Skills Matter. Robert downwinded with our usual group yeterday, and he was damn fast right off the bat (second time). All those days matter. The sport...maybe not so much. Here he is going for a little beauty dip at Teahupoo. Good thing its not shallow:)

Some of the paddle creations from Sol Morey. I have tried the little Lollipop one (tiny blade, flat back), and it made me rethink everything. Great to see the R & D getting done.

Mike sent this pic of an interesting looking craft over.
"I saw this at the Lillio race last weekend. From Ian Foo, original work if I am not mistaken. For stand up with a sitting passenger and foot steering."

Werner Expands Stand Up Paddle Offerings
Werner Paddles has announced the introduction of two new Stand Up Paddles: The Werner Advantage and the Werner Carve. Both paddles will be available to ship beginning September 01, 2008.
As participation explodes in the Stand Up Paddle category, Werner is responding with new paddle designs that focus on the two aspects of the sport, touring and surfing.
The Advantage is a Premium fiberglass laminate construction blade with a modified tear drop shape designed to optimize straight ahead efficiency for touring. The Carve consists of the same construction as the Advantage but the shape is smaller, longer and more slender, specifically designed for dynamic surfing and turning.
Both the Advantage and the Carve come with a fiberglass oval indexed shaft and ABS Palm-grip. Werner offers three shaft configurations. The 1-piece is the lightest weight option and is least expensive ($219). The 2–piece is perfect for paddlers who travel with their paddle ($234). The Adjustable length telescopes with four settings, each 1.5 inches apart; perfect for those individuals who move between touring and surfing ($259).
“Stand Up Paddling is a real growth opportunity for surf and paddle sports dealers. We are excited to expand our Stand Up Paddle offerings to respond to the specific demands of the market,” says Jim Miller, Werner’s Marketing Manger.

Standing waves and downriver runs. Looks way fun. We are in Limerick at the moment, and there have been guys kayaking a little standing wave in the River Shannon, right out in front of the city. Looks perfect fo this kind of Stand Up Paddling.
Pretty cool: walking through the city, I saw a 4x8 Roxy poster in the window of stand up paddling in a store window. Did a double take.

Surfpainter's post about 40 knot downwinders made me want to open a thread about that.
We had a really fun run recently, where the wind kicked up into the 40 MPH + range (gusts) between Camp One and the Harbor. This was my first downwinder where it was blowing the tops off of the swell and "ghosting" around us. The swell itself was running long and straight down the coast at shoulder to head high. Things get different at those wind speeds for sure. So fun being able to pick up swell just by sailing your paddle overhead, and moderating your position in the trough by how much of your back you are showing to the wind. Full on body sailing. I had a school of flying fish erupt all around me and get way more than they bargained for when they hit the blast. Surprised me when they launched, and then a few hit my paddle blade, calfs and and splashed down on board. One stayed with me for a few seconds, flopping in my deck recession, before splashing off. Had to remind myself to really grip the paddle during passes, as it wanted to fly off.
This has me very stoked to get out during some of those winter days when a solid NE swell is running and we get big winds like this. Those are typically junk days over here, but damn it sounds like fun for an out of control downwinder.
Yeeeeeooooowwwwww!
