From Outside Mag:

In April 2011, on the last day of a month-long trip to Argentina’s Salta Province, Wellburn photographed mountain biker Mike Kinrade, of Nelson, British Columbia, riding off a 30-foot-tall mesa outside a protected area known as Quebrada de las Conchas. “The drop wasn’t even the hardest part,” says Wellburn, of Williams Lake, B.C. “It was the entrance.” To get onto the mesa, which was roughly six feet wide, Kinrade rode down a ridgeline and jumped a 10-foot gap. “He styled it,” says Wellburn. “Then he went back and did it again so we could shoot it from another angle.” THE TOOLS: Nikon D300, 70–200mm f/2.8 lens, ISO 400, f/8, 1/800 second

SUP General / Tidal Bore
« on: December 24, 2012, 08:33:20 AM »

From Outside mag:

“The tidal bore comes into Alaska’s Cook Inlet with every incoming tide, but you can’t always surf it. Sometimes it’s just a frothing foam pile, because the tide is too weak or the wind is blowing in the wrong direction or the inlet is frozen. When the elements align, like they did at Turnagain Arm last September, there’s no other wave like it. That day, three of my buddies surfed the bore’s leading edge for almost five miles while I flew a motorized paraglider 500 feet overhead and snapped photos. Between the sun and the surf, it was the best I’d ever seen the bore—even if I was working.”

Try again now.  You may have had a file get corrupted in upload that stuffed things up.

Have you tried splitting them into two posts?

Damned kids!  What is wild about this thing is that it reads like a 360 but it is actually and upwind 180 followed by a downwind 180 (all in a single aerial).  I am calling it a zero.

.... I don't like how this topic has divided the Aloha spirit here at the stand up zone...

You haven't even begun to budge on concealed carry, despite all of the evidence  ;)

No, but I have to admit, I want a tank a little, myself.

Such humility is rare, it seems.

Did you just compliment your own humility?

I am starting to think I may not be able to sway you guys on this one :)

3894
Cannons existed in the framer's time, were not permitted for private ownership then.

To take an originalist stance with the above understanding and then propose constitutional protection for assault weapons...

3895
No one says that gun free zones are unconstitutional, only sometimes unwise.

Heavy weapons, cannons, etc, are not the sorts of weapons kept in ones' house and thus don't get 2nd amendment protections. Assault rifles are and thus should be protected by the 2nd, but unfortunately the Supremes disagree.

Are you rewriting the 2nd ammendment?

The notion that they were short sighted and could not conceive of actual conditions in the distant future is self aggrandizing.

I said the opposite.  The Constitution had amazing foresight in that it allowed itself mechanism to be ammended.  The second ammendment was just that - an ammendment not in the original doc - and in my mind a good one.  Had the constitution been inflexible or short sighted there would be no second ammendment for us to discuss.  You are reading in rights that are not there.

You are upset with the legislature for passing laws that put certain restrictions on arms but that is not in conflict with the Constitution and, in honesty, you agree with many of them.  Going to the extreme, do you want nuclear arms?  Do you want guns in planes?

Even back then, there was an apparent need to create a positive spin. Could Dr. Gatling have been the original spin-doctor?

I am not sure about first.  In any event, it caught on.

The atomic bomb made the prospect of future war unendurable. It has led us up those last few steps to the mountain pass; and beyond there is a different country.

That the said Constitution shall never be construed to authorize Congress to infringe the just liberty of the press or the rights of conscience; or to prevent the people of the United states who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms... -- Samuel Adams, in "Phila. Independent Gazetteer", August 20, 1789

I am all for peaceable citizens keeping there own arms (won't even joke about seperating out the non-peaceable ones).  No right is an unlimited right including the two mentioned above.  It has been mentioned here a number of times but the founders recognized that they could not possibly have the foresight to know the details of what would come centuries later or what that might require in terms of regulatory law or even change and they left mechanism to do just that.  The constitution predates early auto weapons by 80+ years.

An off point quote aboute that:

It occurred to me that if I could invent a machine - a gun - which could by its rapidity of fire, enable one man to do as much battle duty as a hundred, that it would, to a large extent supersede the necessity of large armies, and consequently, exposure to battle and disease [would] be greatly diminished.

— Dr. Richard Gatling

Assault weapon and handgun bans have been mentioned numerous times.

Assault weapons, yes but I may have missed the calls here for a handgun ban.  A large majority of Americans favor an assault weapons ban, only a small minority favor all arms being banned.

Is this actually a multiplier?
