The Shape Shack / Input on design of 11'-6" SUP
« on: September 06, 2007, 05:41:09 AM »
I am planning to build a hollow wood SUP, using the Grain Surfboards building method.  I live and surf in Santa Cruz, CA and would use the board primarily for surfing small point break waves, and for shorter fitness runs or break to break surf tours.  Most common wave size would be 1-4 feet, generally with good shape and quality. I'm an SUP novice, but longtime surfer, 5'7" 173, decent but not great fitness. I most frequently surf a 9'-0" performance oriented longboard, but also ride a 10'-0" nose rider and ocaisionally break out the 7'-8" hybrid for bigger days.

Another builder has generously shared his design, and I would love to hear comments from the experienced builders/riders on the suitability of this board for my purposes.  Specs of the board are here:

Gear Talk / Surftech Laird
« on: July 17, 2007, 09:51:42 PM »
I'm a long time surfer living in Santa Cruz, CA and have an opportunity to buy a nearly new SurfTech Laird for $1200.  I have not tried SUP paddling or SUP surfing yet, but I'm a pretty good athlete, a decent longboard surfer and in decent shape (5-8, 175) for a 41 year old with 2 kids a mortgage and a commute.  My small wave board is a 10-0 nose rider, and my other board is a 9-0, more of a performance shape. A few times each winter I get out on my 7-8 hybrid. I'm looking for an SUP to ride on smaller days, or when the tide or wind is shutting things down a bit.  I'd also like to use it for fitness training on flat days and general touring around from time to time.

-Will I get bored with this board?  The owner is selling it because he said it doesn't surf particularly well.

-Is that a fair price for a dingless Laird with a bit of scratched paint? What's the used market for these boards like?  I noticed I can order a custom Infinity for just a few bucks more.  $1200 for just the board, no leash, paddle or deck mat.

Thanks,
Andy

SUP General / Intro

I'm a long time surfer, sea kayaker and all around waterman, and have recently become interested in SUP, so I was stoked to find this forum.  I've been reading all I can about the sport, and I can't stop thinking about it, perhaps due to the extended flat spell we've been having in Santa Cruz this summer.  I look forward to learning more, and getting out on a SUP board soon.
