Foil SUP / Re: Kenalu foil sale!
« on: January 25, 2019, 08:46:19 AM »
Anybody on this forum ever ride a KeNalu wing.  Interested in knowing what you think.  I'm not asking cause I want to buy one but the new wing I'm making has a very similar dihedral/anhedral profile.

Foil SUP / Anyone with experience with bi-concave wings?
« on: January 22, 2019, 05:21:28 AM »
You know Da Kine.  There is a slight amount of double barrel concave on either side of the fuselage.  At the present time I cant seem to recall which companies produce such wings but Slingshot and Signature wings come to mind.  I up here in Maine and do not get to see any production wings in person.  The only production wing I have met in person is the Naish Thrust.   If any body has any experience riding this wing design and can compare it to non-bi-concave wings I would love to hear all about it.    Thank in advance!

  Thanks everyone!
Funny!  This is the wing I have been looking at recently.  Their Stealth model actually has a little bit of Gull Wing (bottom concaves on either side of the mast.).  My new form incorporates a bit of Gull Wing which I hope provides greater lift and stability to the ride.  Then again I may not like it and will flush another $50 (and much time) down the crapper. Then again, $50 is a small amount to pay for the knowledge gained.  I di like the idea of having a wing with a higher aspect ratio and thinner cord to thickness ratio.   Just trying to decrease drag while maintaining lift.  Hope this will help in flatwater starts and downwind forays.  These Signature Albatross wings seem to be very thin from top to bottom as compared to GoFoils.  Then again, it appears GoFoils are thicker than most.  The wing pictured above is the smaller surface area wing in the Albatross line.  Their larger wing looks much more like the planshapes we are accustomed to seeing.

Foil SUP / Changing cord to thickness ratios from wing root to wing tip
« on: January 21, 2019, 08:28:03 AM »
There has got to be someone out there who has information regarding this topic.   I am in the process of making a very large( 42" wide) downwind wing for my measly 155 lb body weight.   I also hope this wing will allow me to flatwater SUP start, eventually.  I have often wondered if decreasing the cord:thickeness ratio starting from wing root and decreasing towards wing tip would help with regards to increasing maneuverability of these XL wings.  Not sure if I want to go there.  For example, Wing root- NACA 4416 down to wing tip, NACA 4414.  Just a thought.  maybe it would lessen the outer wing torque against your feet?  Just wondereing.

Very nice!  Do the plywood pieces extend through to the deck?

Yep! That would be fully expected when Tuttle or otherwise does not anchor itself to both the top and bottom of board.  With all the forces involved, I think we need far more structural support in and around the Tuttle.  The Tuttle itself was never designed for what we are using it for.   If you can find me a manufacturer who makes just the actual carbon glass boxes(the piece that actually fits over the mast insert)  I would "improve" upon them and resell them as true Foiling Tuttle boxes.

Yes, I agree with the last statement.  The masts will break before the reinforced tuttle would fail.  What to do?  Build a better mast!  It never ends!

Foil SUP / Re: Does foil surfing ruin your balance
« on: December 20, 2018, 03:30:29 PM »
A definite Yes from me!  Its not that my balance gets worse but I think it is the rhythm and rate of board movement.  With the foil on, the movements side to side are slower and I find that I can not keep up with the much faster wobble of a wingless board.

Another one showing Version 1 to the right.  Far more difficult to make versus my newer method.  It was carved plywood, very heavy and inexact, but it flew!

Someone earlier asked to see the finished version.  I have not yet put the added carbon over the nose cone but it looks the same.

I was wondering about making the center with two ribs spaced just wide enough for the fuse insert. Then you could just cut or bend the carbon tow struts enough to insert it in between? Not sure if that’s easier or not but it seems like it might be.

Yes, Spacing 2 ribs or templates closer together would work fine and I do believe the lack of high strength filler would not be a problem and make the wing that much lighter.  I just feel better having a little more high strength filler around such a critical spot with regards to stress.   Easy enough  to test but getting the answer requires failure after a lot of hard work.   My wing weights do not seem bad and all my wings float very well.  Do not have a scale but will try to get wing weights measured.

That's quite a jig. There is a way without any cardiac surgery equipment: Make a drilling jig that can be precisely installed each time to drill the first hole. That includes the hole for the fuselage. That's a common cabinetry and metalwork problem. It seems like every project I do there comes a point where progress has to stop while I make a jig to drill repeated holes where the hole needs to align to a blind hole.

Yes I'm sure there are a dozen ways to solve this problem.  Liking my Jig due to the ability of being quickly adjustable to any dimension.

Almost forgot the important part.  Thank you PonoBill for telling me to first download pics to Facebook.  That did it!

PS - Please do not show these pics to my wife.  This is what I do when the shop is too cold and she is not home.
