SUP General / Competition Rules
« on: August 04, 2008, 08:28:52 AM »
Evan, at Stand Up Paddle Surf posted this really interesting group of rules on their site: http://www.standuppaddlesurf.net/2008/08/03/international-surfing-assoc-sup-rules-7-10-08/

This seems to be a big departure:

Traditional long board surfing compared to progressive SUP surfing techniques: Because the paddle allows large SUP boards to be turned with high rates of speed and power, stand-up paddle surfing is deemed to be, at the competition level, a performance-centered branch of surfing, much like conventional shortboarding. Footwork, nose riding and style points will be scored, but this will be done in their relationship to the criteria of degree of difficulty and critical nature of wave positioning.

The whole rule set is very interesting, so if you have the time, read them all.  Race format and rules are also there.

Hi guys,

Here is a request to those of you that maintain Stand Up websites.  Please stoke us out with a link.

Feel free to link or embed the graphic below or use a text link if it works better for your format.

We have taken efforts to make sure that outbound links are provided to manufacturers, forecasters, bloggers, stores, mags, etc (really to anyone who is supporting the sport and maintains a publicly accessible site).  This works best if the sites that we share traffic with do the same.

Thanks for your support  :)

SUP General / Blogs
« on: July 31, 2008, 08:26:25 AM »
Hi all,

If you have a site that's core content is Stand Up Paddling, and that has a frequently updated RSS page, let us know.  Our blogs page http://www.standupzone.com/rss.htm will pick up the feed and display your most recent posts.

CSX355, I was unaware of your blog, but added it after your recent post (thanks for the link BTW)

PonoBill, I changed your link to Ke Nalu.  Let me know if it is pointed where you would like.  The new site looks great!

Best,
Randy

SUP General / SUP Glossary
« on: July 23, 2008, 04:50:29 PM »
PlankSpanker (via Stoneaxe) just mentioned SUPmarine as a potential entry in the SUP glossary.  Well, Im pretty sure no such glossary exists yet but I'm thinking we should get started on that.  If it gets good, we can give it a static home here.

So, here is the original, and my addition.  Have at it  ;D

SUPmarine - Standup board that will not quite float its rider
Oaron - Popular surfing forum term for us stand up padllers

Downwind and Racing / Racing Classes
« on: July 21, 2008, 01:42:23 PM »
Well, now we have this new area, why not put it to some use.

One of the main topics of conversation at these last two events was the classes, sizes, age groups, etc.  I should note that there was a overwhelmingly positive feel to these events, and the comments were in no way minimizing that.  There were, however a bunch of different ideas on how things should be set up going forward, and what seemed like a consensus, that no matter what is decided, let's get it set so that everyone can prepare.

What makes sense to you?

SUP General / New category - Downwind, Racing and Touring
« on: July 21, 2008, 08:55:27 AM »
Hi All,

Big Island Mike's suggestion of a new category was a source of many positive PM's and emails for me.  It seems that this is a feature that has a lot of support, so lets go for it.  I have moved some of the recent topics to the new category, so...off we go.

Downwind and Racing / Oahu Delivers - Hennessey Race
« on: July 20, 2008, 08:46:45 AM »
Laamaomao, the Wind God (yeah, I looked it up), was smiling on us again yesterday.  Beautiful side shore breezes came up for the run from Turtle Bay to Waimea.

The event was first class.  We are going home with more giveaway swag than we had in our entire closet before we left and the raffle prizes were outrageous including a Bark paddleboard, 3 big wave guns, wood surfboards, classic replicas, tons of C4 stand up stuff, etc.

Oh, and Kamapua'a, the Hog God, was with us as well.  The feast was unreal.

Chan (still sleeping) took home $100 for her third place finish in her category.  Slater and Tanner also prized (2nd and 3rd) in under 17 and under.  That's 3 out of 4 for our crew.  You can tell who the weak link is.  In current TV, I would be voted off just about now.  Here are some results.  Somehow I got listed as a prone paddler, 17 and under ;D, but I ended up with 1:22:34:

1  97 GUY PERE 1  Stand Up Unlimited Male 14' and or No Rudder 1:08:30
2  189 BRENDAN SHEA 1  Stand Up Stock Male Less Than 12' No Rudder 1:10:02

Events / Oahu Hennessey Race is on - Bowls postponed
« on: July 16, 2008, 07:39:55 AM »
Hey Hawaii guys,

Is anyone planning on doing the Hennessey this weekend? http://hennesseyspaddleboarding.com/2008/

The Steinlager at Bowls was postponed until August due to a scheduling deal, so for those who had those plans, this might be a fun fill in.

After Tanner and Slater Trout took the #1 and #2 slots in the Youth category in the Maliko race, they decided to go to this one...and it wasn't too hard to convince Chan and I to get in as well - Want to go race in Oahu this weekend? - Yup.

Anyhow, if the idea of cruising past the most notorious 8 miles of beaches anywhere in the world appeals to you, sign'er up.

Downwind and Racing / Maui Delivers - Naish Race
« on: July 14, 2008, 07:50:10 AM »
It is unlikely I would be able to relate how exciting and fun the Mailiko to Kahului race was yesterday.

200 plus paddlers going for broke in what I consider to be one of the most beautiful stretches of ocean anywhere, in good sized seas, driven by a steady 25 MPH wind that no one forecast to happen.

Tons of long glides and the wind even helped us into the harbor.  To much new gear to really take in.  Being on the water with the best of the best was very cool.

Note:  Dave Kalama and Jamie Mitchell (Dave won standup at 1:06 Holy Shite and Jamie won Prone as always) were driving two nights before the event, and their rack, holding both of their race boards, tore off of the vehicle, buckling both of the boards.  That whole night was spent rebuilding them.

SUP General / Great action shot - Posted by Great Dane
« on: July 12, 2008, 07:03:08 PM »
Greatdane posted this a while back in the Gallery, and I am not sure if it ever got any love.  Anyways, I thought the shot was among the coolest action shots of standup I had seen and thought I would give it a bump.  I would love to see a higher res version if available.

SUP General / Glenn James and some Maliko info
« on: July 09, 2008, 10:26:15 AM »
I just wanted to point to a forecaster and site that has been a mainstay on Maui since forever.  I quote his forecasts here all the time, but for those who don't check his site, and are interested in Maui's...and all of Hawaii's weather, here is the link http://www.hawaiiweathertoday.com/

I sent Glenn a note this morning that read

...there is a group of paddlers biting their nails right now thinking that we might see very light trades on Sunday at 2:00 for the Maliko to Kahului downwind race. If you could, let us know if/when you might have any insights particular to that area for that date.

From Glenn

Hi Randy, good to hear from you. As for that time and date and place...I'd expect, although its still quite a ways out into the future, trade winds running 10-20 mph.

Aloha, Glenn

So....all we need to do now is pray for the higher end of that spectrum  :)
