I used BRM kites for four years before I gave up kiting for winging this year.  Greg is a thoughtful, meticulous designer and I have nothing but positive things to say about his products and the way he runs his business.  I've ordered the 3, 4, 5, and 6 sizes and will be happy to provide reviews when they get here (which right now is planned for early/mid-July).

You can try my Echo’s, and I’ll try your BRM’s. We can compare notes :)

I'm looking forward to the back-to-back Penguin Island trials -- especially of the Echo and W1 6-meters.  I bet they are both going to be big upgrades from our current light-wind wings.  Now all we have to do is wait ... and wait ... and wait for them to get here!

Glad to see him taking the lead on two wide, stiff handles.  The wings look good but that looks great.  I'd rather see them leave this modular and user position-able but this is a fine start.  Did he mention what he is doing internally to add rigidity to the handles?

In the (very long but very interesting) video linked in the first post above, Greg details how he put attachment points for Y-handles and a few other attachment points if people want to customize.  He's not supplying those handles, but it does look like there is some of the flexibility in positioning that you're looking for.

ObxDave- Which Axis front wing are you using. Do you guys ever swap out foils to test back to back?

Hi Cnski --  That's my Axis in the pic -- straight beginner setup: 1020 front, 500 rear, short fuse, 76 cm mast.  It's has been great for an average (at best) kite foiler to learn on.  But I haven't foiled with any other wing over 1200 cm^2

Craig stretzel? Did I remember the name right. Spelling?

Craig Stroetzel -- innovative windsurfing boardbuilder died of a fall while skatesailing in Annapolis in 1984.  There was almost no wind when he fell.  I remember this because it is one of the things that started me wearing helmets -- and I took a similar fall from a skateboard a few years ago right on the back of my head from hitting a rock.  Helmet got surface cracked, but my head was fine.

Hot Sails Maui Hotwing 3.0 – unique two-piece carbon boom that is kind of a cross between the Duotone boom and handles.   Photos at https://tinyurl.com/y7d4lj2r   Video (not me)  @ https://www.seatexboards.com/hotwheels-no-hotwings/   . The wing feels pretty similar to my F1 Swings, but it turns out I prefer handles to booms.  Used twice on the water and once with a skateboard, perfect shape. Asking $429 shipped in the USA (paid $639 shipped new).  akeelerbiz@gmail.com

I was out with OBXDave while this video was being made.  Wind was averaging mid-high teens but VERY up and down. This was a day that definitely showed the value of talent and experience --  we were on identical boards, very similarly sized foils, and OBXDave was on a 4 meter Duotone and I was on a 4.2 Swing.  He was going the graceful transitions on the video, and I (about six sessions into learning) spent 80% of the session trying to pump onto the foil and falling in a lot.

The video is really cool, but it was a little un-nerving to be out in the sound with the drone buzzing loudly around.  But the result is way cool!

Agree with all of the above about Kainani's videos --- just a note that she is Greg's niece and not his daughter.  Her father Scott is also a superb foiler. I've loved using Greg's kites for four years and am really looking forward to his upcoming wing offerings.

Classifieds / SUPSports 8'11" carbon Hammer with windsurfing track

Great All-around Standup paddle board with windsurf abliity – 8’11” 148 liter US-made carbon SUPSports Hammer.  Works paddling into waves up to shoulder-high, paddles well in flat water, and has a US box for attaching a windsurf sail that is perfectly placed (and appropriate carbon reinforcement to protect against boom/mast dings) .  Board is in excellent shape.  Wardog has closed down SUPSPorts, but you can see (an 8’5”, not an 8’11” like mine) on the water at

Looking good, Dave!!  I'm jumping in to wingies in the spring -- I'll def be trying to get you to teach me all your hard-won early-adopter lessons.

Are you getting enough depth to foil at Canadian Hole even in NE winds?

Andy

Thanks to everybody -- great information on gill nets that I had no idea about, and I'll try my best to snag a Ke Nalu paddle from Big Winds (that's what I've been using since 2011).  I'll be they guy in the dorky Tilley hat -- I'll wave as you all glide past me.

Hi Zoners -

I'll be in Hood River next week and am planning to rent from Big Winds and use their shuttle for a couple of downwinders. A couple of questions I can't find easy answers to:

1. Is a neoprene shirt enough warmth for late July for most people, or should I pack a shortie?
2. Will I need to bring shoes to enter and get out of the river, or do bare feet work OK for most of you?

Of course, I'm also grateful for any general or specific advice.  I've done 25-30 downwinders on a 14-foot fixed-fin board above 20 knots, but in smaller conditions than what I think I'll see there.  The Big Winds board selection looks good, and I'm assuming that their paddles are also OK.

Thanks for any help.

The Shape Shack / what glue/epoxy to attach a handle?
« on: August 29, 2015, 08:35:16 AM »
I have an older StarBoard with a non-recessed handle that is hard for my wife (and me) to carry.  I made a strap using tubular webbing and surfco-type stick-on attachments  (like these  http://www.socialskateboarding.com/p/surfco-ez-plug-kit-clear?gclid=Cj0KEQjwsIWvBRCnzevvor2g4L8BEiQAAN234Yzeug5UGqipNeiRsvglcWtUr5HE5aUFX1qqUAa94TUaAkVH8P8HAQ  ).  The stick-on adhesive was not strong enough for carrying a close-to-40 lb. board, but since it failed I have tried gorilla glue, JB weld, and marine epoxy,  and one of the attachment fails after 10-15 uses.  Can somebody please tell me a good way to attach these so that they will stay?

Thanks!

Andy
