Foil SUP / The future of board design?
« on: June 14, 2019, 08:53:09 AM »
After seeing the one minute pump challenges with the new wing designs coming out, I'm wondering is anyone working on a sup that can easily pop up onto foil? I think the future will be the ability to get on foil before even having the wave or swell.

So it just keeps bolts in place? I switch my bolts out for Phillips head #3's in M8 size and then put a little Teflon tape around the T nut and it stays in place or I shove some wax on each side of the T nut in the groove. The#3 Phillips head makes it way easier to tighten and loosen over the torque 40 and Allen key style heads.

That's great info on the gong stuff. I'd love for my buddy to get a board from Dwight. His stuff is the best out there. I have a 6'4"X30" from him and waiting on a 6'11". He's super busy these days tho plus as a first board he's not going to need much performance. Hopefully AWSI this year will have a bunch of foils to demo and surf expo also. It'll be nice to get an on hands comparison of foils at the same time same conditions.

Thank you guys for all the info. Any one ride the Axis 102 and the gong or go foil maliko? I have the Axis and love it for 1 foot and under. Haven't had a chance at the go foils yet. Looks like prices will start to drop soon tho on all foils. Neil Pryde is making great gear at a fraction of the price and even cloud 9 is going direct sales. Amazing time to be in this sport with so many options on the horizon

He's on some big 12 foot log of a sup. He's a good surfer so I was more concerned with what type of liters he would need. I'm going to push him towards an Axis 102 or have him wait till the Neil Pryde XL is released. I just don't want him to get something not right for him. I told him he might need to just shave down the walls of a small skiff and use that.

I have a buddy trying to get into the sport. He's 250 lbs, any recommendations for a board for him? It's going to be ridden in Florida so choppy wind swell conditions. He can also get something made but liters come into question.  I'm thinking 8 foot is the longest he should go.

Hey supdad I've changed boards a lot and found that when I get a new board. Get used to how the board drops into the waves. Get your stance right and then adjust the foil forward or back to accommodate your stance. Different foils and sized wings will usually sit differently on the board. If you're lifting easily but hard to push down the nose and tend rise up out of the wave, then move the foil back a little. If it's hard to get on foil without taking a big step back, then move the foil forward. On the smaller boards, you really shouldn't have to move around much like you would on a long board or big sup. Keep in mind a lot of guys ride straps so they adjust the foil position since their stance is always the same.

Your set up sounds right but maybe the foil is too far forward. Some boards like it more forward and others further back. If it's lifting you too much when you come up and if hard to push down to pump then the foil is too far forward. Foil placement to me is the biggest part of catching waves in the beginning.

I think after a few months a bunch will be available second hand. Plus being that I see people on Instagram making these out of old kites, soon enough we'll all be able to get our hands on them. Looks like something that would be easy to copy and not need the strength and testing it takes to make a kite.

Drill a hole in some wine corks and slide them onto leash.

What's the link to that? Couldn't find it on the site.
Thank you

I started with a coil leash the calf and it was killing my leg Esso I went with the blue planet waist leash on a reel. It's awesome and I should of done it sooner. It has a shock cord and static cord so a lot of the time if I fall, I can grab the static cord and keep the board from foiling away in a wave and it's right there so I can swim though a wave following the one I fell from. The reel leash works well and keeps any leash drag from happening. https://www.blueplanetsurf.com/retractable-foil-waist-leash-with-shock-cord.html

Anyone get to try this wing yet? Wondering how it compares with the albatross from signiture foils.
