Sessions / L41 ST Demo session

Hi all,
I’ve been interested for some time in the L41 sups and several zoners seem to rave about them.  NorthJerzsurfer kindly loaned me his L41 ST for a couple days, this morning was the my first demo I figured I’d dust off the Soloshot and see if I could have success with that often flaky device. (I watched a you tube video to refresh my memory on calibrating the soloshot and it worked like a charm).  I was messaging with Dusk Patrol and OspreySup about L41’s so I thought I’d write a review of my experience.  I wasn’t sure if this should go in the Gear or Session section so sorry in advance.

Me: 57 yrs old, 5’9”, 200lbs or so.  Location: Long Branch, NJ. Sup: L41 ST 8’ x 30.5” 129L
Conditions: High tide breaking close to the beach very inconsistent, 2-3 ft as per Surf Captain.

Right away what I did not like was the SUP handle, it’s the kind you can only fit your fingertips, this is especially not good if you surf cold winters.  This is the shortest and lowest volume sup I’ve surfed and while I didn’t feel completely stable I was fine when paddling for waves.  The board paddles well and catches waves easily (I think better than my JL boards), I was really surprised.  Other L41 owners mentioned the speed on a wave; I will say I felt it was too fast, I did not feel in control on steeper waves. I’m guessing one may adjust to this with regular use.  At about 1:43 in the video I try to slow down by dragging my paddle.  About 3:29 of the video I kicked out but would have like to do a rebound off the lip but again the speed was too fast for me.  On the flatter mushier sections it was easier to redirect and weave the board which felt good.  No big deal but I did notice a hum/whistle coming from the fins.  Now I’ll admit I tend to ride further up on the board and have that staggered stance maybe this lends to less control on a sup with speed?  Not sure.

Overall, a fun sup.  I’d probably go a ½’ to an inch wider but the length on this board seems fine.  It would not be my primary board, I think it’s good for mushy days and I already have the Superfrank for those conditions.  Bigger steeper days I think I’d be more comfortable on my Destroyer, I feel going slower allows more maneuvers under control.  Again tho this is one session in not so great conditions.  One thing is for sure it’s great when you can demo a board, thanks again NJS!

I don’t get how the wind farm will deter tourists or is bad for the environment?  From what I heard the turbines will look like tiny specks on the horizon. And how is clean energy bad for the environment?  Disturbing migratory birds?
I've been following this issue for months now and am against offshore wind farms. You will have to do the research and decide for yourself. There are many factors which influenced my decision. Harming marine like including fish, whales, dolphin, and birds are a big concern. Our governor is not concerned with any of this it seems. There are a myriad of other issues also. There's a facebook group I follow that is opposed. If you're on fb check it out or get someone you know who is on there to show you. In the meantime here are some links to keep you busy and up to speed.

Not a “big fan” of wind turbines😁. My heart sank when I first saw them outlining the West Maui mountain scape.
They are definitely an eyesore and from what I've read so far they have a pretty large environmental footprint from production to installation, to remediation.
Hi Marc,

Thanks for sharing that informative information.  I know I was concerned years ago when they were trying to drill for natural gas off the coast of NJ.  There was big opposition by Surfrider foundation, COA, etc.  Unfortunately, what you shared shows what appears to be better options may not be so.

Hmm, sorry Marc I don’t want to get off the topic.  But I don’t get how the wind farm will deter tourists or is bad for the environment?  From what I heard the turbines will look like tiny specks on the horizon. And how is clean energy bad for the environment?  Disturbing migratory birds? That was a concern I heard about.

Never strayed. Yesterdays session from dawn patrol.
1:34 hour, 23 waves, 1.1 mile and 15 mph top speed.
I was happy.
Wow, that’s serious accuracy right there!  I just know I get a bunch of waves, tho I do wear a watch so I’m not late for work.  ;D

Yes. I still enjoy it and will continue as long as I am able.  It’s funny I started prone surfing again after around 8 years or so layoff and while it’s a lot of fun and challenging, I have realized while I like sup surfing so much.  I can get into position much quicker, I can move away from a crowd, surf all types of conditions and tides and I get a ton more waves.

While I am intrigued by foiling at this point it’s probably something I won’t do.  Sup or prone foiling is not ideal where I live due to the short beach break type waves and I don’t really want to invest the time and money to see what I might be missing.

That’s an unbelievable story!  “Juvenile mistake” referring to the whale?

Looks fun!  How cold does the water get? I noticed everyone wearing full suits.

Awesome trip Ken-

I had a buddy that supped in LA that just moved to Eugene but sold his sups.  Knew there was a reason for him to keep them! Could have probably hooked you up!

Hope all is well!  PS- got 4 miles the last 2 days in a row in your NSP! Been loving working out on it.
Hey Mike,

Glad your using and enjoying the NSP, I actually miss it.  I’ve been mixing up sup surfing with prone which has been fun.  I can’t believe how much I felt like a beginner after not prone surfing for many years.  Be well!

And if your road to the coast takes you through Portland (and back) you could talk to Gorge Performance.  They've toned down the rental business too, but you could probably make some sort of arrangements with them. Good rental surf sups have been a casualty of the popularity decline... Actually it's weird, we're on the downward curve of sup surfing, but knee deep in inflatables.

Yes Im sure Bob from Gorge performance can hook u up with a decent surf sup if you pass through pdx.  We have a decent hard core group of sup surfers based out of the pdx "valley"   .  Hit us up on our facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/893218017915074 .  I have only one out my 3 surf sups thats functional without needing repairs but willing to help if Bob cant .   James
Hey James,  thanks but we’ll be flying into Eugene, my sister-in-law lives there so visiting her for a couple days before venturing to the coast.  I did request to join the FB group.  Thanks again.

Hi all,

Me and the wife will be in Oregon the 3rd week of July.  It’s a long shot but anyone in the central coast area have a spare SUP to rent/lend for a few days?

Momentum surf company no longer rents SUPs, I’m waiting to hear back from pura vida surf shop.

Thanks,

Ken

Most spots I surf tend to be more forgiving at medium to high tide where as low tide especially on bigger days dump much harder.  Maybe consider going out during favorable tides until your more comfortable.
Depending on how many waves come in a set, let a couple waves pass before taking your wave taking that first wave of the set means more on the head if you fall.
While I’m riding my wave sometimes I’ll look quickly out the back to see what’s coming and I’ll kick out to quickly paddle back to the lineup if I see more waves coming I’ll ride the wave as far as I can; from there I’ll decide whether the set has ended and paddle out or I’ll get out and walk to the paddle out zone if there is one.  Where I live there are jetties all along the beaches it’s physics that a current flows out to sea right along the jetty so that’s the spot to paddle out.  You do need to time this right on bigger days with current but on medium smaller days it’s no problem.
I don’t have the tail handle on my sup’s so the board is at the mercy of the waves while I’m going under.  When it’s smaller I’ll hold the board close or sometimes I’ll hold the flat strap(rail guard) of the leash, I don’t recommend this when it’s big.
Finally, on smaller to medium days I quickly get back on my board and I’ve learned to punch through the white water, as the wave approaches I paddle a couple strong strokes to gain momentum then I quickly go to a surf stance compress my body by crouching this pushes the nose down then when the wave hits I uncompressed a bit and shoot thru the wave, I quickly go to parallel stance and dig hard preparing for the next wave.
Happy SUP surfing.

Great video Rick!  Looked like no pesky sharks bothered you.  Looking forward to your how to on the SS, always good to have tips.  The birds looked cool making cameo appearances!
