bumps.  I have 6 days in the XM now and it is a great boat.  It jams in the the flats and the small stuff and feels a tiny bit small when it gets bigger (which is what we have had this month :)).

What is dave's speed while shooting that video?

Not sure about this one, but Dave averaged over 10 MPH in his two fastest Mailiko runs which were right at 53 minutes for the 8.9 (downwind) miles.  Those two days had conditions where everything lined up.  Large, organized swell running straight at the harbor, big steady winds, etc.  This day was great but not at that next level.  One of the canoe guys we went with had a friend in from Big Island and this was his first Maliko run.  The friend was told that this was a B+/A- kind of run.  That seems about right.  Just guessing (because we stopped and regrouped a number of times), but I would guess he would have been in the 54-57 minute range which would be a mid to high 9 MPH average.

Random / Great OC6 vid

Some great footage of OC 6 in the new school boats powering hard through mixed up quartering conditions.

...or when you have plenty of speed and the next lane over looks like this:

time to jump the fence.

This day was very fun, with sections towards the end that were awesome.  On the very best days, though, Maliko turns into a big playground with huge, wide troughs that get head high or better the whole way down.  We had three of those days this month and they really are something to see.

What caused the foot shot?  Looks like you fell back Randy and then recovered.  Must be quite a thrill ride!

Thanks for the vote of confidence on the assumed recovery, but no such luck.  I was turned around to shoot Livio behind me and something kicked my Ama just a tiny bit...at least that is what I'm going with.  I felt my weight shift right just enough...then my foot sarted to get a mind of its own and rise up...and then I fell out of the boat.   ;D

We had figured that because of the wide angle lens, which makes even close things look distant and tiny,  we would need to be right on top of each other.  It is hard to tell but we were all 1-3 feet away from each other alot of the time.  We were knocking boards, boats, paddles, which kept us laughing the whole 9 miles.  Very fun.  Each of us got dunked.  I got to cut Dave off so aggregiously that he had to Superman bail.  That was very satisfying ;D...but unfortunately it didn't slow him down.  Note to self...Don't anger the Kalama.

What setting did you have your gopro set to?  It looks less fish-eye than most gopro videos.

I set the Gopro to 5 (1920x1080) which has the narrowest angle of view.

DJ,
Stoked that you guys are getting wind too.  Still amazed that we can share this stuff around the world like we do.

Bill,
For sure.  Lets do it next week if we get some good days.

Paddledaddy,
Dave is hard for me to film.  He bursts so fast that a lot of what you see is him jamming on the paddle in flat looking water.  But that is really him setting up to blast into a swell.  Once he's in, he's already ahead...and then he's gone.

Updated to Vimeo.  See if that helps.

Here is a Maliko vid that we did a couple days ago of Dave Kalama, Livio Menelau & Devin Blish.  This was from a gopro HD that I wore on my head (I went OC1).  We tried to stay as close as possible.  At the end I included a little video of the water that give an idea of the smoothness of the swells that we saw that day.
