I had a chance to ride some big slopey waves, maybe 8 foot, breaking on an outer bar then backing off. My 7'10" Takuma made digging into them easy. I think Beasho is right about using a bigger board for bigger waves. One wave stood up and barreled. You have to be carful with these things. It was a lot of fun but I will definitely be thinking twice before I go out in bigger surf again. This is the fourth time I have had this view of a foilboard in just over a year of foiling.

What about Capitola jetty. The cam makes it look good on days that are too big most places. Is it filled with kelp?

I emailed Signature, they say soon they will be available in U.S., but not yet. Their foils are all made in South Afrika now.

I went from 8-0 to 6-0. No regrets so far.
I was hoping you would chime in. Thanks. Mr. Kalama's paint jobs are my favorite ever. I am also wondering if Sharksupper would get the 5'11 JL instead of his 6'4" if he had to replace it. He stands on the 6'4" like it is a dock, and paddles back out faster that I can on a 7'10".

I just went 5’2” and love it!! It’s also carbon and light so once in the wave it’s like it’s not there!
The video of you on the 5'2" is very impressive. It makes me feel like a wimp for having second thoughts about 5'11''. Big difference between 511 and 64 with a SUP. I was shocked by how much higher performance my 511 was compared to my 64. This pretty much cements my choice, although I can't be considered "real good". Hopefully I can learn to stand on it without too much trouble.

If you have a board under 6'6", how happy are you with your decision? Would you change the size if you could?
I am trying to decide between 6'4'' and 5'11" for a new board. Five days after getting my 6'10" L-41 I already wanted something smaller, so I am thinking the 5' 11" this time.

I need to start an open swap for surf CAD files somewhere on the web. Why not just use Thingiverse?

I'll try some flat water practice to see if I can improve my balance and paddle power with my feet closer together. Thanks.

the back foot closer than normal to the front foot.
How much closer? I tried this yesterday and it felt more effective once but I lost my balance and missed the wave many times. I would love to be able to pump to catch a wave and also to pump back out, but both skills are eluding me. My downwind attempts, one in 28 mph winds, have not resulted in even one lift off.

Pour foam comes in different weights. But it does seem like it would be easier to just add weight to this one.
If it sits on its side like some kitefoil boards do that would be very frustrating.

Small board. Big wave. Sweet.

why not just install the mounts properly? seems to me that adding an extra layer or two of glass or carbon is easier than having your foil rip off and sink. im amazed at how little reinforcing gets used on most boards, an extra square foot of cloth doesnt weigh that much!
You are right, and that is exactly what I am doing on my latest repair. The only way to figure out how light we can go is trial and error.

I used a dynema line from the leash plug around the tail to the top of my plate mount masts. I couldn't tell the difference and it gave me peace of mind.

From memory, it’s roughly 96L @5.9” thick.
I like how he is going super thick with his designs. Volume has always been very good to me. Weight not so much. I would rather have to do repairs if it gets me a lighter board.

How much volume is in the 5'6"? If you can stand on it you can learn on it.
